To think life is too short to slice onions

Spaghetti for dinner. DH bought whole onions. Sob.

AIBU to think ready made sliced onions are a marvellous invention? And never buy whole onions again?

I don’t buy pre chopped fruit and veggies to avoid crying or any smell but 100% for convenience - I’ll buy anything which saves even a small amount of time.

sueelleker · 23/01/2022 11:20

@PadBurnup

I'm with you OP, but i find chopped onions are too big. Waitrose frozen chopped shallots and frozen soffitto however are the best.

Add the frozen blocks of ginger and also garlic from Asda's world food freezer and it means i can have dinner going in a few mins. I've not chopped an onion in years.

I've not tried their shallots, but I'm with you on the soffrito! I chuck handfuls of it into casseroles and sauces (even if the recipe just says onions, I quite often use soffrito instead)
phoenixrosehere · 23/01/2022 11:23

I rather just cut them. I very rarely am cutting just one vegetable or fruit so seems like a waste of money. Plus, to me fresh cut onions taste better than the pre-cut and frozen onions. Saying that.. I tend to use shallots more than onions anyway unless it’s onion soup.

Soontobe60 · 23/01/2022 11:23

@Camomila

I have hypermobility and dyspraxia. I buy all sorts of vegetables frozen and pre chopped.

I tried to chop a melon recently but then the knife got stuck and DH took over chopping duties before I chopped my finger off Grin

Why does he not just chop everything?
Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/01/2022 11:25

I have a gadget that slices them.

anotherbrewplease · 23/01/2022 11:34

@Oneunslicedonion

YABU and quite frankly lazy in an extreme way.

I mean how hard is it? Are there lots of other simple tasks you 'can't be bothered with'?

VioletOcean · 23/01/2022 11:35

Chopped, frozen and shop bought. Can’t be bothered stinking of onion one watery eyes

longtompot · 23/01/2022 11:36

I have only ever bought pre sliced frozen onions for my yd as she has arthritis and cutting up foods is difficult when she is in a flare. I never know how much of presliced things to use to equal one onion for example (I used them once when I had run out of onions) so would probably over use and then it would cost even more.

PriamFarrl · 23/01/2022 11:40

@Oneunslicedonion

Yes … but I save TIME! Grin

I agree it doesn’t take hours but it definitely doesn’t take me seconds … plus stinging eyes!

It takes less than a minute.
LuckySantangelo35 · 23/01/2022 11:42

I would love to see all these people who can chop onions “in seconds” or “in under a minute” in action doing exactly what they claim

I fail to understand how it can take longer than a minute to chop an onion. What are you doing?
Ilovetommycat · 23/01/2022 11:44

Frozen chopped vegetables are great except for salads. I also regularly use fresh onions.
My eyes only water if I lean over the onions when chopping. If you stand up straight it makes a huge difference.

Pre grated cheese is vile, it's like cheese mixed with talcum powder.

Houseofvelour · 23/01/2022 11:45

I buy frozen diced onions because I hate chopping them and life is so much easier

LondonOx · 23/01/2022 11:49

I never thought I would buy into the pre prepared way… and then I tried pre-grated cheddar and can’t believe I resisted it for so long. Will give pre chopped onions a go! YANBU!

user1496146479 · 23/01/2022 11:50

@Spaghettio

I pre-chop (using the food processor) onions and freeze them. So much easier and means no crying too!
My too! Helps with the hidden veg for my children!!

My life isn’t too short to chop onions but it is definitely too short to judge other people for how they choose to prepare their veg!

Karenetta · 23/01/2022 11:57

Yanbu and not just onions but also as pps said soffrito, peppers, leeks, ginger, garlic, chilli, herbs ... got em all, all chopped and ready to go. It makes me much more inclined to make proper meals, cuts down on waste, saves time and effort. Love it. Hope you got your DH to chop his onion.

Parker231 · 23/01/2022 12:03

I have bags in one of the freezer drawers with different chopped and prepared vegetables and in the fridge trays of prepared fruit and things like shredded lettuce, little bags of chopped spring onions, peppers and different types of grated cheese. Makes meal times so much easier.

Momicrone · 23/01/2022 12:05

Anotherbrewplease, it's hardly lazy if you use your freed up time to do different activities such as exercise, housework etc

PickAChew · 23/01/2022 12:10

I find frozen onion too wet to brown properly. Also, sometimes I want finely diced, sometimes I want roughly chopped and sometimes I want slices of a particular thickness. The chilled ones all appear to be roughly chopped.

If I had a lot of onions to deal with (and I mean more than the 500g or so that some of the recipes I have call for) I'd use my food processor.

Oneunslicedonion · 23/01/2022 12:10

I have concluded I am shite at chopping onions. I probably am quite lazy tbf Grin

OP posts:
Pedalpushers · 23/01/2022 12:11

I physically can't be in the same room as an onion being chopped, if I have to deal with them they go in the food processor. Don't like the pre chopped ones though, they seem sweaty and artificial somehow.

Motherdare · 23/01/2022 12:14

I haven’t bought or chopped an onion in years. I always have a bag of frozen chopped onion in my freezer, next to the frozen garlic, soffrito (onion, celery, carrot), basil, ginger and parsley. I also freeze leftover red wine in bags. Makes everything so much easier.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 23/01/2022 12:16

Haha, totally with you. I love frozen onions. Even my mum is converted and she’s a “cook from scratch” every meal person. People saying it takes seconds… no it doesn’t and it causes discomfort of stinging eyes.

PickAChew · 23/01/2022 12:18

I'm also hypermobile and dyspraxic. Decent knives make chopping do much easier for me (and safer)

I've never struggled with melon - it's quite soft - but squash and swede are buggers and I do sometimes buy them pre-diced or enlist dh's help. I'm often seduced by a fancy squash, in the autumn and half of it ends up in the bin as it's too much work and turns out to taste of nothing. I make a mental note to stick with butternut, which I forget by the time October comes around again!
