OK hope I can explain this without outing myself.

I work part time and have my lunch at 11.30, the full timers all go for lunch at 1.30. Yesterday an urgent project came up that had to be finished by 3pm.
I had already had my lunch as it hadn't come through by then. Some of the full timers decided to take their lunches after 3pm to complete the project.
One of my colleagues kept complaining about how hungry she was I replied - Im feeling hungry now too, I can't moan though Ive had lunch and I'm finishing soon.
She reported me to my manager for rubbing it in the full timers faces that I was finishing and had my lunch 🤣

@careerchangemaybe

And it's not "I can't because I'm part time". It's "I can't because I have commitments outside of work and I need to leave on time". There should be no further explanation required.
You make it sound like full time staff have no commitments, which is bs. But they're expected to stay and meet pressing deadlines. Because full time.
careerchangemaybe · 29/01/2022 19:38

@grapewine

No, I make absolutely no distinction between full or part time staff and if you'd read my responses to that poster fully, you'd see that it is she who is repeatedly making this contrast. I am simply saying that regardless of whether you work 3 hours a week or 43 hours a week - if you need to leave on time for commitments outside of work then so be it! You should do so without guilt and without feeling pressured into "being a team player". I feel strongly about this as a parent with absolutely zero support networks other than my partner, so when I need to get to the nursery for pick up time, I need to go, end of! My DC have no one else who will be there for them. Only me. I'm not allowing my workplace to guilt me into leaving them stranded when my contracted hours, be they full or part time, are finished. No way.

Ridiculous to report it but your comment wasn't helpful. Maybe your colleagues will have the sense to bring some snacks from now on.

Mistressiggi · 29/01/2022 19:50

I know exactly how little the part timers pull their weight. Not all. But most.
In your badly managed business, possibly.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 29/01/2022 20:14

Sad that this has turned into a part time v full time thing. You can people work full time or part time that don’t pull their weight and who do more than their share.
Think this was more about a stupid comment but given OP hasn’t come back i guess we don’t really know.

Exactly it shouldn’t be part time vs full time. Sometimes it’s unfair the way the work is divided up but the responsibility should be on managers to make it fair

Quite, Mistressiggi. It’s astonishing how some people on this thread view part time workers. Oh and TwoTimesTwo ( or whatever your name is, I can’t be bothered to scroll up a page to find out), you are talking absolute bollocks.
Cigfree · 29/01/2022 21:45

TwoTimesTwo, ReadySteadyGo, something like that I think.

@ReadySteadyTwins , I think you mean. And I agree with you entirely.

BABAHOTEL · 30/01/2022 03:20

@RoomOfRequirement

I wouldn't have reported you but I see where she was coming from.
Can you? Really?
YumeKagerou · 30/01/2022 03:50

Well today I didn't get lunch until 3.30. My son raged when I did because he was full but then hungry because I reminded him about food, so I gave him half my sandwich. Who do I report him to?

Goldenbear · 30/01/2022 05:41

I don't know how people can give a shit about stuff like this, it is just so so petty. I mean get a life or a hobbie or something where work isn't the only place you get your weekly excitement from!

BABAHOTEL · 30/01/2022 05:56

*I am a SAHM. I used to work both full time. And part time. I've managed teams of staff.

I know exactly how little the part timers pull their weight. Not all. But most. This "I don't get paid to do what the full timers do, so fuck putting in anything to help the team." No, you don't get paid for not being at work, funny that. You get paid exactly the same equivalently, for the hours you do. And this entitles you to be the laziest member of the team. Oh, do fuck off dear.
*

Good job you're a SAHM now, you sound an extremely toxic person to work alongside, as for managing, I just can't imagine it.

Do you become a poor worker when you were part time?

daisychain01 · 30/01/2022 06:04

The work environment has a lot to do with this kind of shit @Goldenbear, and whether petty stuff is tolerated or just wouldn't happen because staff knows they'll look like idiots.

We have lots of part-time and full-time staff where I work, it's a highly professional environment where people are focused on delivering projects and measured in their performance. We don't have time for fannying around with petty stuff like waaaaah I'm haven't had a sandwich, Jeez that's kindergarten behaviour, we're grown adults, it's expected that we are grown up enough not to skip a mid-day break then sulk that they're starving and 'run crying to teacher'. It's a miracle how some people keep their jobs!

SquirrelG · 30/01/2022 06:16

Your colleague is an idiot and if I were her manager I would be rolling my eyes.

Chuechebache · 30/01/2022 08:21

I bet your manager has lots of dummies in her/his drawer to give out to the childish staff.

MatronicO6 · 30/01/2022 08:38

Ridiculous to report your comment but it was a dick comment to make.

CaptainCabinets · 30/01/2022 08:59

@ReadySteadyTwins

Part-timers are paid for the hours they work. They do not get a full time salary for part-time hours.

Yes we all know this. By disappearing at 4 though, they always miss the "we all need to stay and pull together." So the people finishing at 5 are seen as the employees who have an expectation to put in the extra graft. For which they aren't paid. But do it as the "team effort."

The person leaving just an hour earlier, puts in none of the "over and above" that just by nature falls to all the others.

Then when that person, whilst observing them all working through their lunch, states "I'm hungry too" after already having their own lunch and "I'm off" so enjoy the deadline you're all hammering towards, isn't so much to do with being part time, but more to do with a selfish attitude. "Oh, you're all hungry eh? Yeah, I could eat a second lunch. You all are really busy eh? Sucks to be you, doesn't fall under my hours, I'm off."

Yeah. They're jealous. That's what it is.

You sound a bit nuts. Everyone is paid for the hours they work, why on earth would you expect a part-timer to stay for a full shift to still only be paid a part-time wage? They don’t ‘disappear’ at 4, they just...finish work. Confused The ‘team effort’ doesn’t trump other life responsibilities such as childcare, other commitments, needing to rest, or simply not wanting to stay because you are not paid to be there at that time. I’ve stayed past my shift end time if there have been emergencies I’ve been involved in around handover time that I need to either continue to participate in or make sure they are handed over safely and fully because that is the nature of my work, but if I worked in a job where close of business was X time and nothing unsafe would happen if I left at X time then I wouldn’t stay. Not a chance. And if there was a threat of job loss if I didn’t stay late to complete work then that is on managers to see that workload is shared out effectively to ensure completion by the end of the official working day.

Also if you’re frequently having to stay late to ‘pull together’ then perhaps your energy would be better spent focusing on your own time management skills instead of getting so cross about other people’s working patterns? Smile

@girlmom21

I have to ask - what kind of industry has a project that comes up at 12:00 that needs to be delivered by 15:00?

Unless it was one given by my old boss which he'd sat on for 3 weeks and then expected people to cancel holiday to get him out of the shit, of course...

It sounds like the kind of storyline they'd have given to Mike Baldwin at Underworld.
fetchacloth · 30/01/2022 17:37

If I was the manager I wouldn't have taken it seriously. In fact I would probably tell the section to grow up🙄

fetchacloth · 30/01/2022 17:39

The dummies are probably being thrown out of the pram as we speak😂
purplebunny2012 · 30/01/2022 17:45

Wow, she's pathetic!

TickyTacky · 30/01/2022 17:48

With all of the huffing & puffing and upset over her own hunger could she not have just eaten a quick sandwich and therefore become more productive? Ridiculous.

Payitforward55 · 30/01/2022 17:52

Do you work back in 1922? If I were the manager I would be looking for a new job. Melters

Rtruth · 30/01/2022 17:53

Silly complaint. Silly comment.
