Repulsive trendy food

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/02/2022 21:25

Inspired by the dried fruit hate thread...

Is it only me that thinks most trendy/"healthy" food is overrated at best, downright nasty at worst?

Cauliflower rice does not have the taste or texture of rice. It's just soggy Cauliflower. Reheated it smells and tastes of fart.

Courgetti is wet and dilutes the sauce with its green sadwater.

Pomegranate, mangos and satsumas do not belong on salad, especially with a garlic dressing.

Advocados are only ok.

Siracha is just expensive hot sauce. There are loads that are better.

Overnight oats have the texture of wallpaper paste and are absolutely repugnant.

And nothing, NOTHING, should be served on a shovel or any other nonsense receptacle.

There are foods I find over-rated - saffron for example is too subtle, I can’t taste it in a paella but I’ve heard other people warn about adding too much as it’s overpowering.

Not keen on oysters - can eat to be polite but wouldn’t get excited about despite their theatrics.

Love Korean food - just wish we had a restaurant close by - have a cookbook written by a Bristish/Korean couple that’s a real fusion of the two types of cooking.

There’s not many foods I feel are disgusting but there are many times when food I’ve eaten has not been prepared properly and it was a poor example. I’ve had many bland oranges but the good ones are what I think an orange should taste like. My kids make overnight oats and they love them but they’ve had bad experiences of them in cafes. Homemade kimchi was much better than shop bought, jarred peso is horrible, fresh pesto is lovely. Alphonso mangos are mind blowing - Kent mangos are like eating a piece of suede. Sometimes you haters might just have tried a bad example of a great food, but it doesn’t really matter what you like to eat to anyone else but you.

Curious about all the hating on vegan food I can’t eat coconut so usually I avoid the fake meat cheese stuff, but I am curious about it.

Oh more let’s remind posters how unsophisticated they are Hmm

For family family weddings/parties

Pretentious foods are usually foods that have been invented or chosen to show off, but are not actually all that good. It could be to show off how healthy you are, or sophisticated, or rich, whatever. Or people following food trends to be hip rather than because they are really keen on the food.

That makes it even more of a ridiculous concept. So if there are “pretentious/wanky” foods, what are “chavy” foods? If there is one side of the spectrum, surely there is one for the other, right?

queenofarles · 25/02/2022 11:27

Are açaí bowls healthy ? Or do they just make whoever is ordering them cool and sophisticated?

I don't know what that poster meant, but I'm going to go with "snail porridge" as one. Courtesy of Heston Blumenthal.

Aloe Vera juice is a common drink in several Asian countries (constantly saw them in most world foods aisles). Açai bowls are Brazilian (generally healthy). Activated charcoal, I saw years ago usually in toothpaste from Japan or Korea before it was in the West, drinking it may be a more recent thing but it has been historically used for centuries for other things in concerns with the human body.

justasking111 · 25/02/2022 17:57

Well the pangolin scandal, shark fin, etc. Might not be a trend but their desirability are deeply embedded as a magical food. No idea what pangolin tastes of nor shark fin. BUT it's sought after

TheMarmaladeYears · 25/02/2022 18:08

@Everydaydayisaschoolday

Kale is horrible and tastes of mud.
Absolutely. Or as my mother once said 'Kale is my food's food'. Someone, somewhere, has been taking the piss, wholesale, with kale.
scottishnames · 25/02/2022 19:25

With respect Marmalade utter rubbish. Whether you like kail or not, the word 'kailyard' has been used as a synonym for 'kitchen garden' for literally hundreds of years in Scotland. That's perfectly serious. Fact. It's not new, or pretentious.

And, this is just an opinion, properly cooked kale can be delicious.

jamandmarmaladeoncrumpets · 26/02/2022 07:10

I recommend you buy whole leaf Kale and strip it off the stalks before cooking: it's much sweeter compared to the shredded type in a bag.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 26/02/2022 08:48

Bake it in the oven with salt and chilli flakes … delicious

lightisnotwhite · 26/02/2022 08:55

I like to have wanky pesto out of kale, garlic and nuts shoved in a blender. Good way to use up the kale I bought but no one but he likes.

TheVolturi · 26/02/2022 09:05

Avocado's taste like semen 😳
Totally agree about cauliflower rice I was so disappointed.

ReeseWitherfork · 26/02/2022 09:21

I feel personally offended by the person who mentioned salted caramel.

Has anyone mentioned how wanky social media has become for toddler meals?

AmbushedByCake1 · 26/02/2022 09:22

ThumbWitchesAbroad you didn't like the snail porridge? Or you object to the concept? I was lucky enough to eat at the fat duck and the snail porridge was delicious. You'd have to like snails though!

phoenixrosehere · 26/02/2022 09:28

What was the consistency like for the porridge? I had snails for the first time baked in garlic butter and loved it (reminded me of mussels) but had it somewhere else in a cream sauce and found it was too rich and heavy for me.

Lesserspottedmama · 26/02/2022 09:30

Cupcakes, even worse if they have edible glitter and edible declarations on. It’s something that a five year old would think they’d want - can’t fathom adults buying them.
Vegan fake ‘meats’. You must be really dim to eat this muck and call it food. If you are vegan then just eat real food made from real ingredients ffs!

Lesserspottedmama · 26/02/2022 09:32

Smoothie bowls. Each to their own but I do snigger to myself when I see people sharing them on Instagram, often while doing a yoga pose Grin

PenStation · 26/02/2022 09:41

Kale has been grown in the UK at least since my grandparents were kids. It used to be fed to cows. I like it because it cooks quickly but why is it trendy?

AmbushedByCake1 · 26/02/2022 09:46

Phoenixrosehere the porridge was very savoury and buttery. Not creamy. I think the best way I've had snails was in Spain when they were served with a rich bolognese type sauce; delicious.

AmbushedByCake1 · 26/02/2022 09:48

Wasn't kale trendy about 10 years ago? Something to do with Gwyneth Paltrow I think 😂

Anyway I don't eat food because it's trendy, I eat what tastes good to me. I love kale, cheap as chips, healthy, great boiled or stir fried or roasted to a crisp. Even my 6 year old likes it.

PenStation · 26/02/2022 10:21

Yes same, even my teens eat it. Don’t understand the lack of kale love!

phoenixrosehere · 26/02/2022 10:28

I like it because it cooks quickly but why is it trendy?

I’ve noticed that anything that is typically seen as healthy but not “normal” or well-known seems to be trendy. When I was looking for ways to eat healthier after entering uni and moving to a city, several of the foods mentioned here came up and that was 15 years ago. It wasn’t long ago that non-dairy milks were considered trendy and jokes were made about them and now they are a staple. Give it another five years and people will have a new list of foods to be considered trendy that are really just not the norm for them.

the porridge was very savoury and buttery. Not creamy. I think the best way I've had snails was in Spain when they were served with a rich bolognese type sauce; delicious.

I’d give both of those a go. :-)

@TheMarmaladeYears
Your mum sounds like one of those ‘can’t have a meal without meat’ people
