Going to an event, we were massively delayed in traffic getting to pils .They couldn't wait for us.
So when we arrived they were leaving and mil clocked our friend in pils old tux which dh had leant him, an old 80s thing.??

Dh served us done drinks by which point fil was calling dh saying if we didn't leave immediately we wouldn't get a space in the car park! When we got to the car park it was half empty.
Mil then questioned dh about the tux friend wearing as she felt it was actually fils old one and that was for dh not to give away.

@ineedsun

Can anyone DM me the link to the champagne thread, not because I think it links to OP but because it sounds hilarious
Google " fil reluctant champagne mumsnet" It's a great thread.

@PriamFarrl

He talks whilst making a fag? Well it’s no wonder then is it. Have you ever heard the like?
I can hold a conversation whilst rolling a cigarette. I dread to think what this says about me, although I'm neither a gourmet chef, Australian or a Crocodile Dundee-alike.

@Usernamenotavailabletryanother

Was the ‘event’ family therapy?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Womencanlift · 31/01/2022 12:12

I have just re-read the OPs comments on the champagne thread and it’s got to be the same poster. If it’s not then the fact that there are two such entitled people out there is worrying Grin

No wonder the PIL here wanted the OP out, they probably thought their drinks cabinet would be missing some expensive bottles when they got back. Of course the OP wouldn’t think this is an issue as it’s FAMILY!

Are you burly enough to bulge out of an old DJ though?

Chilledchablis1 · 31/01/2022 13:16

Just read the Champagne thread and firmly believe this is the same poster as this thread plus “ backing the wrong horse “ thread .

lunar1 · 31/01/2022 14:27

I just need to check we are all thinking along the same lines here.

The tux is a bit like Ron Weasley's hand me down from goblet (though the bulging comments have thrown me).

The OP is Hyacinth Bucket with an alcohol problem, and they all travelled to the in-laws house in some kind of tiny clown car.

The in-laws live in an enormous mansion filled with alcohol and trinkets. The MIL has most likely turned to Valium to get her through life.

Finally, in my head everyone involved is exceedingly tall, I've no idea why 🤷🏻‍♀️

Workinghardeveryday · 31/01/2022 15:01

I totally agree it’s the Champagne poster too, not read the backing the wrong horse thread though. Has anyone got the link?

OpheliaTrousersnake · 31/01/2022 18:09

@Hisanimalgrace That is a genius update. Thank you.

I think Operation Yewtree put paid to that sort of thing.
MulticolourTulips · 31/01/2022 19:05

Didn't some survey once say being stuck anywhere is hugely stressful?

Maybe to a hospital appointment or a job interview.
Not a 50 minute journey when, even when you get there you have time for a drink and a relax before setting off to an event.

I think that survey probably referred to something like I've experienced when there was a van fire on the M5 and a six hour journey turned into a 12 hour one, and we all had to pee in our Chilly bottles.

That's stressful.

FatLabrador · 31/01/2022 19:47

Lol at this thread. If MiL was really annoyed about the tux then that is a bit petty but was she? Most wouldn't mind their ds giving it to a friend who is visiting and doesnt have the right attire for a formal event, and she probably assumed he just loaned it anyway. The lateness would be frustrating even if not your fault so I can sympathise with her being a bit tense about getting to the event.

Womencanlift · 31/01/2022 20:18

What kind of event is formal enough for a tux but not formal enough that it doesn’t matter if you are late?

I am imagining the friend as Sir Les Patterson.

An imaginary one 🤷🏼‍♀️
lborgia · 31/01/2022 20:40

I've just realised!

I think MIL is certain the friend is responsible for all their ill mannered behaviour, AND I think she knows OP fancies Mick Dundee Shock

J'ACCUSE!!!

I have no clue why, but this is the first time a paragraph has made me laugh out loud on MN. I think it was when I got to the clown car bit, and I just imagined more and more and more gourmet chef Australians in horrible tuxedoes falling out all the car doors, like drunk penguins.

“ It was our choice though how early or late we wanted to be.”

I slogged through 16 pages while keeping my temper but this made me want to throw my phone against a wall. Imagine just swanning through life being this entitled.

cakewench · 31/01/2022 21:59

So ignoring a lot of this: I find it interesting that you’ve leapt to the idea that they don’t “trust” you or your DH in the house. I’d have assumed that they were worried about being on time for the event if they were ushering us out the door; not trusting us wouldn’t have even entered my head. (And tbh I can imagine this happening with my pil! I think older people worry about timeliness and would be stressed about this)

So is there some reason you immediately thought they wanted you out because they didn’t trust you in the house? The only reason for making this mental leap would be if there’s been a comment or some kind of history to explain this?

PriamFarrl · 31/01/2022 22:01

You know when there are threads every so often about people who are always late. This is one of those people.

OverCCCs · 31/01/2022 22:43

Did your Dh have permission to park in the private lot? Maybe FIL thought that since DH is not himself a member of the club, he’d have to find a public lot which could have been filling up.

HalzTangz · 31/01/2022 23:02

@Hisanimalgrace

My post is about being Petty. Trying to oust us from the house, not leaving us in peace. Panicking about us being in their house for moments and trying to get us out then moaning about an old cast off sported by a friend she called "dreadful "
Do they know your friend, and know a friend was coming. They maybe happy to have you and your husband in the house but not a stranger. TBF I'd be the same. I don't think there's anything wrong asking about the suit either
