Repulsive trendy food

828 replies

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/02/2022 21:25

Inspired by the dried fruit hate thread...

Is it only me that thinks most trendy/"healthy" food is overrated at best, downright nasty at worst?

Cauliflower rice does not have the taste or texture of rice. It's just soggy Cauliflower. Reheated it smells and tastes of fart.

Courgetti is wet and dilutes the sauce with its green sadwater.

Pomegranate, mangos and satsumas do not belong on salad, especially with a garlic dressing.

Advocados are only ok.

Siracha is just expensive hot sauce. There are loads that are better.

Overnight oats have the texture of wallpaper paste and are absolutely repugnant.

And nothing, NOTHING, should be served on a shovel or any other nonsense receptacle.

Decided to try and make a chia pudding back in the days I thought it was a good idea to spend ages fannying about making meals for a weaning baby and she got one stuck on her eyeball and it was HORRIBLE

Into the bin they go!

Snoopsnoggysnog · 22/02/2022 14:49

I love coconut water and avocado, but grew up with those.
Overnight oats - vile!
Those crisps made out of chickpeas - Hippeas or some stupid name - absolutely revolting.

BelleNoir · 22/02/2022 14:51

Agree with most of the things on here but have to confess to loving Bubble tea and sushi

Fanacapan · 22/02/2022 14:52

Butternut squash - you take your life in your hands peeling and chopping and it tastes of nothing! Quite good for the dog’s licky mat though!

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 22/02/2022 14:52

For those making chia pudding, how are you making it? I'm not sure what you're doing, but I love it when I mix with almond milk, some sweetener, a splash of vanilla and then I stir in some double cream when I'm about to eat it in the morning. It's lovely topped with berries, nuts or granola. Sometimes I mix in a flavoured protein powder as well and it's delicious. Just chia seeds mixed with a milk or liquid of any kind wouldn't be very nice at all. That being said, the texture does take some getting used to, but I love it.

MrsClatterbuck · 22/02/2022 14:52

@SpaghettiNotCourgetti

I've never had bubble tea but I bet that's disgusting, too. Like frogspawn coming up through your straw Envy
Had it once years ago when visiting friends abroad. It was in a really nice mall and I thought it looked refreshing. It was vile and I couldn't drink it after just one sip.

I wouldn’t say butternut squash was trendy Grin but you should try it roasted with some tandoori spice or paste.
WineGetsMeThroughIt · 22/02/2022 14:55

"I wouldn’t say butternut squash was trendy but you should try it roasted with some tandoori spice or paste."

But then would that be considered making it trendy? 😂

This thread has confirmed why I am eternally disappointed going out for something to eat. Too many trends and fads, too much food cooked badly and then the sinking realisation that I have just spent £££ on something I could have prepared to my liking and cooked better at home.

muckandnettles · 22/02/2022 14:57

Has anyone mentioned 'deconstructed' yet? That was a very disappointing apple crumble in a wanky arty restaurant I can tell you.

42isthemeaning · 22/02/2022 15:01

@MotherOfWhippets

I'm so fed up of Vegan food - I'm veggie - I bloody want eggs and cheese! But restaurants seem to kill two birds with one stone now and everything is vegan with bloody jackfruit. I'm not getting at Vegans - it's just means that there's no decent veggie food anymore.
I agree so much with this. Also, I loathe any kind of fake meat, etc. it's generally disgusting in texture and what IS it, exactly? I don't want to eat something so highly processed - there's enough processed food in my diet as it is. I would rather have some halloumi!
phoenixrosehere · 22/02/2022 15:07

Bao buns. Like warm insulating foam

Where are you getting them where they taste like that?!

Jaxhog · 22/02/2022 15:08

@Everydaydayisaschoolday

Kale is horrible and tastes of mud.
I recently discovered that you can crisp it in the oven. It's what Chinese take-aways- call 'crispy seaweed'. It's absolutely delicious!
D0lphine · 22/02/2022 15:08

@BlooperReel

Whoever said coconut and aloe waters, THANKYOU! Absolutely rancid and I don't understand the appeal at all.

I will add Rocket, why is everyone obsessed with that bitter tasting shite peers over specs at Pret

Rocket is grim. Tastes like eating a handful of grass. Why is it on everything?
Ohshitiveturnedintomymother · 22/02/2022 15:11

I’ve not read the full thread, got to page 9 and my blood pressure was too high, but what do you people actually eat?

So many things on here are just foods, not pretentious wankery or whatever you want to call them. Lots are just staple foods for other cultures eg quinoa or kimchi, or are basic fairly bland things like avocado.

I suppose if your idea of food heaven is meat and two veg or mince and potatoes etc then yes, these food are too much, but my goodness your meals must be dull.

PenStation · 22/02/2022 15:18

This thread is attracting the fussy eaters and drama queens. I don’t like jellied eels or KFC so I just don’t eat them.

Pp, I hope you haven't been eating your insulation, I know there's an energy crisis but my god! Bao buns can't be that badGrin

ofwarren · 22/02/2022 15:23

The only thing I don't like that's been listed are oysters Confused
I tried it plain though. I expect it would have tasted nicer with flavourings on.

Don’t bother to peel or chop it. Halve lengthways and stick on a baking tray. Drizzle oil, salt and smoked paprika on. Roast in a hot oven until soft and a bit brown around the edges. From there you can eat it hot or skin it and mash it up.
ChampagneLassie · 22/02/2022 15:34

So many of the raw ingredients on here I like - my DP is doing keto so there is a lot of cauliflower rice and corgetti going on at the moment. We also have wheatgrass and spirulina in our kale and avocado smoothie every morning ;0 I don't think of any of this as "trendy" just healthy living.

My gripe would be increasingly pubs/restaurants doing really odd fusion food which doesn't work. Too many competing strong flavours all poorly executed. I'd much prefer "boring" old fashioned classics done well than a mish-mash of things that don't really go. I can't actually think of an example off the top of my head but its like they're trying to combine Asian/Meditarian/Middle Easter food all at once

Most of what I’ve read on here sounds like is the lack of having these foods cooked or made properly.

I don’t think there is any food on here so far that I don’t like and most of the supposed new trends I’ve had 10-15 years ago so not actually new but seemingly just arrived to the U.K. and I doubt they are as new here as some think they are.

yup, there are loads of things that I don't like but nobody tries to make KFC into something posh and trendy....not sure about the jellied eels
PenStation · 22/02/2022 15:49

I don’t go anywhere trendy, which is probably why Grin The occasional posh dinner is nice though!
