To think life is too short to slice onions

Spaghetti for dinner. DH bought whole onions. Sob.

AIBU to think ready made sliced onions are a marvellous invention? And never buy whole onions again?

@EvaLution
I take your put on the top and roots. But less so on the unused half lurking at the back of the fridge and the rotten one you didn't quite get to in time. But let's not fall out over onions Smile

ArtemisFlop · 23/01/2022 15:13

YANBU- It's your life OP - if you don't want to
Chop onions- go you with the ready chopped! No one needs to martytr themselves over tasks when they have easy solutions.

Cocopopsss · 23/01/2022 15:27

@DwangelaForever

I got a chopper off amazon and it takes 2 seconds to dice my onions, best purchase ever.
Please share which chopper, there are so many on amazon! TIA

@Belledan1

Put the Swede in the microwave pierced as it is. Once gone softish easy to chop and peel. I do buy sliced cheese for DS. Makes lots of toasties and cheese rolls. Just less mess lol.
That would be great if I was cooking swede for more than 2 of us!
NerrSnerr · 24/01/2022 12:19

I think we all do some things that are not great for the environment but are convenient or nicer.

I will buy ready chopped onions. I accept the plastic waste is rubbish. I never forget a shopping bag so don't use carriers, buy all clothes apart from underwear from the charity shop and haven't been on a plane since 2013.

There are very few people who lead perfect eco friendly lives, but we can all do our bit in some areas even if we're a bit shit in others. It's a bit hypocritical to be judgmental about someone buying frozen onions and the eco cost of this if you're driving your kids a mile to school in your discovery whilst looking forward to many long haul holidays etc.

ButtockUp · 24/01/2022 12:23

Perfect post @NerrSnerr

YANBU

I'm still haunted by the memory of the chopping board growing up that made everything cut on it taste oniony.

Admittedly I have a chronic illness but there are so many things that, added up, make life easier. I say take advantage.

OneTC · 24/01/2022 12:32

I watched one of those "where does your food come from" type TV shows and a segment was about canned pineapple chunks. I'd always assumed they were getting whizzed in a machine somewhere, cos that's cheaper than paying someone right? Turns out it's cheaper than paying some people, but not people that lived in whichever country this factory was in, where most of the UKs pineapple chunks came from, and where people spend all day on their feet trimming pineapples with machetes to exacting standards (waste too much flesh) and with time penalties (not enough pineapples chopped per minute) for effectively fuck all money.

I was surprised. Maybe the age of robots is a way off yet

Nat6999 · 24/01/2022 17:06

I chop & freeze all my onions, carrots & celery as soon as my shopping is delivered. Peel & chopped in the food processor. Takes 20 minutes to chop a couple of kilos of onions as my food processor is only a small one.

AlanThePig · 24/01/2022 17:29

@Camomila

I have hypermobility and dyspraxia. I buy all sorts of vegetables frozen and pre chopped.

I tried to chop a melon recently but then the knife got stuck and DH took over chopping duties before I chopped my finger off Grin

Ha! Snap! Only in my case I'd probably dislocate a finger or thumb putting pressure on the knife. Trying to chop swede is impossible for me and I'm yet to see that frozen ☺️

It's easy to forget that a two minute task of slicing an onion isn't always that easy for others.

autumntimebrowns · 24/01/2022 19:00

Psst. Morrison's sell frozen diced swede.

AlanThePig · 24/01/2022 20:28

@autumntimebrowns

Psst. Morrison's sell frozen diced swede.
WHAT!? This could be a game changer, thank you x
RealBecca · 24/01/2022 20:33

If theres time for mumsnet theres time to chop onions.

WomanStanleyWoman · 24/01/2022 20:47

So people are only allowed to do anything even vaguely fun if they’ve covered every mundane task first? I’d pull the plug if my life was that dull.

Parker231 · 24/01/2022 20:55

There is time for many things but I’d still rather do something else and continue to buy ready prepared fruit and veggies. Life is too short to waste time when there is a time saving alternative.

OhWhyNot · 24/01/2022 21:05

I have time to chop onions

Just it’s easier. I like to make my life easier and cooking raiser

Tesco’s used to do an amazing frozen cheese sauce sadly they haven’t sold it for a while now boo 😒

Flingingmelon · 24/01/2022 21:08

Pre chopped frozen onions are amazing. No waste, no tears and half the time to brown.

Thinkbiglittleone · 24/01/2022 21:10

Do they not go all soggy and brown if you don't use them same day ?

I agree though, why not get them pre chopped, no stingy eyes. You

JudgeJ · 24/01/2022 21:10

Cooking from scratch yet too lazy to chop an onion!

NinaDefoe · 24/01/2022 21:10

Sainsbury’s ready chopped butternut squash & onion is sold as a soup mix.
It is amazing and worth the extra for the convenience.

Ready chopped 600g £1.50

Whole butternut Squash 1kg £1.50

JudgeJ · 24/01/2022 21:13

@DwangelaForever

I got a chopper off amazon and it takes 2 seconds to dice my onions, best purchase ever.
How long to peel the offending onion, get the gadget out, wash the gadget and put it away? Maybe the OP needs to batch cook spaghetti sauce or, as I used to do, a basic onion, tomato and garlic base that can morph into so many other things.
JudgeJ · 24/01/2022 21:28

@Momicrone

Does pre- grated cheese offend people as much
The only cheese I buy ready grated is Mozzarella for my breakfast omelette, the though of trying to grate a ball of Mozzarella makes me cringe.
Peas252 · 24/01/2022 21:57

My dh whipped his chopper out in the kitchen once. Made a terrible mess.

ShinyPikachu · 24/01/2022 22:14

I have chronic pain and fatigue from fibromyalgia and it's hard enough for me to stand long enough to cook without adding extra things like chopping onions and cleaning up the extra dishes after (no space for a dishwasher).

Frozen pre-chopped onions and peppers and similar things like the fresh pre-sliced mushrooms (I don't like the frozen mushrooms as they get too wet and slimy) mean I'm more likely to be able to cook from scratch without causing too many knock on effects for me. The little things do add up when you have a disability and it's much less waste than when we get a takeaway because I can't manage any cooking.

I buy all my veg frozen now too. I know it might not be quite as tasty as fresh for many things but it saves time and energy for me and lasts a lot longer as DH and DC don't eat as much veg as I do so I can cook just a couple of bits of different ones for me each time.
