Just that really. Sociopathic Patel refusing visas. In a time where we need leadership & empathy & intelligence there's a ducking idiot at the helm & Rees~Mogg making a fortune with insider trading.
Who the hell will admit to being so sociopathically selffish & grabby to still vote Tory?

@ElsieMc Check out the blue line to see what has happened to "mass immigration" under the Tories since the Brexit bongs...

Noticeable that there's a big jump in emigration post 2016.
My lovely NHS dentist was one of them.

verdantverdure · 20/10/2023 21:41

Dentists, medics, vets, anyone with skills the world wants have been leaving in significant numbers the last few years.

The young will go in droves if we don't get this country back to what it was before Brexit and before 13 years of Tory mismanagement.

Sadly, that's what I hope my children do.

Still if Labour get in?

Which people think is a given

Couldn’t agree more. They should’ve scrapped the pensions triple lock long ago. Then reduced UC right down so work does pay. Oh wait.

So what would all the people on low wages, working FT live on?

Do you think employers would magic up the difference? ..... landlords reduce rents?

Scrapping TL would just mean poorer pensions claim MORE benefits or dying of the cold.... what would you prefer?

We could of course make pensioners pay NI if they pay tax, perhaps on a different scale to people who work but that might make them less likely to vote Tory???

Income support has been available for low paid workers since the late 1940s but it has only been a common way of topping up wages more recently and esp since Austerity and public sector wage cuts ........ made worse by Sunak deciding to freeze tax thresholds for the next 6 years and increase student loan repayments = more reliance on benefits......

Good news is he is planning on increasing the higher rate tax threshold pre GE.... which will do SFA for the millions who rely on UC to live or Tory chances at the next GE.

You tell me. People are asking why they didn’t sort it. Your post kind of proves the point. Since tax credits we have become a state of dependents. No easy fix. Scrapping the lot wouldn’t go down so well no?

Kendodd · 20/10/2023 21:45

Sadly, that's what I hope my children do.

Since my DD left the NHS in the spring for Australia, several of her Uni cohort and people she worked with, have upped sticks and joined her to work abroad.

Its terribly sad and made worse by changes in student loan repayments which has meant the recent wage rises have been eaten up these repayments..... its almost as if the Tories want AHPs to leave the NHS or the UK.......

Well, they're teenagers now, but the damage the Tories have done is so deep and so bad I don't think Labour can improve things much.

Princessandthepea0 · 21/10/2023 08:19

The raising of the higher tax rate threshold would be a good idea. The chancellor’s own reports have told him it reduces tax take. Ordinary workers are being pulled into the tax band which was once for the wealthy. A bit like UC claimants stick to their 16 hours. People around thresholds change behaviour. Pensions, dropping a day. The tax jump and losing things such as CHB, higher tax etc - means people avoid it. It’s these people funding everyone on UC. You need them to work more - not less.

Alexandra2001 · 21/10/2023 08:19

@Princessandthepea0 I ve given you 3 fixes and/or reasons, public sector pay freezes, TH freezes and student loan payments.... all keep take home pay low... benefits high.

the Tories have made it far worse by a policy of keeping wages low, a deliberately long term policy, which we are all paying for, be it you paying more tax or less money in local economies and the high street failing.

You were the one calling for all this support to end... not me.

R37sraY · 21/10/2023 08:20

Mine will leave either way. State is too big under both parties. Opportunities are elsewhere.

Tories didn’t cut tax and regs post Brexit so the only benefit we have from it is not to be part of the coming collapse.

Not so, the changes to TH and increases in Corp tax has meant the Chancellor has an additional £21billion.... according to the IFS yesterday.

We need changes to the lower rate thresholds.

The level of the state dependency does feel problematic and onerous

It has been proven time and time again, that people are changing their behaviour and it’s reducing tax take. You can’t keep relying on the small minority on PAYE to pay for you all. The lowest tax payers in this country already have a high allowance and low taxes. Compared to other countries they are low taxed. In a nutshell, not enough people ar e pulling their weight and paying enough tax. Unfortunately, it’s the higher earners paying for everyone else.

@Crapsummer2023. And there you have it "people like me...." "Not from the UK" What on earth does that mean and how do you know this. Such discriminatory language. Look again at my second paragraph.

Zonder · 23/10/2023 07:39

Is reform Laurence Fox's party? I lose track of all these right wing re- parties.

Luckydip1 · 23/10/2023 07:51

This year the UK will pay £100 billion to pay the interest on our debt, its is a shocking figure second only to what we pay for the NHS.

Alexandra2001 · 23/10/2023 07:54

Princessandthepea0 · 21/10/2023 08:24

So how do you explain that Billionaires pay 0.5% tax on their wealth....... just think how much more we could collect if we lowered this draconian rate?

Unless the low paid are no longer low paid, then they simply cannot afford to pay more tax........ its also rather insulting (but not surprising) that you think a healthcare worker on £15ph, a delivery driver on £13ph, a carer on £11ph (all working 40 plus hours per week) are not "pulling their weight"

No of course you're not right wing, where on earth did i get that idea from ???

As for your whinging about high earners, someone on 250kpa, will take home 141k after Tax NI and 8% pension contributions...... 9x what someone on the NMW would take home.

Luckydip1 · 23/10/2023 09:39

So a higher earner on £250k pays £110k in tax, how much does the person on the minimum wage pay? £2k? How is that fair, the UK already taxes the rich.
