Repulsive trendy food

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/02/2022 21:25

Inspired by the dried fruit hate thread...

Is it only me that thinks most trendy/"healthy" food is overrated at best, downright nasty at worst?

Cauliflower rice does not have the taste or texture of rice. It's just soggy Cauliflower. Reheated it smells and tastes of fart.

Courgetti is wet and dilutes the sauce with its green sadwater.

Pomegranate, mangos and satsumas do not belong on salad, especially with a garlic dressing.

Advocados are only ok.

Siracha is just expensive hot sauce. There are loads that are better.

Overnight oats have the texture of wallpaper paste and are absolutely repugnant.

And nothing, NOTHING, should be served on a shovel or any other nonsense receptacle.

Urgh overnight oats, they're awful.

Over processed vegan food, the 'vegan bacon' is laughable, looks like a child has made it with plasticine.

I make those 4 layer sponge cakes covered in buttercream, which are made with real butter and proper eggs, they are very popular and I get lots of repeat customers and compliments. Lots of cake makers use that awful baking block or stork, no, no, no, no.

RantyAunty · 22/02/2022 00:09

Agree with the food along with the wankery presentations and somehow they charge £££.

smashed avocado on toast and kombucha

Because I'd enjoy paying ££ for some avocado on a piece of stale bland toast and wash it down with rotted leftover juice/tea.

Green sadwater Grin
what is green sadwater? what is sadwater??
Arnia · 22/02/2022 00:12

I mostly agree with a few exceptions. Also think it's cute you call it advocado as that's how my four year old pronounces it Grin

PickAChew · 22/02/2022 00:15

Isn't oat milk just starchy water? It has none of the nutritional benefits of actual milk. Barely any protein. Calcium and vitamins hacmve to be artificially added.

I'm lactose intolerant and do consume small amounts of lactofree but if I'm going to use a dairy substitute I stick with soya based as it's not going to give me a sugar crash. Almond milk should be great but almonds are expensive so it tends to be pretty much homeopathic. Anything containing pea protein gives me excruciating gut cramps.

TheUnexpectedPickle · 22/02/2022 00:15

Water. That is green and sad.

I actually love one type of vegan bacon, though generally don't have a lot of fake meat (unless I'm actually not trying to be healthy) as it is more like hot bacon crisps when cooked.

A lot of them look too meaty to me - if I wanted something the texture of actual bacon I'd just have bacon.

LadyinRead · 22/02/2022 00:19

Salad in a jar.

Motorina · 22/02/2022 00:22

@Arnia I think we all have the odd exception. I happen to love both avocado and sourdough toast, and will occassionally make myself avocado on toast as a quick lunch when working from home. It's more likely to be on warburtons than sourdough, because shopping organisation, but still.

But I know exactly what @TheUnexpectedPickle means about the sort of pretentious trendy places that put it on the menu for £14. Particularly if they're the sort of place that calls it Avocado Sourdough Lime (because all the most pretentious menus have their dishes written as a list of three ingredients), and prints the price in bold without the pound sign.

And she's 100% right on green courgette sadwater.

pawpaws2022 · 22/02/2022 00:22

@SockQueen

Brioche buns for burgers can fuck off too.
My local takeaway (REALLY good burgers) uses pretzel buns Someone asked if they were planning to do brioche ones. Once. The glare he got was something else Grin

‘ What the absolute fuck is dry aged carrot??’

I frequently find dry aged carrots at the back of the fridge, it’s a local speciality in our house.

DoingsSophie · 22/02/2022 00:24

Great thread, but um… are there really cheese and marmite hot cross buns out there? They sound amazing

FloBot7 · 22/02/2022 00:25

I bought some proper fermented sauerkraut in Sainsburys (as opposed to the pasteurised kind). I very excitedly made a Reuben sandwich during my lunch break. DH took one bite and said "oh good, this is not for me. Why does it taste like this?". I persevered and thought it wasn't as good as normal but i liked it. Then about half an hour later this weird floral soapy taste started repeating on me. Lasted several hours and I thought I'd never get rid of it again. That was my last foray into fermented vegetables.

melisma · 22/02/2022 00:25

Green sadwater and nonsense receptacle have absolutely made my week OP Grin

Wait, are you saying that vegan bacon is like Frazzles? 🤯
DoingsSophie · 22/02/2022 00:27

Never mind, just googled off to M&S with me

Rosehugger · 22/02/2022 00:28

I didn't like brioche at all until I had a burger in it, I love the combination of the slight sweetness with the savoury. It's not something I choose to eat regularly but I do think it's a tasty combination.

Rosehugger · 22/02/2022 00:31

@Socks The Aldi one and the Naked one they sell in Tesco are more like long strips of hot Frazzles when cooked. Really crispy and lovely with egg. They also remind me of 1990s veggie bacon I had as a student.

Me too. I've still got 2 in there leftover from Christmas 😂

Monopolyiscrap · 22/02/2022 00:36

I like vegan bacon. But I do not like actual bacon.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 22/02/2022 00:46

Ah I thought of the other random weird trendy things that make me wonder 'but why!?!?' Not necessarily because I don't like the flavour. But more so, I just don't understand these fads.

Mushroom coffee
Turmeric lattes
Smoothie bowls (why can't I just drink it?)
Oat bowls with loads of chocolate and caramel on them and trying to pass it off as healthy.

NeverChange · 22/02/2022 01:00

A lettuce burger!!

Only came across this at the weekend but apparently it's a new.

A friend was ordering takeaway from a burger joint. I'm watching weight so wasn't having any but he said he would check the healthy opinions which were

(1) A bunless burger
(2) A lettuce bun around the burger - 2 lettuce leaves wrapped around the burger.....ya that will compensate for the 600 calories in the burger!!!

Please tell me there isn't a demand for a lettuce burger!!!!
