@sadpapercourtesan

Nadine Dorries going full Elaine Figgis was priceless Grin

"I've been a Boris Johnson supporter for twelve years now"

I don't know whether to be sad or glad that I missed this.
Peregrina · 31/01/2022 17:55

But they wouldn't have been able to jab anyone had the government not taken an enormous gamble and placed huge orders for vaccines that were still under development.

He got lucky. He managed to find someone competent to put in charge of procurement. If it had been Dido Harding, we'd still be waiting.

Sunshinedreaming2022 · 31/01/2022 18:03

I’m quite happy for him to cling on for the next year whilst the police investigate, digging himself into bigger and bigger holes. By the. It will be fresh enough in everyone’s minds for the next general election and deters enough people from voting Tory

DuncinToffee · 31/01/2022 18:04

BBC now reporting

The PM's official spokesman has released a statement, with what appears to be a change of mind.

During his Commons statement earlier, Boris Johnson resisted calls - including from his own MPs - for him to promise to publish Gray's full report, once the police have finished their investigation.

Now his spokesman says: "At the end of the process, the prime minister will ask Sue Gray to update her work in light of what is found.

"He will publish that update."

The spokesman adds: "The prime minister is clear we must not judge an ongoing investigation and his focus now is on addressing the general findings.”

A reminder: The Met Police said today their investigation would not take more than a year, but did not give an exact timeframe for when it would wrap up.

megletthesecond · 31/01/2022 18:09

I know who Elaine Figgis is now Grin.

She SO was.

Notonthestairs · 31/01/2022 18:10

That announcement is because he realised letters were going to mount up otherwise.

Alexandra2001 · 31/01/2022 18:15

@Florianus

ClaudineClare: Is Johnson about to face a criminal trial?

Hardly, the Met are only dealing with Fixed Penalty Fines in relation to Partygate and FPNs are not a criminal matter (unless the person concerned refuses to pay the fine, of course).

So why all the nonsense about curtailing her report?

There is no legal reason whatsoever for her not to release her full report... unless Downing street and the Met and even Ms Gray are in cahoots.

jgw1 · 31/01/2022 18:16

I missed Boris' performance this afternoon. I take it from the comments on here that he was absolutely at the top of his game and hugely persuasive.

Why is he so intent on destroying the Tory party?

Notonthestairs · 31/01/2022 18:16

I've just looked up Elaine Figgis - spot on 😂

Puzzledandpissedoff · 31/01/2022 18:17

What does he think the police are going to say that could POSSIBLY get him off the hook??!!

Anything Boris wants them to, since the government's paying for them

Let's not pretend the Met are going to do anyhing like a real investigation, or that they've "swooped in". Most likely they've been brought in, because that offers the best chance for Boris to say "I can't comment"

LittleBearPad · 31/01/2022 18:19

@CryingAtTheDiscotheque

Is Nadir Dorries drunk?
He’s contemptible.

Hopefully the 1922 committee will do their job

Alexandra2001 · 31/01/2022 18:19

@derxa

I should imagine Putin would be mystified as to why 'parties' are being investigated at all

I'd hope that decent Tories like yourself would expect rather higher standards from Boris Johnson than we have come to expect from Mr Putin, though i do expect BJ would like to see the back of a few journalists himself, so maybe that is what he will be discussing with the Russian President.

Because he only cares about himself.

Did you hear the two Tory local party chairpersons on R4's PM ? its not just BJ who is intent on changing the Tory party for the worse.

That would answer your question.

ENoeuf · 31/01/2022 18:25

And now Javid’s distracting announcement

I'm not over keen on BJ and my heart sank when he was elected leader. I wish he would just go gracefully. I'm a bit sick of MPs holding onions to their eyes and trotting out sob stories. Nauseating.

Halsall · 31/01/2022 18:29

@Florianus

Thanks for the new thread, Rhino.

One thing puzzled me about the part of the SG report released today. It says, in the appendix, that one of her appointed tasks was to report on attendance at the various events, but she has not done so - even in the case of the four events that the Met are not investigating. Perhaps the police insisted that no names were mentioned, whatever the event.

Incidentally, anyone wanting to see what SG finally submitted can find the document at www.gov.uk - enter "Sue Gray" in the search box, and it is the first thing to come up (a rather slim PDF of 6 pages, excluding the introductory material and annexes).

Florianus my understanding was that she won't report until she can release her full findings. She does say she's been asked to 'retain' all the information gathered in the investigation and she won't hand over any of the conclusions she is allowed to draw to Johnson and his cronies - I will not be circulating the information internally within government, it has been provided in confidence to the Cabinet Office investigation team and it is important that this confidence is maintained to protect the integrity of the process

Doesn't TRUST Johnson, perhaps? Surely not!

One of the comments on Twitter I read today was that in Civil Service-speak - like judge-speak - her phrasing, studiedly polite though it may have been, was utterly damning of Johnson.

Yes he is doing sterling work for the independence movement in Scotland and for farmers all over the UK, most of the ones i know really hate him know.
Personally i could tell everyone some quite heart breaking stories but these things are best spoken of in general terms or not at all.

You thought Aaron Bell talking about his grandmother’s funeral was nauseating?

Really?

AdamRyan · 31/01/2022 18:37

I can't believe it's going to take up to a year to issue some fpns Confused
Really hoping it's something more serious. And in the meantime the Conservatives pull their finger out and get rid

Livingtothefull · 31/01/2022 18:38

'The fact they had a party in aid of ousting Cummings says quite a lot about him and his wife. Not only a party, but one for getting rid of an aide. Is that normal in a workplace?'

No it is not normal in any normal workplace. Most workplaces would not tolerate parties like those as they would be evidence of a bullying, toxic work culture. I agree that it says a lot about the kind of person Johnson is.

I thought it was pretty damning.

And Carrie Johnson too.

Can you imagine Samantha Cameron doing the same, or Sarah Brown or Phillip May, Cherie Blair?

How petty and childish

Notonthestairs · 31/01/2022 18:41

Gove's PPS Angela Richardson MP has resigned citing the PM.
