It's not WW3

To wish people would stop conflating the Ukrainian invasion with WW3.

It's shite and completely unacceptable and my thoughts are with thee innocent people affected but it is not a world war and isn't going to become one.

IABU - WW3 is here
IANBU - it's a localised war.

@Undecicive Well, I'm Russian and I can tell you that that that fucking guy IS in fact mad and I hope someone is brave enough to finally assassinate him (highly unlikely as he has killed/imprisoned anyone remotely in opposition)

Annoymouser2 · 24/02/2022 21:52

We only get told one side and to believe it, america has been poking and poking for years at russia now america has what it wanted, russia bad, america good. Same as usual we belueve what the media outlets tell us. But truth is if war breaks out its not the rich elites kids heading to war its ours. Weve had covid, we are having crippling price hikes and now war its if this was the agenda all along. Sad times ahead for us

@FrownedUpon

Stupid thread. There is no way of knowing how this will pan out. It certainly isn’t just a localised war and by stating that, you sound really ignorant.
Agree totally.

FatEggy you are offensive, you do know Paddy is a massive insult and slur, how inflammatory, I can see you have absolutely no morals

Many of us read all kinds of media, have critical thinking skills and make up our own minds. It is very clear from facts, not propaganda, what an awful regime Russia is.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 24/02/2022 22:24

They are vocally and publicly allies, with Orban stating the Russian demand are "reasonable "

Orban isn't Hungary, any more than Trump is the USA or Johnson is the UK.

The suggestion was that there are NATO countries which 'wouldn't fight' if they were invaded by Russia. I suggest that nobody in Hungary would accept being invaded by Russia again and Orban knows that - leaving aside Hungary's immediate expulsion from NATO and the EU.

Clearly I do, which is why I used 'scare quotes' and aimed the insult at those English people who use that term.

And yet he's still in office, longer than any other PM. You don't get invaded if you make a a deal beforehand.

Anyways you're right. No country has ever started/entered a war on the say so of it's PM. Oh wait...!

marieantoinehairnet · 24/02/2022 22:50

Here we have an expert, a fat eggy expert

FatFredsFriedEgg · 24/02/2022 22:53

Anyways you're right. No country has ever started/entered a war on the say so of it's PM. Oh wait...!

I understood the suggestion as being not that they entered a war, but that the people of Hungary would agree to being invaded again by Russia, based on Orban's opinions which he's seemingly rowed back on anyway now that push comes to shove.

Do you seriously suggest that the people of Hungary want to go back to being a de facto Russian colony rather than an an independent member of the EU and NATO?

Would you like your country to be colonised by Russia?

Apologies, I do accept that that may have sounded very different to how it was meant.
AlwaysLatte · 24/02/2022 23:00

It's not at the moment, but it will be if he crosses the line into a NATO country. There will be no choice but to join the war then. But hopefully he's testing the waters and will stop short of that.

It read to me like they wouldn't fight, and there would be no need if they are friendly to begin with. All it would take is a deal , like for example splitting the country in the middle, where both Hungary and Russia have interests.

You assumed it was about Hungary not fighting back if it was invaded, but there's no need for invasion.

And no I definitely don't want Russian invasion of my country. Been there, done that. Been there ,done that with Hungary too.Hence why I'm worried and I wouldn't necessarily trust certain countries to take up arms against an ally when there are other way to appease each other.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 24/02/2022 23:04

but it will be if he crosses the line into a NATO country.

But we're being told on here that Poland or Hungary may agree to Russia invading them - despite them presumably joining NATO so that Russia can't invade them again.

Tigersonvaseline · 24/02/2022 23:06

At no point when any major war started did anyone think it would spiral.

We are entering the the limbo land of events set in motion and the law of unintended consequences.

Suzi888 · 24/02/2022 23:07

I have it on good authority we won’t go to Ukraine- that would start WW3, we will just send support to bordering countries.

thegcatsmother · 24/02/2022 23:16

Many of the countries that border Ukraine are NATO nations, so we have to support them under Article 5. The defence planners in NATO will be able to see what needs to be done (which is boots on the ground), but getting the Heads of State and Governments to unanimously agree to that probably isn't on the cardsm

leopooh · 24/02/2022 23:18

The "west" have said as much, repeatedly 😆

extractorfactor · 24/02/2022 23:51

Did you ever learn about Churchill waving a famous bit of paper saying Hitler wouldn't invade Poland OP? Well that worked out well didn't it?

Putin has decided that what Putin wants he gets. It's a shame really he's making exactly the same mistakes as Lenin and Mussolini, they both did a certain amount of good for unifying their countries and then both went too far, you know it's that old saying 'power corrupts'.
When Vlad was younger he did do a certain amount for the 'greater good' but of course he's now become like Napoleon in Animal farm.

As for saying NATO will flatten Moscow....erm no you are wrong, they really really won't want to do that. What is happening right now is a massive amount of diplomatic talks to work out a way forward, and how to keep a lid on the war from bubbling over into a major catastrophe.

Finally warfare is very, very different now from previous wars, and because of this many diplomats will again be working bloody hard to keep people as safe as possible.

I feel desperately sorry for the Ukrainians though, and hope this is sorted out quickly.
