Is the UK in danger from Russia?

Keep receiving conflicting information. I am sick to my stomach and quite simply hate the unknown. So a simple question - is it likely that the UK will be in danger from Russia? And if so what does that look like? Cyber attacks, bombs being dropped?

OP posts:

Posted on the wrong thread but still vaguely on topic

@Mydogdave

Oh I got through Biden give Putrid putin the nod did you miss that part
Slugs leave slime, caterpillars crawl, butterflies fly and dogs lick their balls.

I think the above makes more sense than what you’re posting. Can you ask an adult (or a human) to communicate on your behalf?

Chocolattay · 25/02/2022 01:57

These weird accounts do actually have posting history if you check but I wouldn’t underestimate the complexity of bots.

Mind you, we have lived through all this in the 80s. When Russia (or USSR ) invaded Afghanistan, all that happened was that the US refused to go to the Moscow Olympics, and the others that didn't agree competed under the Olympic flag and didn't have their national anthems played. Hmm
That learned them! Grin

Furries · 25/02/2022 02:09

@Mydogdave

Furries, you do like to bully online don’t you quoting bullshit I do hope you have other bullies surrounding you to make you feel as special as you think you are you pick on me I bet your dog wouldn’t even entertain your sad sack bully balls your dog would turn its nose up at your bullying sack of nothing
Erm, my cat would likely happily smack you round the chops - he’s a miserable git with some people 😂

If you think I’ve been bullying you, please just hit the “report” button on my posts.

Otherwise, please use a bit of punctuation and coherent sentences to get your point across. Because, so far, your posts are not conveying anything meaningful.

Furries · 25/02/2022 02:13

Anyway - is anyone else awake and watched the live broadcast from Brussels? I think Macron snuck in a very small dig at the UK regarding refugees. Not sure that right now is the right time for Willy-waving, but the translation was a bit muddled/delayed.

MangyInseam · 25/02/2022 02:16

I think it's likely Europe could be drawn into this. It seems to me it will be bigger than Ukraine, Putin is interested in reestablishing a Russian empire. Cyber attacks are likely, Russia has been practicing them for some time, and when you consider the role Ukraine plays in computer parts, along with our dependence on Taiwan which is imminently in danger from China, things look very dangerous. Plus most western countries are very weakened at the moment both militarily, socially, and in other ways.

It could be an attempt by Putin to bluff but I am really not sure I'd depend on that.

@Mydogdave

Your posts towards me are are not nice and you are a bully. Erm to be honest I think your a bit of a tit carry on bully 😂 laugh at me bully
Ok, my final “interaction” with you. If you have something to say, then please post it (in a way that makes sense). People on here will engage.

If you’re still insisting that I’m a bully, then please do hit that “report” button which shows at the top of every post - the admins will then delete the relevant messages.

I won’t engage further as not using up further thread space on this. Again, please report me if needed. Or post something coherent so that other posters can engage with you and give their feedback on your observations.

I don't think anything will happen to the UK other than war in Ukraine and the knock on effects that has on cost of living, supply chain issues etc (not to be underestimated but not an immediate threat to life and liberty).

I have read about it but don't understand the rationale behind what Putin is doing so I've no idea what his next move would be. I think he'd need NATO to be a lot weaker than it currently is before he attacked a NATO member though. There are plenty of non NATO targets he'll go after first and we can do more hand wringing condemnations and implementation of economic sanctions that Putin and his cronies don't care about. I'd say a realistic prospect is that the Russian people get fed up of the war and sanctions (which will hurt them much more than they hurt the Russian elite) and stage a revolution. Hopefully that happens before we are dragged into a boots on the ground war.

Kinsters · 25/02/2022 02:34

meant to say the war and economic sanctions will hurt the Russian people much more than they hurt the Russian elite and those in the West*

intheblightgarden · 25/02/2022 02:43

From a historical perspective this could be the start of WW3, that's not hyperbole.

Chocolattay · 25/02/2022 02:47

Early reports coming in Ukraine is shooting down missiles over Kiev

Libertybear80 · 25/02/2022 03:00

I prefer to go on the judgement of those more knowledgeable

@Partyatnumber10

Ok, nobody knows for sure what will happen, nobody has a crystal ball but for what it's worth here's what I think:

The war between Russia and Ukraine will last a few weeks or moths, bloody and utterly horrible.

Leaders of other countries will tinker around the edges, giving sanctions, taking lots of refugees and saying how terrible it all is but the won't actually do anything significant because pretty much nobody wants WW3.

Eventually Russia will get Ukraine back, we'll see lots of rioting and unpleasant reports from there but gradually other news items will replace this and we'll lose interest.

Then all we can do is hope that pp was right and Putin is at the end of his time and is replaced by somebody saner.

So no, basically in the short to medium term I don't think the U.K. is any particular danger although the thought of a China/Russia alliance long term gives me the shivers.

This.
Kinsters · 25/02/2022 03:55

@Libertybear80

You don't like to read the news and then discuss it?
user1481840227 · 25/02/2022 03:57

People keep saying it's nukes but we've seen nukes before so I wonder if it's a cyber attack or something.

He didn't say that it will be something brand new that the world hasn't seen before, just that it will be worse than what was seen more, meaning more severe!!

Whatever it is I don't think it will happen. It's just sabre rattling from Putin so he can say "look, they listened to my threats and there are no NATO soldiers in Ukraine" but NATO had already agreed they would not send in troops before Putin made that comment. Putin seems mad but surely even he's not mad enough to respond to economic sanctions and harsh words with nukes.
user1481840227 · 25/02/2022 04:50

@Kinsters
No I don't think he was talking about economic sanctions or harsh words.

I assumed he meant if any country sent troops in etc. that they would then face consequences more extreme than they had faced before.

flopjustwantscoffee · 25/02/2022 05:00

But seriously, I think the situation is grim for Ukrainians (and others), people will die, but it won't end in nuclear war.

KatherineJaneway · 25/02/2022 05:37

If he is planning anything will be a cyber attack or an EMP.

User5rh · 25/02/2022 05:38

Why don't you

a. Check you have a passport to flee the country
b. Hope you or you children don't get conscripted
c. hope there isn't a nuclear bomb.
d. don't moan about rising energy prices.
e. don't go out and enjoy yourself
f. make sure you have prepped
g. search for a bomb shelter

Or better than that, read some proper news obviously avoiding long covid at the same time

Aposterhasnoname · 25/02/2022 05:48

What an utter arsehole of a human being you are. I bet you felt so big and clever typing that out didn't you?! DFOD.

Says the person coming on here telling frightened people we’ll be nuked.
