PickAChew, no I dont think they are being dismissive.

Oblomov22 · 18/02/2022 15:16

And yes there are certainly bad bits. No one wants fallen trees. No one wants fatalities. But its certainly not, so FAR, as bad as the media made it out to be.

Mollysocks · 18/02/2022 15:17

@Girliefriendlikespuppies

I'm in Somerset, it's been windy but otherwise a nice day with a fair bit of sunshine. We've definitely had it a lot worse over the winter and there were no weather warnings, school closures etc 🤷‍♀️
Somersets a big county. A church spire snapped off in Somerset so think it’s more than a bit windy in some parts 🤣
CantChatNow · 18/02/2022 15:18

I’m in the southwest and some of our chimney is gone. Tbh I feel quite lucky as it seems pretty calm now. I hope everyone stays safe Flowers

It could have been a lot worse without the medias warning for people to stay inside and limit travelling.
Onairjunkie · 18/02/2022 15:22

Injured horse is ok. Stressed, sweating and lame but I think it’s muscular, or at least soft tissue. He’s warm in his shoulder. I think he’s come down on it during a mad gallop (the fields are totally churned up) or crashed onto a fence post. Poor boy. He’s rugged up with hay and he has a lad (I call them my lads but they’re the guys that work for me on my farm. It’s an affectionate term. They’re not my sons, my son is a toddler and currently playing with some Duplo!) is with him. Vet has been notified and may pop out later to do a blanket check on various livestock.

We’ve lost more sheet metal from the barn but it’s wedged itself somewhere so we’re leaving it be for the moment.

Cows have spread into the second field courtesy of the collapsed wall but we’ve secured that so they should be ok.

When it dies down the plan is to patch the barn, bring all horses in for the night (I might bed down in the corner of my boy’s box for the night if it doesn’t completely calm down so I can listen out for them). Might bring the cows in too.

I like having a plan and would feel happier with them all inside but only if the wind fucks off. We’ve lost a ton of trees too. 😥

CounsellorTroi · 18/02/2022 15:24

I’m glad the horse is OK

Wagsandclaws · 18/02/2022 15:25

It was gusting so we could barely stand up where we live in Somerset. Granted we live at the top of a big hill in the mendips but it was like wind I've never experienced.

20 mins from me the spire blew off st cuthberts church in Wells so it was pretty bad in this particular part of Somerset.

Onairjunkie · 18/02/2022 15:28

We’re hilltop too, @Wagsandclaws and we’re getting hammered. Stay safe.

BABAHOTEL · 18/02/2022 15:29

@GirlInACountrySong

Met office had it right as far as I'm concerned! See photos from very short dog walk.

It's the highest wind speed ever recorded in the UK.

Wagsandclaws · 18/02/2022 15:34

You too @Onairjunkie. I'm so glad your ned is ok. Yes bring them in and I hope the rest of your animals are all ok. Sorry to read about your barn and wall.

My little darlings broke out of their paddock - the fence blew down and they made their way into the garden. ( and ate my f*cking newly plated apple trees ) couldn't catch them as too spooky - but they are safely back where they belong now.

Where is this storm then?
Bitofachinwag · 18/02/2022 15:34

That last tree looks very dangerous BABA! Could fall down any second.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/02/2022 15:34

@Onairjunkie glad your horse is ok.

Now on amber warning, its the gusts of wind that are bad.

pigsDOfly · 18/02/2022 15:37

The very strong gusts are getting a bit further apart here (East Sussex) and birds are beginning to appear in the garden.

I keep thinking it's beginning to calm down but then it starts up again just as strong.

All our trains have been cancelled, schools closed and our bin men had to abandon their round earlier.

Onairjunkie Glad to hear your horse is okay. Sounds as if you're having a really rough time.

Cornettoninja · 18/02/2022 15:40

@Wagsandclaws your opportunistic horses made me smile Grin

(Sorry that your apple trees had to be sacrificed for it though!)

Suzi888 · 18/02/2022 15:42

@Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious I really don’t think they are.
But you’ve clearly made up your mind so 🤷🏼‍♀️….

Onairjunkie · 18/02/2022 15:43

Ah love them. What are they? They look good and hearty. And remarkably happy with themselves.

Mine is my old boy. Big ID. He probably would have been daft just to keep up with the young kids and to fit in. He’s so unflappable usually. And now the poor old thing is stuck inside. He’s pretty happy though. Weight bearing. With hay. And a stable rug. If it wasn’t hot, I’d wonder if he was faking it.

The gusts are what are doing us now. They whip up out of nowhere and it’s that which is tearing bits off I think.

I do. And you've clearly made yours up so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fedupsotired · 18/02/2022 15:49

You are right you can't argue with stupid.

Someone complaining on this thread early on that schools were shut, I'm very glad as although getting to school would be fine it's an absolute nightmare now. I know of a school where a tree has fallen in the playground but of course closing schools wasn't necessary 🙄.

I think the fact the storm has hit a bit later seems to have pissed people off (or made them comment and look ridiculous). Odd how some can't think forward about what might happen.

SoupDragon · 18/02/2022 15:50

@Suzi888

“People are recording how the weather is at the moment. I’m sure most expect it to worsen. That’s the point of this thread.”

I haven’t seen any poster mocking another posters experiences. I wouldn’t wish any harm on anyone else.

Of course there are people mocking others. WhenIHadYou and HufflepuffPride are two of them for example.

Presumably because the vast majority of the public heeded the warnings published in the media and stayed indoors and not travelled?

@Oblomov22

Don't you mean as bad as the Met Office made it out to be?

(Although I disagree)

Worst storm warning from Met Office in 30 years, what do you think the media should have said?

BatshitCrazyWoman · 18/02/2022 15:55

@RobertaFirmino

One positive for me in all this - it's a bloody good drying day! All the towels were bone dry within an hour!
Fuck knows where any washing I put on the line would end up. My neighbour's children's football goal has just flown by 😕
