But I don't support BJ

What difference does that make? You just trashed MPs for bringing inestimably poignant individual examples of the reason why he has to go. Thousands upon thousands of people complied with the restrictions to the letter while their isolated loved ones were dying, and the Prime Minister and his chosen few partied down. But you find their only opportunity for representation in the House of Commons 'nauseating'?

babybythesea · 31/01/2022 19:27

I was particularly impressed by how keen Johnson is to ‘learn lessons.’ Bit confused by what lessons he thinks he needs to learn though. I mean, if he needs to learn not to break rules he put in place then I’m not entirely sure he can cope leading the country. If that’s not the lesson, then what is the lesson he’s so keen to learn?

Can I also use this as a defence? If I steal, can I earnestly say that I will definitely learn that stealing us not a good idea?

It’s a bit like some of the five year olds in my class. Very enthusiastic but not altogether sure what they are supposed to be doing. Or why. Or how. Still, enthusiasm for learning is really important. Now he needs to learn the lesson well away from public office where he can do so much damage.

Nadine Dorries was spouting nonsense on Sky News earlier too. She seems to be doing the rounds.

Alexandra2001 · 31/01/2022 19:32

@derxa

We have the highest number by some way, nearest is Italy on 146k we are 155k.Germany is 118k.It goes to show that drinking and making critical decisions does not go hand in hand. 20 countries in Europe have higher death rates per million than the UK. Italy and Belgium included
That wasn't the original question, which was:

Which country in Europe has a higher number of covid deaths?

The answer to that is the UK, by some margin.

Has Fabricant been shut in a fridge to keep him quiet? There must be some explanation that we have not heard is wisdom on today's events yet.
romatheroamer · 31/01/2022 19:37

One of Johnson's most loyal supporters is Dorries. Just seen her interviewed on Ch. 4 news. There is no way this woman should be in the Cabinet, let alone Culture Secretary. Her level of debate is appalling. It's like trying to interview a 9 year old in a strop.

Nah, all the 9 year olds I know are much more articulate than that when they strop. They stamp their foot less as well.

Please can someone remind me why the Dickens May made Johnson Foreign Sec? IIRC that was the start of his way back in? Did she have to appease a portion of the party? I don't recall the details but I know i was gobsmacked when she did it.

He spoke in the Commons earlier, maybe someone took his phone away after that

I've no idea either

Iain Watson @iainjwatson

Emerging from the 1922 committee meeting with @borisjohnson a critic of the PM says their colleagues are 'fucking deluded' -and
'There is no way we are getting 54 letters' And mood improved when PM said he'd publish the full Gray report and would say so if asked at PMQs
An ally of the PM's said he promised personnel changes at no10 -
Though no names divulged

Thirtytimesround · 31/01/2022 19:47

While all this goes on, I do wonder who, if anyone, is running the country. You know, the one with the super high death rate, super high mental health crisis, super high child poverty level, recently estranged from all its closest allies. That country.

We know Boris has zero integrity. The urgent and pressing question is why, out of the 359 Conservative MPs in th House of Commons, there aren’t 54 with enough integrity to write a letter demanding that he go.

That is a very depressing fact.

All this ‘who would replace him’ chat is such nonsense, literally anyone would be better. Ben Wallace. David Davies. Liz Truss. Rishi Sunak. Sajid Javid. Steve Barclay. There are 358 Conservative MPs who are absolutely brilliant at not being Boris Johnson. Why can’t we have one of them?

Roussette · 31/01/2022 19:47

Fabricant has tweeted about how Johnson worked the room when in front of the 1922 committee and it was like a Billy Graham evangelical live-in.

He really is a complete tool.

I'm away and with a lot of other nationalities at the moment, I can promise the Boris fanclub, he is a complete laughing stock. I think the rest of the world thinks we've lost our collective minds

The good news keeps on coming in.

They really are determined to be the last Conservative government.

In the course of my work I talk to people from many countries. Over the past two months they have been asking about Boris more often than about the weather.
LizzieW1969 · 31/01/2022 19:50

Was it maybe a case of keeping her enemies closer? She would have known that he could cause her trouble on the backbenches after having had 2 terms as London Mayor and a high profile role in the leave campaign.

And of course he did cause trouble for her after his sacking as Foreign Secretary, leading to her Brexit deal being rejected and her being forced to resign as PM.

It certainly wouldn’t have been her preference to have him in her Cabinet.

IIRC she was trying to appease the grassroots and right wing of the party.

I thought it was because she needed him in the tent pissing out, rather than the other way round.

I’m so furious at my impotence to do anything. I worker to my MP over Cummings and received a standard letter, I doubt it made it to them past the secretary. Shame on the lot of them.

LizzieW1969 · 31/01/2022 19:53

That was in reply to @derxa and @DuncinToffee. I wasn’t clear there.

Clearly the thread has moved on now. And very depressing, it looks like we’re stuck with BoJo now. Sad

Roussette · 31/01/2022 19:57

His name has come up and people just laugh and shake their head in disbelief

Ooo not sure who this lady is with the bandana but I like what she said about people’s anger at the report being held up by the Met being late to the party, the same Met who were happy to arrest women at the Everard protest.
Hannah Bardell, SNP MP for Livingston - she also suggested a 6pm curfew for men after Sarah Everard’s murder.
Notonthestairs · 31/01/2022 20:01

"Intriguingly I’m told the PM also suggested that Sue Gray may never submit her full report to him, though he promised to publish it if she does."

From Ben Kentish on Twitter.

Notonthestairs · 31/01/2022 20:03

Why would Sue Grey NEVER submit the full report???
