Sheridan Smith & Keeley Hawes

Anyone else just fed up of seeing their faces? I don’t hate either of them & Sheridan in particular is extremely talented ..you can’t blame them either for taking all the work offered to them. But my lord they seem to be in bloody everything to the point i’m starting to avoid anything they are in.

(There must be male equivalents equally over exposed and ubiquitous but names are escaping me right now!)

Love Keeley.
SS doesn't seem to appear in shows which appeal to me so the only thing I've ever seen her in is Funny Girl, which was excellent.

MotherOfWhippets · 21/02/2022 09:18

Agree. Getting bored of SS now. I've never been particularly keen - although I think she has played a good part in certain things - but by god she is in EVERYTHING at the moment.

KellyanneConway · 21/02/2022 09:21

YABU there aren't many working class people doing well in acting/ the arts these days and the more frequently they are on our screens the better as far as I am concerned. I am sick of seeing the massively ubiquitous privileged usual suspects who are always all over TV, including the news. Benedict Cumberbatch who is also all over the big screen is a good example.

IntermittentParps · 21/02/2022 09:22

southeastdweller, really!?!? Yay!

Iamthewombat · 21/02/2022 09:22

does seem a little typecast as eternal "Northern lass,WC mum roles

(From a PP, re Sheridan Smith)

Agreed. I know,with a depressing sense of inevitability, that if there’s a ‘gritty northern bird’ role, SS will be cast. It’s getting boring.

I think it’s because there aren’t many ‘gritty northern bird’ actresses in her age bracket. Slightly older and you’ve got Lesley Sharp, Siobhan Finneran and yes, Sarah Lancashire, who all do that sort of thing better, but they are that bit older.

I know it's ridiculous, but after watching 4 Lives and then The Teacher, I turned down No Return because Sheridan is in it. Petty, nothing against her, just didn't want to see her AGAIN
IntermittentParps · 21/02/2022 09:23

@BoodleBug51

I just can't warm to either, they both seem to be very limited in their acting skills/facial expressions which makes anything they're in very predictable. Same with Sarah Lancashire and Suranne Jones.

They've all got very good agents Hmm

The other three I don't massively disagree with (although Keeley H was terrific in It's a Sin). But I HAVE to take issue with that comment in regard to Sarah Lancashire. She's an exceptional actor. Her performance in Happy Valley particularly is jaw-dropping.
thebellagio · 21/02/2022 09:24

For me, the person who is never ever off the telly is Maya Jama. I don't mind her but me and my husband have a long running joke that she's literally everywhere, on every single channel! She must have a cracking agent!

MsFannySqueers · 21/02/2022 09:25

@BowerOfBramble I can highly recommend Aneka. I really like Nicola Walker in it, good plots, great scenery all in all just a bit different.

Gonnagetgoing · 21/02/2022 09:25

I get confused between Keeley Hawes and Suranne Jones Hmm?!

Sheridan is good in some things but she irritates me in others and her life off screen.

Which one out of Keeley and Suranne was in the affair drama series on BBC?

whynotwhatknot · 21/02/2022 09:25

i cannot stand keeley hawes i dont know what it is i think she overacts in everything

i had to force myself to watch ashes to ashes because i love gene hunt

Elderflower14 · 21/02/2022 09:27

They seem to be trying to shoehorn Richie the travel guy on Ken Bruce's radio show into a lot of things at the moment too. He's been on Celeb Mastermind and The Weakest Link off the top of my head!

1AngelicFruitCake · 21/02/2022 09:28

I love Nicola Walker and Siobhan Finneran

Kbyodjs · 21/02/2022 09:28

I just find that Sheridan smith plays the same character now; I used to enjoy her in things but now I feel like I know exactly how it’s going to go whereas Kelley hawes has more of a range

SpiderVersed · 21/02/2022 09:29

Keeley Hawes is bloody marvellous.

And no, I’m not sick of seeing her or the other brilliant actresses getting leading roles. Ruth Wilson, Suranne Jones, Sophie Okenedo, Nicola Walker, Nina Sosanya, Sarah Lancashire, Anne Reid etc are a guarantee of quality.

Why knock a woman down rather than celebrate how talented she is?

Gonnagetgoing · 21/02/2022 09:29

@SirChenjins

YY to Sheridan Smith - I think she's vastly over-rated and Rob Beckett/Romesh Ranganathan seem to be everywhere at the moment. I don't mind KH, she's a really good actor. The one that annoys me most though is Lily James - a completely one-dimensional actor whose entire career seems to have been built solely on staring into the middle distance, crying, or grinning inanely.
@SirChenjins - Sheridan is good in certain projects but by god does she know it! She can sing (due to family talent). Wasn't there some drama over revealing her baby's face too (totally up to her of course but...)?

She was, however, excellent in The Twelve Days of Christine.

I saw Lily James in Pammy and Tommy and yes, she is very forgettable.

0pheliaBaIIs · 21/02/2022 09:30

I remember when Keeley Hawes was in a Suede video at the start of her career and I had a massive crush on her. She was fabulous in Tipping the Velvet too, way back in the mists of time.

When she plays middle aged mothers (brilliantly!) now it always brings me up short because I still think if her as the girl in the Suede video, and surely she can't be old enough to be a middle aged mum. Until I remember that I'm a middle aged mum myself now and yes, 25 years have gone by!

Gonnagetgoing · 21/02/2022 09:31

@1AngelicFruitCake

I love Nicola Walker and Siobhan Finneran
@1AngelicFruitCake - see, to me, I don't recognise half the actresses here because they're either forgettable due to the roles they get or they're overexposed etc.

Disclaimer - brother works in film and TV - wonder what he'd say about this?

Benedict Cumberbatch is often chosen as a whipping boy for this sort of discussion and it's not very fair. Sure, he went to a private prep school but he went to Harrow because he got a scholarship. He's spoken in interviews about how he finds it hard getting cast to play anyone below his own social class, which must be frustrating for an actor. He's very outspoken about social issues and uses his profile for raising awareness in a very admirable way, IMO. Other popular actors who went to private school seem to be given a pass on this (Rebecca Hall, Tom Hardy, Olivia Colman...) I don't disagree that more diversity would be a good thing, but picking on individuals – and the same individuals over and over again – is just a bit tired.
Pyri · 21/02/2022 09:34

Yes to Benedict Cumberbatch. Martin Freeman is another who is absolutely everywhere and I suspect is a total arse in real life

IntermittentParps · 21/02/2022 09:34

Anne Reid is fecking brilliant isn't she?! I love Nicola Walker and Nina Sosanya too. It's about time women had higher profiles.
Bipbopbee · 21/02/2022 09:35

YABU
Keeley Hawes in particular was superb in Its a Sin

T00Ts · 21/02/2022 09:35

@LemonViolet

Are you mixing up Keeley Hawes with Suranne Jones OP?

Anyway. They’re all brilliant actors and fair play to them doing well. You don’t have to watch telly you know Grin

I came to say exactly this.
Bagelsandbrie · 21/02/2022 09:36

I never used to like Benedict C until I saw him as Dr Strange in the new Spider-Man film. My ds aged 9 who has autism and generally isn’t ever bothered about films absolutely loved him! He found his character so funny and really latched on to the story, when we got home he watched the Dr Strange film and really enjoyed it. So now I’m a fan. I think he gets a lot of hate but I don’t really know why.

lollipoprainbow · 21/02/2022 09:37
