Sheridan Smith & Keeley Hawes

Anyone else just fed up of seeing their faces? I don’t hate either of them & Sheridan in particular is extremely talented ..you can’t blame them either for taking all the work offered to them. But my lord they seem to be in bloody everything to the point i’m starting to avoid anything they are in.

(There must be male equivalents equally over exposed and ubiquitous but names are escaping me right now!)

Glad I don’t have a TV any more 😂

Iamthewombat · 21/02/2022 12:04

We might get more SS types coming through if we had more ensemble dramas. Not soap operas necessarily (although loads of good actors got their break in Coronation Street) but things like Clocking Off or The Street or No Offence.

Joanne Froggatt is a better actress than Sheridan Smith, for example. So is Liz White. Anna Friel is pretty good too. So I don’t understand why they aren’t getting a look in for the gritty northern bird parts that SS seems to be a shoo-in for.

SmellinOfTroy · 21/02/2022 12:08

@RedRobin100

No At least they are talented

I am however sick to the effing back teeth of seeing Paddy McGuinness and Romesh Ranganathan et al EVERYFUCKINGWHERE

oh totally agree

Romesh Ranganathan in Weakest Link is embarrassing - he's too fucking wooden

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 21/02/2022 12:09

Is it from a book Spider?

spudjulia · 21/02/2022 12:12

Think I've only seen SS in the teacher thing, and I didn't rate her, didn't believe her. The whole series was crap. Might try the other one she's in after reading comments here.

I love KH and SJ. Though currently watching Vigil with SJ and the show stealer is Rose Leslie who is utterly gorgeous and such a natural actor.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/02/2022 12:13

@0pheliaBaIIs

The more we see of successful, talented women the better, imo.
There are probably more than 2 two talented women though. How about giving someone else a chance. Olivia Coleman is also great, but seems to be in so many things...
Didyousaynutella · 21/02/2022 12:17

David Attenborough. I know he’s a national treasure and all that but he’s a bit selfish for not letting the next goodness knows how many generations take his place.

Staffy1 · 21/02/2022 12:35

I thought Anna Madeley from All creatures great and small was Keeley Hawes. There are a few that look similar.
I love Sheridan Smith, she is a marvellous actress.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 21/02/2022 12:43

what about Clare Balding,
anyone want to comment on her?
Wink
sports/olympics whatever, bring in clare

i have no issues, i like clare personally

CatJumperTwat · 21/02/2022 12:46

I find Clare Balding inoffensive but really dull. Then again, even Keeley Hawes probably couldn't make sport interesting.

MrsToothyBitch · 21/02/2022 13:26

@IntermittentParps

I think Siobhan Finneran is fantastically good.
Skill wise, I don't deny it. I think she gives subtle, nuanced performances in many ways but at the same time, in terms of her facial expressions I've more or less only ever seen her pulling a face like a sulky sullen child who hates their birthday present and it seems to be her only expression. I find her having a cob on distracting and irritating and she seems to specialise in tragedy... and I find her hard to warm to or empathise with because she comes across as petulant rather than bruised and sad. The more I think about it, the more I think she also reminds me of someone (a slim brunette woman ) from my childhood who was incredibly damaging to me- for being overly harsh and never satisfied- so I think I just have an instinctive unfortunate aversion to her. They even have a similar vocal timbre. I'm sorry Siobhan!

I think I've also seen her playing at least a couple of roles where I didn't take to the character either (based on the actions and speech of the part, not necessarily just her in it) so that might partly be it, too.

By contrast I know my mum finds Morven Christie irritating... I quite like her.

BadHairDayExpert · 21/02/2022 13:52

Have not seen KH in anything since It's a sin and she was tremendous in that.
SS was in a godawful dog grooming show and is now a judge in Starstruck, which is stars in your eyes, the team version.
I assumed she needed the money, new baby etc as theatre work less stable.

It’s very true Grin

Steph McGovern is another one who gets wheeled out every time they want a ‘gritty Northern perspective’. Nothing against her, I just don’t quite understand her popularity.

Steppedonalego · 21/02/2022 13:56

@Dontfuckingsaycheese

Also amazing (ly vile) in It’s a Sin. I’ve loved SS since the Royle Family with her wafer-thin ham Barbara 😉
I thought Barbara was played by Sue Johnston? A superb actor. I also really rate Lesley Sharpe.
Elderflower14 · 21/02/2022 13:58

Richard Ayoade seems to pop up regularly too!!

IntermittentParps · 21/02/2022 14:31

MrsToothyBitch I do think she's a bit typecast as, in short, 'miserable'!
I love her in Happy Valley because, although this is the case, she does get to do some jokes and light-heartedness. Not much, I admit Grin

DaphneSprucesPippasClack · 21/02/2022 14:43

I won't watch Sheridan stuff. I honestly think she's a crap actor...

There's another series of Happy Valley coming. I'm looking forward to seeing that.
IntermittentParps · 21/02/2022 14:47

Classica, yes, I just learned that from this thread. SO exciting Smile

latetothefisting · 21/02/2022 14:55

@IntermittentParps if BC went to a private prep school, then a) obviously this vastly enhanced his chances of getting a scholarship, and b) even if he hadn't got the scholarship someone whose parents can pay for private prep aren't then going to send their kid to the local comp - he would still have gone to a private school, just possibly one with slightly less name recognition. Appreciate your point re: he gets picked on whereas other actors with a similar background don't seem to be typecast in the same way - but don't think he's a good example of 'and he isn't even that posh!'

@lollipoprainbow - agree re: vicky mcclure, no idea why she agreed to play exactly the same character as Kate in LoD in the new show.

I've no idea what his parents' plans or options were for if he didn't get the scholarship, so I don't think that's a point to answer.

He has also talked about how, at school, he was considered to be basically the proletariat compared to the nobility and oligarchs' sons he mixed with. I never said he wasn't privileged, but it is a scale and it's all relative.

And I certainly didn't say he wasn't even that posh.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/02/2022 15:00

Just to say I saw Sheridan Smith in West End- Ibsen's Hedda Gabler about 10 years ago and she was amazing.

Mesmerising stage presence in what is considered one of the great dramatic roles in theatre.
So obviously a very different outlet than some of her tv roles-

It was a works event for DH so we actually got to meet the cast after and she was charming and spent ages chatting to people.

I admit to not seeing her on much/maybe anything on telly since Two pints of lager days but think she is very talented even if some of the vehicles she is in may not showcase her well.

Inchail · 21/02/2022 15:03

I don't rate SS at all - AT ALL!

But KH as Lindsay Denton was one of the best performances I've ever seen anywhere in anything. All hail KH

TheRealBoswell · 21/02/2022 15:03

I’m sure there are plenty of channels that she is not on Xmas Confused

1forAll74 · 21/02/2022 15:39

I like both these ladies, they get the jobs, because they are both popular, and talented, It can't be doing with Phil and Holly, who seem to be in everything, as in their morning show, other types of shows, and on some adverts too, Will they ever go away!
