Ryan Reynolds

I am so bored today, so I was chatting about film recommendations with someone. I love action films, and a few with Ryan Reynolds were mentioned, and he seems to pop up in a load of them just now. AIBU to think Ryan Reynolds is a terrible actor? I can’t stand him, and he acts like he is playing the same character in every film, and his voice is intensely irritating. He ruins every film he’s in, and I don’t know why he annoys me so much, but I just don’t get why he’s so popular. He gives me the ick. Is it just me?

@boringaccountant

Ryan Reynolds basically plays himself in every film. EXCEPT.. Buried. I loved him in that film and was hugely surprised. I really would recommend it.
OMG. He was buried? What twat dug him up?!!
APurpleSquirrel · 17/02/2022 14:36

YABU - love most of his films & the characters he plays, yes they're similar but that's clearly because a) he enjoys playing them (often helping write them too), b) other people/film makers cast him to play those roles& c) as they're popular they make money & he is in demand.
Many actors carve a niche for themselves; some like that, others don't & want to stretch themselves.
Personally I really enjoy his friendship with Hugh Jackman too & he seems like a really nice guy.

blackdumpling · 17/02/2022 14:37

I agree that Ryan Reynolds isn't a good actor

There is something about him I don't like

Something to do with his beady eyes & bland roles

Scianel · 17/02/2022 14:38

Agree with you OP, luckily I don't tend to like the sort of films he graces with his presence.
And hard disagree on the "handsome".

HufflepuffPride · 17/02/2022 14:42

He owns my local football team!

mam0918 · 17/02/2022 14:44

He does majoratively play the same character now because he has found one that works and is very popular but not always.

Try watching 'Buried' - he plays a trucker in the middle east who is kidnapped by terrorists and buried alive for a ransom. The entire film is set in the coffin he is buried in with just a phone to attempt to call his family and get help... not a funny film so definitely not his common dark dry humor.

SunnySideDownBriefly · 17/02/2022 14:45

I can't believe people fall for the public persona of this guy. It doesn't take much to dig up the dirt. He's a dog.

MondayYogurt · 17/02/2022 14:48

@Amortentia I went to an early festival screening of Lala land where Gosling did an intro clip with Emma Stone and he was so, so disrespectfully rude. You could tell he had no interest in being pleasant for even 60 seconds. Emma couldn't make up for it. Awkward.

Whereas I feel Reynolds would just do the intro, no drama. Probably make some jokes too.

Oooooh spill the beans
Soubriquet · 17/02/2022 14:51

I like him

He and his wife both have a fantastic sense of humour and I love the films he’s in

mam0918 · 17/02/2022 14:51

@BorderlineHappy

I love him but out of the 2 Blake is a much better actor. She's fantastic in The Shallows.

Plus Red Notice was crap,3 stars that don't take themselves too seriously.
It should have been a hoot bit it was bogged down in waffle and not enough action.

This just shows how different we all are, I found the Shallows the most hilariously terrible film I ever saw.

The idea of the story could have been great but Jesus its so badly writen it make 'Jaws the revenge' and 'Piranah 2 the spawning' seem masterful.

veevee04 · 17/02/2022 14:54

He's fit as fuck so YABU Blush

veevee04 · 17/02/2022 14:55

I do like Ryan gosling better though I definitely wouldn't kick him out of bed..

Flowersandbread · 17/02/2022 14:58

Yes! Yanbu op. I was just saying this to my dh the other night. He did q film with the rock and gal gadot recently and nearly ruined it. His character would have been better serious. He does always play the same lame character

I like him in real life though, just nothing film. I don't like actors who are overly or in your face funny

SamphiretheStickerist · 17/02/2022 14:59
@SamphiretheStickerist Actually, I love Michael Caine and think he's underrated. He is great in the Man who would be King, Deathtrap, Educating Rita and Dirty, rotten scoundrels.
Yep.

And balance those, and Alfie, Get Carter etc against Attack of the Killer Bees and all you ever get is Michael Caine.

Ask me how I know what he is like in real life and I will tell you of the couple of weeks I spent literally bumping into him around Montpellier, he was filming, don't ask me what, I just remember how big, solid and perfectly lovely he was 🙃

SamphiretheStickerist · 17/02/2022 15:00

The Whistle Blower. Of course I remembered, just as I reached for Google.

spacehardware · 17/02/2022 15:03

"Like if they made a handsome american actor by committee."

Agree but isn't he Canadian?

Dreamingof3 · 17/02/2022 15:05

The Voices is his best film by far 👌

herecomesthsun · 17/02/2022 15:08

@nudelip

I've only seen him in Deadpool and that Netflix thing with the rock. Both of which were pretty crap. However, he's made my husband and three out of four DC incredibly happy by buying our local football team so I like him! COYR ⚽️
yes, what a hero!
SilverSplitsTheBlue · 17/02/2022 15:11

I don't think Alanis Morrisette or Scarlett Johansson are fans...

BoredZelda · 17/02/2022 15:21

I love him. He’s found a role that suits him and it’s usually fun to watch.

Plenty of other actors play the same role no matter what they are in. Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Jen Anniston to name a few.

What about Sean Connery, even kept his Scottish accent as the skipper of a Russian submarine and (other) people still consider him a great actor.

balalake · 17/02/2022 15:38

A hero in Wrexham, regardless of his acting talent!

Pyri · 17/02/2022 15:39

I had no idea he went out with alanis!!!
LargeInCharge · 17/02/2022 15:43

I like him. He’s easy on the eye too.

ancientgran · 17/02/2022 15:45

@Minikievs

I feel exactly the same! EVERY character he plays is the same! Even his Insta/Twitter persona is the same, which makes me think he's not even an actor, he just plays himself annoying twat all the time
He wouldn't be the only one to do that. I'm not that up to date with the modern crop of actors but thinking back there were a fair few who were always themselves.
