Repulsive trendy food

828 replies

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/02/2022 21:25

Inspired by the dried fruit hate thread...

Is it only me that thinks most trendy/"healthy" food is overrated at best, downright nasty at worst?

Cauliflower rice does not have the taste or texture of rice. It's just soggy Cauliflower. Reheated it smells and tastes of fart.

Courgetti is wet and dilutes the sauce with its green sadwater.

Pomegranate, mangos and satsumas do not belong on salad, especially with a garlic dressing.

Advocados are only ok.

Siracha is just expensive hot sauce. There are loads that are better.

Overnight oats have the texture of wallpaper paste and are absolutely repugnant.

And nothing, NOTHING, should be served on a shovel or any other nonsense receptacle.

@Mollysocks

So many things on here are just foods, not pretentious wankery or whatever you want to call them. Lots are just staple foods for other cultures eg quinoa or kimchi, or are basic fairly bland things like avocado

I suppose if your idea of food heaven is meat and two veg or mince and potatoes etc then yes, these food are too much, but my goodness your meals must be dull

This

I agree with this- people are calling things wanky that are just normal foods. Yes, it may be annoying seeing them everywhere but that's not the same as 'repulsive'

However there are some that genuinely aren't good and are just fads that will die, like dirty fries, that is just pretentious crap. That's what the op is really about, or should be

longwayoff · 22/02/2022 16:40

I've eaten Dirty Fries once. Sadly, they were bloody delicious. Potato, cheese, chili, bacon, more cheese. Just the once though or I'd be eating them all the time.

@Terfydactyl Tempeh!

@WineGetsMeThroughIt Fake meats probably aren't great compared to being a whole food vegan, but it's alarmist to imply eating meat is safer and better, when there's already an existing literature showing the risks and bad outcomes associated with that. Obviously everyone isn't going to turn around and go vegan overnight! But I thought your post (which otherwise talked a lot of sense) was really spoiled by the anti-vegan sentiment at the end.

justasking111 · 22/02/2022 17:03

Love crispy seaweed but Cook in a wok. Jellied eels somewhat insipid. I love a KFC nearly as good as chicken schnitzel.

We eat a lot of game in the winter . OH makes chicken pie with added pheasant meat in a cider sauce. Game is low cholesterol so pretty healthy.

Sometimes it's the look, smell that puts folks off which is instinctive at a subconscious level caveman style.

Two of my children still can't abide mushroom. They hated eggs as children, slimy so that was texture.

Tapioca at school I couldn't swallow ditto semolina and porridge again texture

timetochangeusername · 22/02/2022 17:09

Vegan food that tries to be meat. I'm semi vegan and there is so much nice food to make it doesn't have to be a chicken substitute

ScrambledSmegs · 22/02/2022 17:29

I agree that most of the stuff mentioned in here, whether it be kimchi, cupcakes or kefir, suffers from being made badly. These things should taste great, if not demand your money back.

The best cupcakes I ever had were from a stall in a market in Hackney - proof that you don't need to go to a fancy bakery in primrose hill and pay a months rent to have a decent one.

Cauliflower rice and courgetti are abominations though.

My post wasn't meant to be anti-vegan. Just anti-vegan fake meat which is highly highly processed and filled with highly inflammatory vegetable oils and soy which increases oestrogen in women and is linked to cancer, sodium.

There are 19 ingredients in Beyond Meat mince, vs 1 ingredient in beef mince.

If people want to be vegan, then they should be vegan. But I'd encourage them to eat actual vegetables rather than processed foods. They also shouldn't let marketing and food companies kid them into thinking that a fake meat product is healthy. There are also studies that show women who are eating a vegan diet are severely lacking in the nutrients they need to thrive.

ladyluck13 · 22/02/2022 17:58

I actually love overnight oats (if done properly) and bubble tea, cos I love chewing the tapioca balls..hides..
However, I do agree that jackfruit is vomit inducing, as is vegan cheese.

Give me my cheese!!

lilywillywoo · 22/02/2022 18:07

@SpaghettiNotCourgetti

I HATE cupcakes. What was wrong with the fairy cakes or butterfly cakes of my childhood, without the pounds of horrible buttercream? Some dribbly white icing and some hundreds and thousands and you've got a cake from heaven.

I would also put the Cadbury Creations bars into this Room 101 of trendy food. Why - WHY - would I adulterate chocolate with jelly beans? Or fucking Oreos? Or popcorn?

I'm not made for modern food life.

