Is the UK in danger from Russia?

614 replies

Keep receiving conflicting information. I am sick to my stomach and quite simply hate the unknown. So a simple question - is it likely that the UK will be in danger from Russia? And if so what does that look like? Cyber attacks, bombs being dropped?

@TabithaHazel are you seriously comparing long covid to the situation in Ukraine? You sound unhinged.

Mollyandmemakes3 · 24/02/2022 23:21

Novichok. Russia's weapon of choice. Undetectable and once sprayed will remain for 50 years, killing anyone who touches it. They don't need missiles, they can kills us all right now. YABU

Curiousmouse · 24/02/2022 23:21

@Baystard

In fairness if he even had a plan to disrupt the internet that would be pretty significant, we're so reliant nowadays, not just to use Mumsnet but for all sorts of infrastructure.
Not just for Mumsnet 😄😄
AdobeWanKenobi · 24/02/2022 23:22

I do think covid is absolutely relevant to this thread, in the way that all those who rubbed their hands together with glee at the lockdowns and disruption now have something new to catastrophise.

Don't get me wrong, what's happening in the Ukraine is a fucking disgrace, but we really aren't getting nuked any time soon.

RedToothBrush · 24/02/2022 23:24

The UK has been at risk from Russia for a number of years.

The only difference now, is that we are suddenly taking that risk seriously.

The London Laudromat and the extend of Russian money invested has compromised us for years, despite there being a clear conflict of interests in terms of foreign policy.

StormzyinaTCup · 24/02/2022 23:24

If Putin goes nuclear that’s game over for him and everyone else on this planet, so rather pointless. I would put that particular threat down to grandiose willy waving/playing the big powerful man.

A cyber attack/war on Europe is possible (I believe they have some top notch hackers) on financial institutions/NHS air traffic control

I’m hoping that someone close to him in Government will take him down and do the whole world a favour.

KerryWeaver · 24/02/2022 23:24

I don't believe the UK is in danger of being invaded by Russia. However, Russia has been trying to destabilise the UK for years.

As Dominic Cummings admitted the “tories literally have their party financed by Putin's mates for decades". London is known as the "laundry" for the financial services provided to Russia.

Halloweenrainbow · 24/02/2022 23:27

Boris said "we'll do everything to keep our country safe", but after the last two years of crisis mismanagement, I have absolutely no confidence in their ability to do that. Surely the rest of the world can also see how disorganised and unprepared we can be with lack of planning, lack of appropriate equiptment, poor communication, strained resources all making us vulnerable and not in a position to survive any kind of war.

So the UK has already sent troops to eastern Europe in the last few days to help reinforce area around Ukraine, (not within it) I'm not especially confident Putin will stop at Ukraine. If he so much as blinks at a NATO country our troops will be involved. If that happens it's anyone's guess.

GallopingHighRoad · 24/02/2022 23:30

@Tealightsandd

OP asked about danger to the UK.

Covid and Long Covid is a major danger to the UK.

You haven't seen anything yet.

A few nights ago a 7 foot tall goat-man ran in front of my car. Turns out he was probably a kangaroo. And there are thousands more waiting to jump us.

True
FatFredsFriedEgg · 24/02/2022 23:32

@Cyberpunk2077 People keep saying it's nukes but we've seen nukes before

Oh yes, I remember seeing those mushroom clouds over Manchester and Liverpool. They were nothing. A cyber attack that shuts down power for a couple of days would be trivial compared to the nuclear attacks we've already had.

Arse.

WonderfulYou · 24/02/2022 23:32

@GallopingHighRoad is that true? And if so we’re you there poster who made a thread about it or has there been a second sighting? Blush

Yeahthat · 24/02/2022 23:32

@Tealightsandd

Generally most people who are concerned about danger are concerned about danger full stop. Regardless of what causes it.
@Tealightsandd

Lol why don't you start your own thread where you list every possible danger.

I'll start: A freak accident where a large icicle falls on my head.

You bloody sad, tube.

mm47 · 24/02/2022 23:33

“although the thought of a China/Russia alliance long term gives me the shivers.”

Seconded.

With everyone focusing on Russia/Ukraine, now would be the perfect time for China to invade Taiwan. And then the world will be living in seriously interesting times!

KerryWeaver · 24/02/2022 23:34

@Tealightsandd

If not Russia, there's Long Covid. Despite rumours to the contrary that threat has not gone away.
How self-obsessed can you be?
WonderfulYou · 24/02/2022 23:37

At this moment in time we are not going to war with Russia.

Realistically we’re still in danger of terrorist attacks, getting raped/killed by men, illnesses etc - all of which are more dangerous to us then Russia right now.

It’s hard not to worry but there’s honestly nothing any of us can do, so we should just continue living life and appreciate that we don’t live in a war zone or have a terminal illness as tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone.

Sunseasun · 24/02/2022 23:39

Nukes have been used before. Erm Hiroshima..

Why are you all acting like it’s a crazy idea.

Sunseasun · 24/02/2022 23:40

Also we are a bit stuck as if we do nothing we give ideas to others.

Sunseasun · 24/02/2022 23:40

Not advocating nukes obviously!

We have seen nukes though. Yes, we saw them when our own side dropped them on somebody else, but Putin didn’t specify we had to have actually experienced them did he? Wink

@TellMeMoreHellebore

read up on it....no conflicting information if you look at the facts

putin is a sick man, not done much with his presidency really....looks like he wants to make his mark, maybe he's sick/dying with nothing to lose

he's made himself crystal clear....try and stop him, there will be strong consequences....like the world has never seen before he said. now, what could that mean?

Why are some people so sure that he’s ill?
