Is the UK in danger from Russia?

Keep receiving conflicting information. I am sick to my stomach and quite simply hate the unknown. So a simple question - is it likely that the UK will be in danger from Russia? And if so what does that look like? Cyber attacks, bombs being dropped?

OP posts:

@DingleyDel

Russia have always been a danger. They are a law unto themselves. They murdered people and potentially poisoned hundreds on British soil not long ago. And that’s one of the minor misdemeanours. U.K. has been incredibly foolish but of course London wanted their filthy money.
London? Doubt Londoners - particularly the two thirds of all of England's homeless families - wanted any 'filthy' money. People don't tend to welcome being priced out (socially cleansed) away from families, communities, and support networks.

If by 'London' you mean the UK government, you'll find that the majority are not Londoners nor do they live in London, excepting temporary or part-time for work.

AnEpisodeOfEastenders · 24/02/2022 22:53

@Campervangirl

We're not in any danger, it's a little man flexing his muscles (ok, he's got the might of the Russian military behind him). It's one thing invading Ukraine but it's a completely different ball game taking on America and Britain. No-one is nuking anyone. Putin can make all the threats he wants (must admit the threat was quite scary) but no one is going into a nuclear war or World War 3 over Ukraine. NATO is not going to let Putin get away with causing ww3.
This is the only rational comment on here tonight.
Pedalpushers · 24/02/2022 22:54

@Tealightsandd I know right? I'm very concerned about the danger from sinkholes and yet NOONE HERE IS TALKING ABOUT THEM?

TabithaHazel · 24/02/2022 22:55

@Tealightsandd

Are you really trying to compare post viral symptoms with Russia invading a country and the terror that people in Ukraine are going through? That's in such poor taste it's actually stunned me

Seriously?

You express concern about people suffering terror. What, like the 160,000 people in the UK killed by Covid? And the many disabled Long Covid sufferers.

(Hope, btw that your concern for the people in Ukraine is extended to those suffering in Yemen, Ethiopia, Syria, and other conflict torn regions).

Stunning poor taste indeed to dismiss heart, lung, and brain damage, strokes, clotting, and early dementia, that is Long Covid.

I've seen you around on other threads and you normally seem like a rational person, but your posts on this thread are extremely odd. The OP specifically asks about the threat from Russia - unless you are about to do a massive drip feed with hot off the press evidence that covid wasn't manufactured in the labs of Wuhan, but by Putin himself?
AnotherSillawithanS · 24/02/2022 22:56

The banks will probably go to shit soon.

youhadmeatjello · 24/02/2022 22:58

@AnotherSillawithanS how do you mean?

BoredZelda · 24/02/2022 23:00

he's made himself crystal clear....try and stop him, there will be strong consequences....like the world has never seen before he said. now, what could that mean?

Like Trump did with North Korea?

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 24/02/2022 23:01

Oh stop it @Tealightsandd.

Op asked about danger from Russia.

You tried to turn it into a thread about dangers of covid.

Why are you only talking about covid and not the loss of life and injuries caused by cars? Or the dangers of swimming in the sea? Or not wearing a helmet while riding a bike? Don't the injuries and deaths caused by those things matter to you?

See how daft you sound now?

HeadPain · 24/02/2022 23:02

Yes and has been for a while. But don't know exactly what he will do. I don't think he'll do nukes, no way. And he won't be able to bomb us with planes or invade us. But the modern warfare stuff,.and disruption of our gas supply...

Xiomara22 · 24/02/2022 23:04

Should we be worried that Russia has control of Chernobyl . Is there not a reason behind that? What if the bombing destroys the shelter protecting people?

AChocolateOrangeaday · 24/02/2022 23:04

@Tealightsandd Haven't you got some shopping to wash?

Prescottdanni123 · 24/02/2022 23:04

All we are doing at the moment is imposing sanctions and plenty of other countries are doing that so it is unlikely that Russia would single us out. If he did, other Nato countries would intervene.

I can't see Russia invading. Nobody has successfully invaded the UK for nearly 1000 years.

