Repulsive trendy food

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/02/2022 21:25

Inspired by the dried fruit hate thread...

Is it only me that thinks most trendy/"healthy" food is overrated at best, downright nasty at worst?

Cauliflower rice does not have the taste or texture of rice. It's just soggy Cauliflower. Reheated it smells and tastes of fart.

Courgetti is wet and dilutes the sauce with its green sadwater.

Pomegranate, mangos and satsumas do not belong on salad, especially with a garlic dressing.

Advocados are only ok.

Siracha is just expensive hot sauce. There are loads that are better.

Overnight oats have the texture of wallpaper paste and are absolutely repugnant.

And nothing, NOTHING, should be served on a shovel or any other nonsense receptacle.

Wow, some of you are really missing out on some delicious food! Just because something is trendy, doesn't mean it's not good. See, for example, avocado toast.

Salted caramel is one of the best things every invented. Regular caramel is fine, but add some salt and it's heavenly.

I really like kale. Definitely my favorite leafy green.

Oysters aren't trendy, are they? But there's nothing better than a raw fresh cold water oyster on the half shell. It's like eating the ocean. It's better than sex.

CountryMouse22 · 22/02/2022 18:37

Lentils are little pellets of mud.

They're not "trendy" though, are they?
Moonshine90 · 22/02/2022 18:50

Apparently sweet potato isn’t actually any better for you (calorie or health wise) so what’s the point other than the £50 surcharge. Pomegranate seeds are the devils teeth.

FootieMama · 22/02/2022 19:04

Probably agree with cauliflower rice. But love salads with mangoes, courgettes and avocado. Not in the same salad. But I like most vegetables . Never tried a vegan burger and I am really annoyed that most gluten free food is now vegan. I like real cheese

timetochangeusername · 22/02/2022 19:05

In pizza places I always order the veggie pizza but with real cheese and dd who can't eat cheese orders a meat pizza but with no cheese !

I'm trying to give up dairy but it's hard to
Order vegan out that isn't a pile of fake shit, so now I eat vegan (and hen nation eggs) at home and just eat cheesy stuff as a treat out and about.

I like kale though , esp cavalo Nero, but I fry it with garlic don't eat it as a 'superfood'

Dd has bubble tea. It's frogspawn

no....YOU think avocado toast is delicious. I think its slimey yak that ruins good toast.
justasking111 · 22/02/2022 19:06

Out of interest statistically what are the numbers of vegetarians in this country ditto vegans

godmum56 · 22/02/2022 19:09

@Clytemnestra4

Seems there’s a lot of us with similar views. Maybe there’s a gap in the market for a restaurant than unapologetically caters to only vegetarians, and has at least one of cheese, milk or eggs in every dish!
I'd go there and i am an unshamed meat and fish eater. I do often eat a vegetarian meal but its because that's the stuff that fancy for that meal and not because I have gone "oh I am going plant based tonight"
Mollysocks · 22/02/2022 19:09

Avocados aren’t slimy! What avocados are you eating?!

I agree @Anonymous48 some lemon juice and chilli flakes and it’s chefs kiss

Sushi 🤢

I always find this one weird considering there are several different types of sushi, it’s not just one thing. It’s like someone saying they don’t like curry. My DH didn’t like sushi (never actually tried it) until I took him to a Japanese restaurant and ordered different types of sushi. He ended up loving nigiri. It was just the seaweed part he wasn’t keen on.

CatJumperTwat · 22/02/2022 19:14

Avocado toast really isn't good though, trendy or not.

Roxy69 · 22/02/2022 19:16

@SpaghettiNotCourgetti

I HATE cupcakes. What was wrong with the fairy cakes or butterfly cakes of my childhood, without the pounds of horrible buttercream? Some dribbly white icing and some hundreds and thousands and you've got a cake from heaven.

I would also put the Cadbury Creations bars into this Room 101 of trendy food. Why - WHY - would I adulterate chocolate with jelly beans? Or fucking Oreos? Or popcorn?

I'm not made for modern food life.

With you on the cupcakes, American import which is not only unhealthy but disgusting to eat. Cadbury's is now American so that explains the overkill on chocolate. I think its a plot to make us as obese as possible.
SSCCLL · 22/02/2022 19:19

Brunch is everything to me. Especially when my sourdough and eggs are topped with sriracha Smile

Kanaloa · 22/02/2022 19:27

Again I don’t think I’d say sushi is ‘trendy.’ People have been eating it for many many many years. Ditto kimchi/lentils etc. Some of this stuff is just normal food that happens to be foreign. I wouldn’t even say sushi is a new ‘trend’ in the uk, it’s been here ages.

Innocenta · 22/02/2022 19:30

@WineGetsMeThroughIt You are posting anti-vegan myths. Are you not aware that on average vegetarians live seven years longer, and vegans fifteen years longer than omnivores?

Again, I think there is no reasonable expectation for everyone to go vegan overnight. But you shouldn't promote negative ideas about a lifestyle with known, massive benefits to our health and the planet.

Where are you dining that you struggle to get good, non-fake-meat vegan food? There are many amazing places in London where it's easy to avoid fake meats (unless used in traditional contexts, e.g. tofu in vegan Chinese).

It's true that sadly, fake meat predominates in some areas. Sad

Snap! I’m branching this weekend and cannot wait for my smashed avocado sourdough with poached eggs and hot sauce
Barbarolo · 22/02/2022 19:35

Matcha - straight out of the flymo 🤢🤢

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/02/2022 19:36

Ditto to cupcakes. Too big and always far too much icing, so often in garish artificial colours, too.

I still make fairy cakes with Gdcs, and for their birthday parties. Chocolate ones, with a little chocolate icing, and a Smartie on top, always go like, well, hot cakes..

Ajl46 · 22/02/2022 19:39

@cakewitch

We are VERY angry with food tonight aren't we??? Was just going to mention "grazing tables" and "munchie boxes" can I add "protein balls" too.. ?? Those things that look like fat balls you put out for the birds. Vile. Surely nobody could even pretend to like them?
I genuinely really like these ones!! uk.bouncefoods.com/product/peanut/
mylifestory · 22/02/2022 19:40

anything vegan? ;-)

Prettybubblesintheair · 22/02/2022 19:49

@Ddot

Just tried maple butter, found it in lidl, bloody lovely. Bit off topic but had to let you know yummmmmy on toast
I googled this but can’t find it! Are you in the uk?
MakkaPakkas · 22/02/2022 19:51

Chia pudding WTF is this desecration of the genre of pudding?
Matcha flavoured anything. Revolting
Kombucha, it's fruit juice gone manky and it doesn't even get you pissed

Most veggies last far longer (I have been veggie most of my life as I cant eat read meat and cut out chicken as a child, many veggies I know are the same) than most vegans.

Vegans fall into two camps, the moral vegans that I know a few of and the 'fad vegan' that are doing it for 'veganuary' and things like that which unfortunately seems to be loads at any one time as they dip and dive in even though non of them really are.

The fake meats are usually aimed at them not us long lifers.
