OK hope I can explain this without outing myself.

I work part time and have my lunch at 11.30, the full timers all go for lunch at 1.30. Yesterday an urgent project came up that had to be finished by 3pm.
I had already had my lunch as it hadn't come through by then. Some of the full timers decided to take their lunches after 3pm to complete the project.
One of my colleagues kept complaining about how hungry she was I replied - Im feeling hungry now too, I can't moan though Ive had lunch and I'm finishing soon.
She reported me to my manager for rubbing it in the full timers faces that I was finishing and had my lunch 🤣

I’d have finished my speech by offering, seeing as I’m available, to go fetch food for the others or at least throwing a couple of packs of biscuits their way. Just because you’re part-time it doesn’t stop you from raising morale of the team.

ReadySteadyTwins · 29/01/2022 16:21
@ReadySteadyTwins

That’s quite a narrative you’ve created there. It’s certainly a possibility but you’re assuming a lot
It's quite the narrative, because it's pretty obvious that's the case, yet so many are missing this, and acting as if "Woman A says she's hungry. Woman B runs to manager." And ohhhhh the hilarity.

There's a reason woman B went to the manager. The comments today would have been the catalyst. Not the all consuming cause.

JudgeJ · 29/01/2022 16:21

@MrsWhites

That might be the pettiest complaint to a manager ever! Your colleague must be very easily offended!
Isn't being offended the newest pseudo-Olympic sport? Some people must be exhausted from trying to be offended, so much so that I find their antics very offensive. Where do I claim?
ReadySteadyTwins · 29/01/2022 16:23

If your manager even raises with you, turn it back round, tell them you were empathising with her, that you already had eaten and were still hungry, so can’t imagine how she must have been feeling.

So lie then, yeah?

And these other colleagues aren't "offended."

They are fed up with her selfish attitude and work ethic.

grapewine · 29/01/2022 16:24

Why people get pissed off, is in incidents like this, when all the full time people (earning the same hourly rate) end up pulling their weight far more. It's the full timers, at 5pm who always end up with the "we need to stay until this is done" and working til 7pm, while the part timer walks out at 4pm because "that's when they finish" and is never there at the end of the day when the problems happen.

This has been my experience as well tbh.

Wreath21 · 29/01/2022 16:24

I'm wondering about the history, too. Is this colleague a notorious whiner? Is she good at her job? Is she the odd one out in the team in any way, by any chance? Some people are awful whiners and tale-tellers - but some office cultures have one or two scapegoats, the person who'se always on the receiving end of the snarky comments who eventually snaps after something that, in isolation, was pretty harmless.

Meandthesky · 29/01/2022 16:40

Wouldn’t report to a manager but would think you were rubbing it in a bit.

My manager would roll their eyes hard at anyone reporting something this petty.

MaudieandMe · 29/01/2022 16:47

Sadly not an uncommon reaction from a bunch of full-timers feeling unnecessarily jealous of their part-time colleagues.

As a former manager I can honestly say that my part-time staff were often far more productive than some of the full timers, as they wasted far less time wandering around chit chatting and just got on with the work.

RantyAunty · 29/01/2022 16:49

I'm not sure I even know what to say about this as it's so childish.

If I had an employee like her who tattled a lot over nothing, they'd find themselves managed out.

Thank goodness for WFH!

ReadySteadyTwins · 29/01/2022 16:51

If I'm working so hard, I haven't had time to eat, and someone else lets me know that they've eaten, and will be off shortly whilst I continue working, to eat more...... believe me, the word to describe that person, is not one I'm "jealous" of.

careerchangemaybe · 29/01/2022 16:51

Part time people are not these poor little people on half the salary. They are on the same salary, but work half the hours.

Eh? They are definitely not on the same salary - their salary is pro rata'd for the hours they work. So if they work half of the FT equivalent then they are paid half of the FT salary. I thought that was obvious.

careerchangemaybe · 29/01/2022 16:52

My manager would roll their eyes hard at anyone reporting something this petty.

Mine too.

amitoooldforthisshit · 29/01/2022 17:07

what is this and arts an crafts lesson for 6 year old's

DiddyHeck · 29/01/2022 17:09

It was petty to report you but you sound like a wind-up merchant Wink

I would've rolled my eyes and told you to fuck off 🤣

Tal45 · 29/01/2022 17:11

Sounds like she's jealous that you work part time and she has to work full time. Absolutely pathetic to try to take it out on you.

amusedbush · 29/01/2022 17:13

I'm embarrassed for your colleague - that might be the pettiest thing I've ever heard someone taking offence to.

If you’re working ‘so hard’ that you haven’t had time to eat, you’re probably not as productive as you think you are.

Managing your time effectively is an essential skill and will ensure you don’t suffer from ill health at a later date. It’s imperative that you take regular meal breaks to maintain your well being.

ChampagneLassie · 29/01/2022 17:15

Jez if I was her manager having to deal with this sort of nonsense! This is not a work issue - the woman could and should have told you how your comment made her feel the idea that she went to your manager about it is beyond ridiculous

UserBotTrending · 29/01/2022 17:17

That's bananas. I hope this woman never ever mentions buying anything (on her ft salary) you only have pt wages..

freecuthbert · 29/01/2022 17:17

This gave me a giggle! I can't believe she'd report that, what an absolute grass! I don't even see it as a cheeky or dickish thing for you to say unlike some PPs are suggesting, it's just a normal thing to say in a conversation. I've definitely heard people say similar things at work and I wouldn't think twice about it. Does she have form for being petty and jumping at the chance to dob people in?

ReadySteadyTwins · 29/01/2022 17:26

Yes, if one person is. But that's not the case. They all were.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 29/01/2022 17:26

Public Service Announcement for MNers (and the OP's colleagues)

Part-timers are paid for the hours they work. They do not get a full time salary for part-time hours.

(unless they are part of the 4 day week trial but lets not confuse the issue).

guardiansofthegalaxychocs · 29/01/2022 17:31

@BellaTheDarkOverlord

Let her crack on. Reported for "rubbing it in her face". Bloody hell Grin
Perhaps you should report her if she mentions any purchases- for rubbing your nose in the fact that she is paid more as a full timer! Ridiculous.
girlmom21 · 29/01/2022 17:38

I have to ask - what kind of industry has a project that comes up at 12:00 that needs to be delivered by 15:00?

Unless it was one given by my old boss which he'd sat on for 3 weeks and then expected people to cancel holiday to get him out of the shit, of course...

ReadySteadyTwins · 29/01/2022 17:39

Part-timers are paid for the hours they work. They do not get a full time salary for part-time hours.

Yes we all know this. By disappearing at 4 though, they always miss the "we all need to stay and pull together." So the people finishing at 5 are seen as the employees who have an expectation to put in the extra graft. For which they aren't paid. But do it as the "team effort."

The person leaving just an hour earlier, puts in none of the "over and above" that just by nature falls to all the others.

Then when that person, whilst observing them all working through their lunch, states "I'm hungry too" after already having their own lunch and "I'm off" so enjoy the deadline you're all hammering towards, isn't so much to do with being part time, but more to do with a selfish attitude. "Oh, you're all hungry eh? Yeah, I could eat a second lunch. You all are really busy eh? Sucks to be you, doesn't fall under my hours, I'm off."

Yeah. They're jealous. That's what it is.