Nelliephant1 · 24/02/2022 23:05

@Valhalla17

If Boris keeps making threats then it's highly likely we will be nuked.
Don't be completely ridiculous.
Sunbird24 · 24/02/2022 23:10

That would also affect huge numbers of people in Russia and Belarus, many more than Western Europe, so while it’s a scary thought it’s highly unlikely they’d do anything with it deliberately, and even the Russians will most likely be trying to avoid damaging the casing on it.
Normando91 · 24/02/2022 23:11

So I won’t pretend to be clued up on all of this except for the constant news coverage I’ve watched today (and quite frankly terrified myself with) but I highly doubt nukes will ever be fired. If Putin decided to push that button, I’m to believe several would be fired back at him. No one wins in a nuclear war.
I think cyber attacks are far more likely. We’ll be disarmed via attacks on our banking systems quite possibly.

I hope- as horrible as it is to say because witnessing what is happening in Ukraine is heartbreaking- but I hope that he doesn’t take control of Ukraine and then decide to flex his muscle elsewhere and decide to take on a member of NATO, because then we are obligated to get involved.

All that being said, he’s an egomaniac and I’ve also read somewhere that he has both cancer and Parkinson’s… it’s worrying that he could be of the mindset of, well I’ve nothing to lose anymore. So fuck knows what he’s genuinely capable of 🤷🏻‍♀️

HannibalHeyes · 24/02/2022 23:12

London is probably very low down on the list to be nuked because of the enormous amount of Russian money being laundered through it, not to mention the number of Putin's oligarchs basing themselves here because they've bought the Tory party. If you see them all move out - that's the time to leave.

Hmm nope. Only if we go to Ukraine and we won’t.

". I don't think he'll do nukes, no way. "

Replying to myself ... Unless he's gone completely fkin crazy, which I didn't think he was, but apparently he has threatened to nuke countries that get involved ?? I doubt it highly. Unless he has really lost his mind. And wants to end the world as we know it. He's not the only one with nukes. Just googled it. France is already telling Putin that France has nukes too. What a terrible fkin situation. Countries threatening nuclear war. Awful awful awful. Has Putin really gone mad/dying of cancer and it's making him behave like this. I mean, I don't think he's ever threatened a lot of the world or anyone? with nuclear weapons before, has he?

JeremyBeadlesTinyHand · 24/02/2022 23:14

I am concerned about the cost of living crisis and the impact sanctions will have on that. Many cannot afford to make ends meet as is.

Namechangeroo1234 · 24/02/2022 23:15

I don't think we're in danger of being bombed etc. I think a cyber attack is plausible.

But we are going to feel it financially, the sanctions will impact us too. A lot of our fertilizer comes through Ukraine, flour, corn. Fuel will go up more.

Libraryghost · 24/02/2022 23:15

You have to accept the unknown to a large extent I'm afraid. The first thing that will happen is the cost of living will go up. Rising gas and oil prices inevitably means higher commodity prices. As for what actions Russia will take, who knows? No point worrying about it really. Easier said then done I know but it's a fluid situation. It all depends on if it carries on escalating and if he breaches NATO lands. It's worth remembering we have been here many times. Read up on the Cuban missile crisis, many people though a nuclear war would kick off then. We are still here.

Libraryghost · 24/02/2022 23:17

@HannibalHeyes except many Russian properties in London are empty. The ogliarchs buy massive London mansions and basically leave them for staff to look after. Chester square in Belgravia is a good example.

Partyatnumber10 · 24/02/2022 23:18

Ok, nobody knows for sure what will happen, nobody has a crystal ball but for what it's worth here's what I think:

The war between Russia and Ukraine will last a few weeks or moths, bloody and utterly horrible.

Leaders of other countries will tinker around the edges, giving sanctions, taking lots of refugees and saying how terrible it all is but the won't actually do anything significant because pretty much nobody wants WW3.

Eventually Russia will get Ukraine back, we'll see lots of rioting and unpleasant reports from there but gradually other news items will replace this and we'll lose interest.

Then all we can do is hope that pp was right and Putin is at the end of his time and is replaced by somebody saner.

So no, basically in the short to medium term I don't think the U.K. is any particular danger although the thought of a China/Russia alliance long term gives me the shivers.

hereforalongtimenotagoodtime · 24/02/2022 23:19

Thank you for all being kind and explaining things to me in simple terms. I feel a little less panicked now. Thanks

It really isn’t. Think of all the oligarchs’ kids at Eton, if nothing else.

Cyberattack yes possibly. Sponsoring uk terrorists, 100%, probably already happening. Nukes, nope. Not while Russian money is so heavily invested in London property.
