To hate my lounge carpet? Honest opinions on my lounge carpet that was laid yesterday

We wanted something neutral but practical as we have two dogs. So we chose this one which was laid yesterday. Because its two tone it looks totally different in my lounge than it did in the showroom! We even took a small sample home!

My heart sank when the fitters left. It looks like it can't decide what colour it is..it's a kind of mink at night and during the day it has a silver/grey look to it. We had the same carpet laid in our bedroom which looks stunning as our bedroom is a champagne/ dark brown theme. But in the lounge against the pastel colours of the ottoman and mauve curtains I just don't know what to think. Honest opinions please and also some ideas on tweaks on what I can do?

I like the colour, I think it's the pile that's the issue, (i had one very similar) it looks great for the first few months then when the pile flattens the colour differences appear less. (TBH I changed my carpet at christmas to a lesser pile) Maybe a lovely rug in the middle of the living room will make a difference

WeAreTheHeroes · 04/02/2022 12:54

@GreenFingersWouldBeHandy

You chose it. You took a sample home and you paid for it.

What are you actually moaning about?

Well if you read the OP you'll see what her concerns are.

I've done something similar with paint. Bought a tester, tried it in several places in the room then found that when it was on every wall at certain times of the day it looked a completely different, unwanted colour.

That said I think the carpet looks good in your living room.

Jjones8 · 04/02/2022 12:54

Hopefully you will get used to it and end up liking it! Your dogs look super lovely. I think the long and short of is that it’s made of polyester and so you’ll always get that sort of sheen to it. You can always work with your furniture / accessories to complement the colour. Would recommend spending a bit more to get a wool blend in future.

HabitsDieHard · 04/02/2022 12:57

I love it!

Gonnagetgoing · 04/02/2022 12:58

@Kitsmummy

I also hate it! It looks like a patterned granny carpet.

Can you take it up and put it down in a different room where it might look I like it does upstairs?

@Kitsmummy - I'm the same as you - reminds me of something my nana had too sorry nana!

Add fluffy white rug and change curtains etc as @NoSquirrels said

Having seen the second lot of photos, I think the problem is actually the lighting. It's so warm that it distorts the colours in the different pieces and makes them clash.

@ChaosMoon - actually I agree - in the landscape last photo it looks much better actually!

Therefore I'd rethink the lighting maybe.

Gorgeous dogs btw!

Carpet? What carpet??

What an adorable pair!! ❤️

It looks better in your second set of photos. Given you love it in your bedroom I'm sure you can love it in your lounge!

I'd get a throw to cover a chunk of the sofa and another to cover the ottoman. Keep in mind the colours in your bedroom & try to replicate those.

You're not supposed to hoover new carpet, you're supposed to let it settle. I'd get a soft rubber broom and go out it lightly in one direction. Walk on it a lot & hope it looks less 'busy' when it settles.

Failing all else, could you get it out in other rooms, as you like it in your bedroom?

Or sell it to one of the posters who love it!
Alternative keep your digs in there & no one will notice the carpet!!

MizzFizz · 04/02/2022 13:04

Your rug is a cool tone while your furniture is all warm tones... so they do clash a bit. But the carpet is lovely.... Would you consider reupholstering the ottoman to more cool shades?

Cantleave · 04/02/2022 13:04

Really difficult to judge the colour, as (you are right) the colour looks different depending on the light. From your photo, the Ottoman looks awful against it, but the Couch is okay. Not fantastic, but okay!

I don’t know if a rug would help as that would be another colour added to the mix. I really think the patterned Ottoman is the main issue, as it adds too many colours that don’t really go together. Perhaps take it out of the room and see how things looks then?

Gonnagetgoing · 04/02/2022 13:04

I'm slightly Hmm that having the same carpet in your bedroom you didn't think about how it would look in the lounge or not much.

SalsaLove · 04/02/2022 13:05

@ChittyBangs

I like it. Just change colour of your curtains and cushions to something neutral or deeper
I agree with this. It’s not the carpet, it’s the curtains and cushions throwing it all off. And other than the carpet you’ve got no texture in the room, but can easily fix that with textured cushions (get large ones, yours are too small).
pilates · 04/02/2022 13:10

Sorry I don’t like it but love the dogs

TatianaBis · 04/02/2022 13:12

No - the curtains, cushions, ottomon were fine before the carpet came along, ergo the carpet is the problem.

But a big rug will resolve that relatively cheaply.

Jux · 04/02/2022 13:12

Well I think you'll get used to it v quickly.

We're looking for a sitting room carpet too, as ours was ruined in a flood. I'm just sick of neutrals. I want somethine green, or blue or even purple. Not pastel, proper colour! Can I find a decent wool carpet that's also a decent colour? No. I can't.

bcc89 · 04/02/2022 13:13

I LOVE it. I looks really deep and soft!

They're adorable but they don't appear to like the carpet Grin
WeAreTheHeroes · 04/02/2022 13:17

Sorry but it's a myth you shouldn't hoover newly fitted carpet.

Try the remaining traditional carpet makers like Axminster for coloured carpet - not sure if they do plain, solid colours though. As someone who bought a house with several plain, solid colour carpets I would warm against them. They show every hair, bit of fluff, etc.

Buttermuffin · 04/02/2022 13:18

I like it.

Cissyandflora · 04/02/2022 13:19

I would just enjoy it. You’ll come to be happy with it because you like it in the bedroom. You could change other things like curtains if you want but I don’t think you need. Looks expensive.

giveyou2reasons · 04/02/2022 13:21

It does look better in the newer photos. You'll get used to it. Make small, cheap changes, if you think it might help, as pp have suggested, but I think it will blend in, once you're used to it. It's not a bold colour that stands out, and most people wouldn't think twice about it, if it wasn't obviously new.

ComeOnSpringtime · 04/02/2022 13:21

I've seen the second photo. The carpet goes with the armchair, curtains and matching cushions. It's okay with the sofa and TV stand.

It doesn't go with the wall paint and ottoman.

The bedroom and lounge were fitted at the same time yesterday

MaChienEstUnDick · 04/02/2022 13:22

It will flatten a little as it settles - it's because the pile is so bouncy that the different shades are so strong. We got a new carpet 6 weeks ago, I had exactly the same wobble and it's totally fine now.

Overandout1 · 04/02/2022 13:27

I know what you mean OP. I think the Capet itself is a nice colour and goes well in the living room. It's just the fact it looks like it's been hoovered in different directions. Mine does this (but very minimally) and I keep thinking I have a mark on the carpet. Yours is much nicer though.
