Repulsive trendy food

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/02/2022 21:25

Inspired by the dried fruit hate thread...

Is it only me that thinks most trendy/"healthy" food is overrated at best, downright nasty at worst?

Cauliflower rice does not have the taste or texture of rice. It's just soggy Cauliflower. Reheated it smells and tastes of fart.

Courgetti is wet and dilutes the sauce with its green sadwater.

Pomegranate, mangos and satsumas do not belong on salad, especially with a garlic dressing.

Advocados are only ok.

Siracha is just expensive hot sauce. There are loads that are better.

Overnight oats have the texture of wallpaper paste and are absolutely repugnant.

And nothing, NOTHING, should be served on a shovel or any other nonsense receptacle.

What the hell is Bubble Tea Confused
yak with frogspawn in twinings.co.uk/blogs/news/what-is-bubble-tea
BertieBotts · 21/02/2022 22:55

OMG I agree about foam. I always feel very uncultured but I get so grumpy about it. It usually appears on incredibly expensive meals and I highly resent paying for air Angry

Also combining weird flavours. I was so disappointed last time I went out for a meal because I ordered salmon which I expected to be a treat and it ended up having this stupid foam on it and to make matters worse there were about three totally clashing flavours on the plate. I can't remember what it was now, but I know there were apricots, which were really nice separately. The worst thing was my friend ordered the same and kept gushing about how nice it was while I was really disappointed and felt like a total pleb not being posh enough to enjoy the food :o

I can't eat more than a tiny amount of normal cheese due to an intolerance and I won't touch the vegan stuff, it looks and smells vile. Actually normal cheese is unappealing enough. I don't understand what is appealing about something that is sour and greasy.

I don't like the move towards massive amounts of buttercream on anything cake like. Give me fresh cream any day.

I actually prefer vegetables to carbs, I would like to try courgetti or cauliflower rice.

WeasilyPleased · 21/02/2022 22:56

I have a terrible confession to make. I love bubble tea (runs away)

MoonOnASpoon · 21/02/2022 22:56

Yes matcha - who decided it belongs in food? It’s just weird green dust that tastes of actual dust. Why is it things like cakes and chocolate?

Also, not really trendy, but posh - caviar. Most revolting food ever. Tastes horribly fishy and POPS in your mouth, bleugh ugh ugh.

Jackfruit looks so gross I haven’t even dared to try it yet!

Katya213 · 21/02/2022 22:56

@Norgie

Avocado Quinoa Couscous Kimchi Anything vegetarian. ( Sorry ) Sweet potatoes, aka yams Just about anything ' trendy ' really.
Yes, I agree with all of that list. Revolting.
SpaghettiNotCourgetti · 21/02/2022 22:56

Joystir59

I do genuinely love them.

Maybe we can give them a free pass on this thread because they're a classic, rather than a trend, then.

Although I do still think they're basically snot in a box.

Motorina · 21/02/2022 22:57

I actually really like buttercream.

Proper buttercream.

Made with actual butter.

Creamed.

That super sweet architectural stuff on cupcakes?

Only good for the bin.

(I feel like I've found my tribe.)

Katya213 · 21/02/2022 22:57

@Blankscreen

Smashed avocado on sourdough toast for 'brunch'.

Sorry but I think it is for wankers

🤣🤣🤣
Urbanisation · 21/02/2022 22:57

Agree with most of these especially green sadwater and vegan franken psuedo food in Tonka truck colours.

And I can confirm that bubble tea is absolutely disgusting. Think of the blandest nastiest milkshake you ever had in your life. Now add little balls of pus to it. That's bubble tea. Five quid to you, my fine fool.

ouch12345 · 21/02/2022 22:58

@WheelieBinPrincess kale in with loads of olive oil and salt and pepper or Chinese spice done in the oven!!!!

boatyardblues · 21/02/2022 22:58

OK, I’m still reading and have been triggered by mention of:

Salted caramel. Some of us have to watch our salt intake. Why ruin dessert with salt? Why???? It shouldn’t ever be an issue.

Afternoon tea: The cockblocker of the meal world. You can’t have a decent lunch so you’re sure you’ll enjoy the afternoon tea and get your money’s worth if its a posh establishment. If it’s decent it will ruin your appetite for dinner. If it’s crap, your seething resentment at the swizz will ruin your appetite for dinner. Brunch is afternoon tea’s cockblocking little sister.

Joystir59 · 21/02/2022 22:59

I ate some fake ham the other day. Absolutely vile. I agree that all the vegan and 'plant based' fake food is over processed garbage. It can't be good for a person. Arguably quite good for animals though I guess.

AfterSchoolWorry · 21/02/2022 22:59

@Sidge

The trend of serving burgers in brioche buns.

They’re sweet. I don’t want a sweet burger! I just want a burger bun. Ordering a burger that’s not in brioche so virtually impossible now.

And foams. Glad they seem to have passed by now. It always looked like someone had gobbed on your plate.

Oh yeah, I saw this yesterday on the menu where I was staying, I couldn't order any of the things I wanted as I can't bear sweet food invading a savory meal.
WinterIsAlwaysComing · 21/02/2022 23:00

I actually love a toasted piece of sun dried tomatoe sourdough (from the CO op), topped with some smashed avo (mixed with lime juice, salt pepper) and topped with chilly flakes. Yum!

ouch321 · 21/02/2022 23:00

Why do people keep saying cupcakes?

They're not a trend, they have been around for 30 years.

Also overnight oats is just porridge.

Joystir59 · 21/02/2022 23:00

I loved avocado, I love sour dough toast. I don't love one being smashed onto the other.

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/02/2022 23:01

@Zolla

With you on overnight oats 😷 or oats of any kind.

I hate overindulgent cakes/puddings. Freakshakes is a good example but everything has to be enormous with chocolate on top of chocolate on top of chocolate. I love cake. I love chocolate but it’s just silly. A simple brownie will suffice. The calories & sugar in these things must be eye watering.

Cucumber in water. No thanks. See also lemon or orange. I want water. Not water tasting vaguely of a fruit or vegetable. Like you’ve poured water into a glass you previously had some orange squash in.

I love vegan food.. I’m a fan of quinoa, I like cauliflower rice (got to be roasted first, roasted cauliflower is delicious). I love sweet potato fries but agree, why the upcharge? They are a very similar price to normal potatoes?!

Ooooh fuck yes to the water tampering!!

The worst is when you're at a wanky trendy bar, you ask for a tap water and they point to the 3 big vats of self service water with all manner of shite floating in it.

Nope.

Then the look like you're an absolute heathen for asking for a plain tap water.

Ummm I've just bought a cocktail thanks, if I wanted another I'd fucking ask for one. Just give me a water!!!

@Everydaydayisaschoolday

Kale is horrible and tastes of mud.
Agreed!
Joystir59 · 21/02/2022 23:01

I love real buttercream on real cake.

Zotter · 21/02/2022 23:01

I like fruits on my salad at times and especially with a garlic dressing.

I like beetroot in chocolate cake, adds moisture.

Don’t care if drinks come in mason jars or on slate, but draw the line at a shovel.

Everything else you mentioned agree with you OP.

justasking111 · 21/02/2022 23:02

Twice I've sent a meal back same posh pub. I gagged when I saw cuckoo spit on my meal. That went back

Creamed potatoes with black olives imagine grey mash with black bits just looked like they'd cooked rotten potatoes and tasted vile
