Repulsive trendy food

Inspired by the dried fruit hate thread...

Is it only me that thinks most trendy/"healthy" food is overrated at best, downright nasty at worst?

Cauliflower rice does not have the taste or texture of rice. It's just soggy Cauliflower. Reheated it smells and tastes of fart.

Courgetti is wet and dilutes the sauce with its green sadwater.

Pomegranate, mangos and satsumas do not belong on salad, especially with a garlic dressing.

Advocados are only ok.

Siracha is just expensive hot sauce. There are loads that are better.

Overnight oats have the texture of wallpaper paste and are absolutely repugnant.

And nothing, NOTHING, should be served on a shovel or any other nonsense receptacle.

I bloody love bubble tea. And I’m very much over 40.

Then again, I was the sole weirdo who loved school dinner frogspawn pudding.

pinkpantherpink · 22/02/2022 20:04

@WheelieBinPrincess

Green sadwater is very good. I like that a lot.

Why do sweet potato fries have a SURCHARGE of £2.50 when they’re obviously not as good as normal fries and are mostly like chopped up limp orange earthworms. Hardly anywhere does them nice.

This!!!!

@Longdistance

What is it about being served food on a black slate tile? I bet it’s never washed properly either 🤮 Afternoon tea. It’s a bunch of finger sandwiches with the crust cut off and teeny tiny cake portions that last two seconds to eat. Those awful sharing boxes with food strewn around in them like someone has shaken the box.
Black slate tile is bad but wooden chopping board is worse, no way can that be hygienically cleaned.

(I like beetroot).

I detest the trend for vegan everything, added nutmeg/cinnamon etc. and far too much sugar in savoury items. And lots of palm/coconut oil disguised in the ingredients list as 'vegetable oil'.

I have never ordered anything 'dirty' and I never will.

kennycat · 22/02/2022 20:16

Sourdough rolls with a burger. Although in its favour your burn more calories than you consume chewing through the bugger.

Avocado. Fine but I’d never go out of my way for one. A fruit that’s fatty you say? No thanks!

And yes to a PP ‘dirty’ anything.

sas1879 · 22/02/2022 20:24

As someone who cant eat Rice,pasta,potatoes,pizzas,pastry,cakes,ice cream,carrots,sweet potatoes,Milk,cream,bread,peas,sweetcorn, a lot of fruit etc

Might I suggest not going to regular pizza places and instead go to Middle Eastern grocers or delis? , Lahmaçun flat breads is so delish and has no cheese only meat. , zaatar flat breads has only olive oil and herbs and sesame , it’s one of my favourite food , could easily eat it everyday. if your near London you’d probably find one in every corner!

Or you could go to an Authentic pizza place with wood fired oven and ask for a marinara pizza, but I have had anything as Authentic or tasty as the ones in Italy.

Dramaticpenguin · 22/02/2022 20:33

Bottomless brunch upsets me because I thought it meant as much breakfast food as I can eat, not as much prosecco I can drink! If I'm out in the day, the chances are I'll be driving later, so that's no good to me! I want loads of bacon and eggs and croissants etc!

Innocenta · 22/02/2022 20:35

Out of curiosity, what makes your options so restricted? @sas1879 (Asking because I also have a lot of complex restrictions for medical reasons, on top of being vegan!)

bossybloss · 22/02/2022 21:06

Sharing boxes ...yeuch !

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 22/02/2022 21:20

I've just seen this and thought of you all on this thread - cocktails poured from picture frames 🤣🤣🤣 I would love to go to this place as the whole experience plus the food looks amazing, but can't imagine many of you would be tagging along with me 😂

I have to sheepishly admit time liking quite a lot of food fads, but someone gave me a can of kombucha to try after raving about it and I really thought it tasted disgusting.

BertieBotts · 22/02/2022 21:29

I'm not keen on the seaweed stuff in sushi and unfortunately I find a lot of it has that so it ruins it for me. And then I'm also not keen on the thickness of the chunks of fish and I don't like shellfish, so ngiri doesn't appeal to me either. I like smoked salmon but only when it's sliced really thinly and I can take small bites. Sushi sort of has to be eaten in one go otherwise it falls apart!

I quite like sushi rice on its own, a friend of mine lived in Japan for a while and when we had a BBQ she brought sticky sushi rice balls, rolled in soy sauce and then made crispy on the BBQ, that was lush! Also I enjoy a lot of the grilled meat/tempura dishes, so I can usually find something to eat if we go to a sushi place.

TheChosenTwo · 22/02/2022 21:30

Actually @WineGetsMeThroughIt I would totally go there with you Grin
It looks stupid enough for me to get on board with to be honest!!

Trivium4all · 22/02/2022 21:40

@queenofarles

Dried mushroom snacks 😣, thought they'd be salty and crispy , they were dry bland and oily! , had horrible tummy ache for the entire day.
Sorry if I'm getting wrong what you tried, but did you buy a bag of dried mushrooms and try to eat them out of the bag, as a snack? That's not what you're meant to do: you're meant to reconstitute them with hot water (takes about 15-20 minutes), and then cook with them. They don't have the same texture as fresh mushrooms, so are best in risotto or soup or stew. Porcini are especially common to get dried, and you most certainly shouldn't eat those without cooking them first. So I'm not surprised you had a tummy ache!

I confess to liking bubble tea (but I also had it first in Taiwan). And proper Sauerkraut (you're supposed to rinse it before you spice it up with various spices and heat it up, with e.g. sausages in it. If you ate it straight, I'm not surprised you didn't feel great afterwards!). And kale, if it's made North-German style with cured pork in, or sausages, or a fried egg and fried potatoes with it. The trick with kale is to add a bit of sugar at the end. You blanch it first, fry up some onions in butter, add the kale and some stock, and cook it slowly. It should be a rib-sticking winter food, not a health shake ingredient!

Bertiebiscuit · 22/02/2022 22:07

Totally agree - much of this so called 'modern' or 'clean' food is overpriced, fussy and faddish - I hate kale, beetroot in anything except borsch, and all the trendy 'new' ingredients like pea pod shoots, all taste awful, and don't even get me started on cauliflower or courgettes as substitute for rice or pasta ffs - all a con, and don't get me started on fruit in salad🤢, plus food must always be served on a China plate or a bowl, nothibg else will do

Idontcareboutthestateofmyhair · 22/02/2022 22:11

Salt n chilli fucking everything!!

queenofarles · 22/02/2022 22:11

Trivium4all. No , they are packaged like crisps , and usually in health snacks food section, just like dried peas and corn snacks , but mushrooms ! Take it from me you don’t want to try them , no matter what it says on the packet , they are nothing like what I hoped, they tasted dry and oily and sweet , so weird 😣.

Edamame beans, horrible little feckers!

usethedata · 22/02/2022 22:15

Skyr. I think it's Icelandic. "Sold" to me as Greek yogurt with even higher protein. Inedible yogurt cheese.

I LOVE edamame beans.
CatJumperTwat · 22/02/2022 22:18

Edamame beans are the bomb.

Marmelace · 22/02/2022 22:18

@Monopolyiscrap

I wish I could like them. I don't dislike many foods so badly, apart from crunchy bars.
