To think life is too short to slice onions

Spaghetti for dinner. DH bought whole onions. Sob.

AIBU to think ready made sliced onions are a marvellous invention? And never buy whole onions again?

I have hypermobility and dyspraxia.
I buy all sorts of vegetables frozen and pre chopped.

I tried to chop a melon recently but then the knife got stuck and DH took over chopping duties before I chopped my finger off Grin

HelpINeeedSomebody · 22/01/2022 17:17

Frozen chopped onions is one of the best inventions ever.

DSGR · 22/01/2022 17:17

Nope, I don’t get plastic bags unless I need to!

Lockheart · 22/01/2022 17:18

I checked Sainsbury's.

Loose whole white onions are 85p per kilo.

Diced white onion is £2.75 a kilo and sliced red onion £3.75 a kilo!!

You're paying 3-4 times as much!

userxx · 22/01/2022 17:19

I can't deal with onions at all, my eyes are sore for hours so I always buy pre-sliced. Life is too short.

I'm sorry I laughed at this! I too have hypermobility & know exactly what you mean 😉

Oneunslicedonion · 22/01/2022 17:20

Yes … but I save TIME! Grin

I agree it doesn’t take hours but it definitely doesn’t take me seconds … plus stinging eyes!

I didn't know you could even buy sliced onions. Yanbu

IncompleteSenten · 22/01/2022 17:20

They are easier I agree and I'd use them but I worry about the plastic. I try to reduce as much as possible and you can have whole onions loose without a bag.

ReginaaPhalange · 22/01/2022 17:20

I always buy frozen chopped onions and the same for peppers too!!

VelvetChairGirl · 22/01/2022 17:21

whats wrong with onions learn how to chop stuff

Mojoj · 22/01/2022 17:21

God yeah.

MrsClatterbuck · 22/01/2022 17:22

I use both. Frozen very handy to have. If having a BBQ then tubs of chopped onion is good but cooking for just dh and I then chop my own. The frozen peppers are the one I definitely use a lot unless for a salad.

NerrSnerr · 22/01/2022 17:22

I buy frozen pre chopped onions. I don't end up spending more because what I always do is buy a pack of 3 onions thinking I'll make 3 meals with them or chop the other 2 up. 3 weeks later I come back to the cupboard with 2 (or sometimes 3) sprouting onions and I need to buy more.

I know I should do better and I tell myself every time, but I don't. The same applies for garlic too (I buy the lazy garlic in a jar).

isthismylifenow · 22/01/2022 17:22

From a budget point of view how much does a bag of frozen onions cost compared to fresh onions?

We don't get them here so it's just out of curiosity really.

I do pay extra for a chopped butternut or pumpkin though.

tara66 · 22/01/2022 17:23

frozen hopped onions

Ah, we cross posted.
Tinkywinkydinkydoo · 22/01/2022 17:23

Wet a cloth or paper towel and place it on the chopping board when cutting onions, the cloth absorbs all of the onions fumes and no stingy eyes!

Thehop · 22/01/2022 17:24

@Momicrone

Does pre- grated cheese offend people as much
Yes, it contains cardboard. That’s why it doesn’t stick together like normal grated cheese.
JellyBabiesSaveLives · 22/01/2022 17:25

Yup, frozen chopped onions & garlic, grated cheese. It may only take seconds, but it takes quite a lot of them and then there’s the washing up - more seconds.

If you don’t do all the things people think you should do because “it only takes a minute”, you end up with quite a bit of time to spend on things you actually like doing.

Momicrone · 22/01/2022 17:25

If you can afford it, the money doesn't matter, especially if it improves your quality of life

isthismylifenow · 22/01/2022 17:26

Frozen peppers?

Don't they go all soggy?
Why does this just not seem right to me 😂

Hugasauras · 22/01/2022 17:26

YANBU. I always have frozen chopped onion in. I'm all for improving quality of life Grin

Hugasauras · 22/01/2022 17:27

Oh and yes also have frozen chopped garlic!

OfstedOffred · 22/01/2022 17:27

I don't buy things like this because they invariably require totally unnecessary plastic packaging.

Onions can be bought loose, zero plastic.

Pre-chopped fruit and veg always comes in plastic trays and bags, it's a completely pointless use of single use plastic.
