To think life is too short to slice onions

Spaghetti for dinner. DH bought whole onions. Sob.

AIBU to think ready made sliced onions are a marvellous invention? And never buy whole onions again?

@JudgeJ

Cooking from scratch yet too lazy to chop an onion!
That's me! That's one of the great things about being a grown up, you get to pick and choose what you can be bothered to do.

I use this to chop onions:

In my experience the ready sliced onions lack a lot in the flavour department.

But I sympathize. I used to have a job that involved slicing pounds of spanish onions in a french fry maker every morning. It was awful.

I now just not buy frozen onions. Haven't sliced an onion since 2015. The stink on my hands was the worst part.

hulahooper2 · 24/01/2022 23:05

I always have frozen ones in store , occasionally chop a ‘real’ but really not worth the stinging watery eyes

Twillow · 24/01/2022 23:12

It's so quick to do! Plus the ready sliced/chopped ones stink like gas...

Fromthebirdsnest · 24/01/2022 23:14

get a Food processor with the money you will save buying whole onions ! It does it for you , I chopped the vegetables for our soup in less then 3 minutes tonight x

Today out of interested I timed myself chopping an onion. From unpeeled to a chunky chop was 35 seconds. I didn’t rush or do it any differently to normal. It might have taken slightly longer had I chopped it finer.
But I have no disability or other additional needs.
Also, I don’t care about other people’s onion buying habits. It certainly doesn’t take 2 minutes though.

Arnia · 24/01/2022 23:15

Lots of things are quick to do but combined it all adds up so that's a pointless arguement. You're still saving time by not doing the thing when there's a perfectly acceptable, more convenient alternative.

Price comparable actually, frozen onions and peppers, make a midweek fajita enjoyable rather than a slog of chopping.
Plastic bag gets recycled, similar size and material to plastic bag the fresh onions are packaged in.
No guilt over making life easier here.

Lalliella · 24/01/2022 23:54

I can’t bear to touch them, I have an intolerance of raw onions. I always buy the ready chopped version. YANBU

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 24/01/2022 23:57

I have a mini chopper, absolute game changer and was cheap too!
You can whizz anything in it from chopping onions to making pesto and it takes seconds. Easy to clean too

Frozen chopped onions all the way
