@ClaudineClare

In amongst all the glee about the downfall of BJ we are a country in crises. We need to come together at this point. I don't get it

What don't you get? How do you suggest we "come together" to solve the energy crisis, the cost of living crisis? That is what governments are supposed to be for- to prevent these crises happening in the first place, and to deal with them if they do happen.

I suppose we could take to the streets, but I am not sure if that is now against the law due to Patel's bill...

I wondered this too. What exactly does us coming together mean and what's the mechanism for that doing anything to tackle the current crisis?
RedToothBrush · 04/02/2022 08:24

And my point about concrete bridges isn't about them being the same design as genoa, its about how we built so many at the same time and there is a going question mark over the life expectancy of them. We do have much better maintenance checks than Italy. Where the problem is that, as they age the cost of maintenance increases. So we will see many coming to the end of their lives at the same time, but we are not in effect 'saving up' for the cost of doing this.

Its the problem that we face with many buildings we built in the building boom after WWII.

There is no strategy. We can see it in hospitals and schools no longer fit for purpose too.

RedToothBrush · 04/02/2022 08:25

Bridges is just one of the next big ones to start needing to be rebuilt.

Peregrina · 04/02/2022 08:27

Johnson is the least experienced MP to serve as PM in years.

I am not wholly sure there - Cameron had very little experience. I suppose you can count Leader as the Opposition as experience but apart from that? Other public offices? Johnson as well as his two terms as Mayor had also been MP for Henley (Heseltine's old seat) for 7 years. I would imagine that if he'd not become Mayor he would have stayed at Henley forever. Would he have gained ministerial office? Not under Cameron.

Not that this says much. Cameron was hostage to the ERG and led us to Brexit. Which of course, as we know and will soon be told, is wonderful.

Is everyone convinced he'd lose a NC vote?

I'm not totally convinced.

The mood music is definitely there. So yes.

They are in a pickle as if he doesnt lose a VONC they are stuck with him for a year and there is no obvious successor.
Also if there is a VONC and he doesn't lose, depending on the numbers, including open the door to labour triggering a broader VONC in the government as a whole, triggering a GE. Which the conservatives definitely don't want as polling suggests they'd get a drubbing.
Tricky times. I find it very interesting as they've totally boxed themselves into a corner

Peregrina · 04/02/2022 08:49

We need to come together at this point.

Yes we do, and when Covid first struck, my impression was that people were coming together. Johnson had already set a poor example by not attending COBRA meetings and being more concerned to finalise his divorce. This was then compounded by Cummings' jaunt to Durham and Barnard Castle. This blew public goodwill to pieces made worse by the way they all dutifully jumped in to defend him.

Coming together now will depend on a clear out at the top, some genuine contrition from them, and having people in power who are prepared to try to set an example.

Zonder · 04/02/2022 08:52

Dead right @Peregrina
I was trying to think what the pp must mean by coming together.

DuncinToffee · 04/02/2022 08:56

Communities came together to try and provide NHS staff and other healthcare workers with PPE.
( remember government counted a pair of gloves as 2 seperate items)

Communities came together tp provide food and other essentials to vulnerable people and those isolating

DePfeffoff · 04/02/2022 08:57

How long before one Big Baby's fans starts quoting how the Tories won yesterday's by-election?

And that the resignations of Reynolds et al is Johnson reforming No.10 as promised

That one's already started.

Who the hell would want to take over those jobs? And why? It's not as if they'll be in post for long.

Notonthestairs · 04/02/2022 08:59

It was always going to be like this wasn't it? The chaos was built in. Covid just delayed matters. That's not my Brexit.

longwayoff · 04/02/2022 09:03

Contrition? From any of this lot? I think that would be a long wait. The sooner they're collecting their hefty pensions after losing their seats, the better. Hopefully we'll reach a point of contagion where the cabal is seen by others in the Party as adversely affecting their own prospects and they'll be left as the small, powerless rump they should be. Self interest will move them, little else.

DuncinToffee · 04/02/2022 09:03

Yes
Peregrina · 04/02/2022 09:08

( remember government counted a pair of gloves as 2 seperate items)

That probably isn't entirely fair - I think gloves come in boxes of 50, rather than pairs. The real criticism is the lack of PPE and orders given to dodgy mates who then couldn't proved the goods, whilst firms who had been providing such equipment for decades and knew what was required were frozen out of the contracts.

DuncinToffee · 04/02/2022 09:09

Greg Hands, the Energy Minister doing the rounds this morning

^"It's my job to make sure the country is prepared on all things related to energy. It's not my job to make energy price forecasts for the future."

Where do they find these people, I despair

DuncinToffee · 04/02/2022 09:14

I might have remembered it wrong Peregrina and you are right about the contracts

Blossomtoes · 04/02/2022 09:21

@LoudSnoringDog

Mirza going is the literal Rat jumping the sinking ship. She doesn't really care about the savile comment and is just capitalising on the rage from it. Trying to make herself look in touch with the public but we see the truth
Why on earth would you think that? What has she got to gain from it?
CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 04/02/2022 09:33

The WhatsApp "encouraging" loyal MPs to tweet that the no,10 departures are a planned clear out was leaked overnight twitter.com/KevinASchofield/status/1489337562921684995
They must really think we are stupid

In other news I see that some very incriminating correspondence between Hancock and Paterson re Randox has been released ....oh and yet another resignation from No 10.

UnconditionalSurrender · 04/02/2022 10:27

Lots on Twitter from lefty commentators loving the tone of Mirzas letter. I hated it. The whole 'You were such a good boy and you've turned out to be a disappointment. You should've listened to Nanny' tone was ick.
Apparently her husband is at no10 as well but pals with Sunak.

As for the idea we should all be coming together in the face of a national crisis is ridiculous. Rally round the government who got us here. I think not.

DePfeffoff · 04/02/2022 10:40

It's my job to make sure the country is prepared on all things related to energy. It's not my job to make energy price forecasts for the future

Loving that admission that Hands literally has no idea how to do his job. How can you possibly make sure the country is prepared without making some sort of price forecast for the future?

GreenLunchBox · 04/02/2022 10:45

It’s already started. The comments section in the DM are a cesspit of racism regarding Mirza and Sunak. People talking about how Asians are taking over, calling this the ‘curry coup’ etc. Nasty stuff. Nevertheless Mirza claimed racism doesn’t exist in order to protect Boris, so she’ll have to suck it up.

That is true- so yeah, suck it up, Mirza