Completely agree! Love a fairy cake with normal icing. Hate buttercream on 'cupcakes'

I feel seen as someone who’s been veggie for 20yrs

@Cheeseandlobster

Vegan food. Don't get me wrong I have vegan friends and I love eating at their homes. But eating out, why do all veggie options have to be vegan? I rarely eat meat but I do want proper cheese and eggs and butter. I went to a vegan/ vegetarian restaurant with a vegan friend and another friend recently. We paid a huge amount of money for vegan tapas that was beautifully presented but no substance. My other friend went to the chippy on the way home, I had beans on toast when I got home and neither of us have been able to tell our vegan friend that we did not rate her all time favourite restaurant at all
100% - wtf have all good veggie restaurants gone vegan. I’m not totally vegetarian but prefer to eat veggie and I do not want to eat ‘plant based’ unless the dish is ‘naturally’ vegan like a curry.
JustDanceAddict · 22/02/2022 18:10

I want a bean burger, not vegan, not mushroom and not halloumi!!

Clytemnestra4 · 22/02/2022 18:11

@ivygem In one restaurant I may well have muttered to myself something about being vegetarian since the 1990s i.e. since before many of these vegans were born.

Yes! This drives me mad. I am a veggie but not vegan, I love eggs, cheese, cream and I want to eat them when I go out to dinner and not be left with a vegan dish as the only option. Or mushroom feckin risotto. It's always mushroom risotto and it makes me want to cry.

I couldn’t agree more! I have been vegetarian for over 30 years, and had to put up with a veggie lasagne in any pubs I ate in. Then suddenly, it became trendy to be vegan, and pubs/restaurants can’t be bothered to make 2 different meals. We all have to have vegan food. I get so annoyed to see 143 different meat or fish dishes on a menu, and a vegan curry….. I can’t even eat spicy food.
Clytemnestra4 · 22/02/2022 18:14

Seems there’s a lot of us with similar views. Maybe there’s a gap in the market for a restaurant than unapologetically caters to only vegetarians, and has at least one of cheese, milk or eggs in every dish!

MarvellousMonsters · 22/02/2022 18:18

"Also cupcakes. The sponge is usually dry and tastes of empty calories and the topping is too sweet."

Shop bought cake is almost always bitterly disappointing.

However, if your cauli rice and courgette are soggy & disapointing you're cooking them wrong.

keeptheaspidistra · 22/02/2022 18:18

I'm guilty of eating a lot of these, I feel personally attacked 😅 even if you are right about farts and soggy green water.

I hate when my food comes on slate or a wooden board. I like a nice round, plain white plate so i can tell it's clean!

Yespresh · 22/02/2022 18:19

And the word ‘artisan’ should just be replaced with expensive unless made by topless maidens.

Lovemusic33 · 22/02/2022 18:20

I like fruit in salads, didn’t realise it was a new thing.

Don’t like avocado 🤢, seems to be in everything now, especially salads and on toast.

Being a vegan used to mean eating lots of fruit, veg and beans. Vegans used to be underweight, now they have all this fake processed look a like meat which isn’t healthy (vegans are getting bigger) 🤣.

Overnight oats are disgusting, like eating cold porridge with the sour taste of yoghurt and some mushy fruit.

Sushi 🤢

Vegan cheese 🤢

Lincslady53 · 22/02/2022 18:26

@Everydaydayisaschoolday

Kale is horrible and tastes of mud.
If you lightly blanch Kale, then drizzle some walnut oil over it, you will find it slides off your plate and into the bin very easily.
Dibbydoos · 22/02/2022 18:26

I know several of tge foods you mention have become trendy but I've been eating them for donkeys.

I was introduced to avocados in 1984 at uni by a friend. They tasted of starch to me initially but I git to liking them.

Ive eaten pomegranates since I can remember. We had them as pure fruit or in salads- but def no dressing unless it was a clear fruit based one. Same with other salad plus fruit, yum but no dressing or maybe thousand island on the side.

My dad was a chief cook, so he made tge oats etc - no idea what he did but they were creamy and yummy. I've never got mine like that, do tend to use pack porridge Grin

I can't conceive of eating insects though. No matter how your served with a praying mantis, it's a preying mantis, and no, I don't want to try it!!!

DottyHarmer · 22/02/2022 18:28

I feel sorry for restaurants/catering establishments, as people seem to have a wide range of what they call “vegetarian” or “vegan”. It’s easier for them to do one vegan option which people can’t object to (except on taste grounds!). I went to a vegan wedding last year. The couple weren’t even vegans but after fielding a million and one “food preference” requests they went with the Well, you can’t complain about this version.

I love vegetarian food; vegan - especially silly vegan “inventive” meals - not so much. I agree BRING BACK VEGETARIAN!!
