It's not too bad where I am. I'm more concerned for my DP who is a haulage driver and is out in it. I keep checking the area he's going to and the wind seems to be getting stronger and stronger each time

BABAHOTEL · 18/02/2022 16:00

@Bitofachinwag

That last tree looks very dangerous BABA! Could fall down any second.
I know, what's the chances of getting anyone out to that any time soon?

But it's all media hype don't you know,

This is an interesting read re wind speed records. You’re right, it’s as bad as the media made it out to be if it’s breaking records!

Dd(6) is on half term anyway but I could well imagine some of these gusts are capable of knocking her off her feet. We walk about a mile on very narrow paths and I wouldn’t fancy doing it in this.

MrsTrumpton · 18/02/2022 16:07

Just seen London Fire Brigade has classified the storm as a major incident because it is overwhelmed by calls from people needing help.

But I'm guessing that's just them and the public falling for media hype too? Hmm

It's London so it's all media hype. Bloody soft southerners causing a fuss.

Must be, because this morning it wasn't windy and even though it was always predicted for later in the day, certain posters have decided it was hype! Not media hype round here! A good MET office prediction though.
MrsTrumpton · 18/02/2022 16:09

Meanwhile, Network Rail for Kent and Sussex has put out this list of lines currently blocked by debris/fallen trees. Did the media put them all there, I wonder?!

Seriously people, stop with the 'it's no big deal, it's just hype' narrative. It's clearly anything but!

Where is this storm then?

Yep.

122mph earlier on down here earlier in our local press with a further update just now of 125.4mph.

It is an area that’s super exposed, but I’m just along the coast and it’s been bad enough

MrsTrumpton · 18/02/2022 16:11

BABAHOTEL Exactly! And you just know those same posters would be up in arms if the Met Office had downplayed it and said 'oh, it'll just be a bit blowy'. Hmm

Hope he's ok. DH works with hauliers, they're also working today. Bloody brave! x
Nidan2Sandan · 18/02/2022 16:18

DH is emergency services and just been put on a 24 hour shift (police) and already dealt with one storm related near fatality (and could still become a fatality) so safe to say it isnt an over the top reaction from the media.

Wind is still gusting massively here, although gaps between gusts have increased. My fence is still hanging by a thread.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 18/02/2022 16:27

@DollyDingleberry

Im also in Stoke (well, Leek way) and it's howling here. The rain isn't the problem it's the wind - I'm in our loft bedroom so I don't know if it just sounds worse, but next door have lost their garden furniture over the back wall and onto the main road.
I'm in Newcastle. It was fine earlier but I went to try and stop my bin lid banging earlier and it blew my glasses off my face 🤣

Those posters seem to have disappeared now, perhaps they've been blown away? 💨 💨 😂

Hmm

Salt and vinegar, or ketchup with your chips? (on shoulder).

Tealightsandd · 18/02/2022 16:32

Btw as it's (non pitchfork waving if a non local comes by) London, there's plenty of northerners living there.

I think that was said in humour?
Tealightsandd · 18/02/2022 16:34

As for over or under blowing, nobody wants to be the next Michael Fish.

Tealightsandd · 18/02/2022 16:37

BABAHOTEL Oh I missed the humour sorryBlush I'm also hungry and craving a large bag of big fat greasy chips.

Grilledaubergines · 18/02/2022 16:38

Surrey here and so far today I’ve lost 2 fence panels, 3 trees in my garden have uprooted and my garden table has done somersault across the garden, smashing the glass. There are trees down everywhere and lots of roads closed.

Can I share those! You've now given me a craving! No vinegar though, that's the food of the devil.
Tealightsandd · 18/02/2022 16:39

You're welcome to share (I'll have the bits with the vinegar) Smile
