To think life is too short to slice onions

Spaghetti for dinner. DH bought whole onions. Sob.

AIBU to think ready made sliced onions are a marvellous invention? And never buy whole onions again?

Pre-grated cheese is bearable, if you are going to melt it during cooking of a pizza or toasted sandwich, but it would be horrible on a cold sandwich. It's hard and rubbery, presumably because of being exposed to air for an extended period.

Pre-slicing or pre-grating anything risks the quality, unless it's somehow immediately packed in a way that excludes all air.

I buy coffee powder, rather than grind my own beans, and I know this means I'm not getting the same quality, but I tell myself that the powder being very fine and tightly packed means it should not be too degraded by contact with air.

Just a point for the eco folk. Some of us are physically unable to chop veg and whilst we would prefer sustainable packaowe have fewer choices.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 23/01/2022 12:30

I’m also happy to be called lazy - is not an insult. I have 3dc and a full time job. I choose where to direct my energies and chopping onions is not on that list Grin

DSGR · 23/01/2022 12:49

@Gilead in which case, buy them in a bag of course. The rest of us can at least try to cut plastic

OverByYer · 23/01/2022 12:53

Frozen chopped onions are great with tuna mayonnaise and help keep your sandwiches cool until lunchtime.

Tumbleweed101 · 23/01/2022 12:57

I got these as a substitute in my shopping in lockdown. Often buy them now for the freezer as it sometimes gives me the extra push I need after a long day to do a home made meal rather than use full convenience food. Tipping them into the pan and getting that nice smell instantly can make a difference. I hate cooking after a long day at work. I do have whole fresh onions for when I have more time and motivation.

ThePrionOne · 23/01/2022 13:01

I buy pre-caramelised onions! They’re fabulous. However they don’t sell raw chopped onions where I live, so if I want uncaramelised onions, I have to chop them.

If I was still in the UK, I’d likely buy pre-chopped as then (as now) I had more spare money than I had spare time.

WeAllHaveWings · 23/01/2022 13:13

I have a problem with dry eyes and slicing onions can be very painful. I chop into quarters and use a hand chopper something like this instead.

OhWhyNot · 23/01/2022 13:19

I use frozen onions (unless a fresh onion is needed)

Along with frozen garlic, shallots, chilli, ginger, basil, sage, rosemary, Thai mix, green beans, spinach, mash, peas and broad beans

For me it’s saves money in long run but pricey to buy all together and saves time the herbs especially are great (when fresh ones not needed) and the green beans and spinach much better value

JackieWeaversZoomAc · 23/01/2022 13:23

This is why we are drowning in plastic rubbish.

JustJam4Tea · 23/01/2022 13:23

@Momicrone

Does pre- grated cheese offend people as much
Yep. It doesn’t taste as nice.
etulosba · 23/01/2022 13:25

People saying it takes seconds… no it doesn’t and it causes discomfort of stinging eyes.

Luckily, I have the time and they don’t make my eyes sting.

JackieWeaversZoomAc · 23/01/2022 13:27

And a block of Cheese is also packaged in plastic. Though I notice they are using less these days.

I wear glasses and it really does protect the eyes when chopping onions. It has to be a really 👿 bad ass onion to make me cry.

Flutterflybutterby · 23/01/2022 13:30

Yanbu.

I've never heard of presliced onions either, but would totally buy a lifetime's supply of them if I saw them!

BurntO · 23/01/2022 13:37

I wouldn’t even consider an able bodied adult needing pre chopped onions tbh. Ask him to chop them if you can’t…

WonderfulYou · 23/01/2022 13:39

I voted YABU as I’ve never heard of them.

I actually hate cutting onions as my eyes water and then my nose starts so it takes longer as I keep needing to get a tissue and wash my hands.

However pre-sliced onions don’t sit right with me for some reason.

I am thinking of getting a slicer though where it slices anything really quickly.

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 23/01/2022 13:40

Plastic waste springs to mind.

WonderfulYou · 23/01/2022 13:41

I wonder if you brought onions, chopped and froze them it would work the same?

This would definitely save me a lot of time and hassle during the week.

Franticbutterfly · 23/01/2022 13:53

I chop loads in the mini food process and freeze them in a ziplock.

OhWhyNot · 23/01/2022 13:55

Frozen packet of spinach lasts 4/5 meals fresh 1 meal maybe 2

Frozen packet of green beans 8 meals (at least) fresh 2

Frozen onions 8-10 meals

The frozen herbs 10-15 meals, same with garlic (boxes are recycled)

I’m not so sure of the plastic argument unless you walk to the corner shop to buy fresh ingredients packed in paper bags

WeAllHaveWings · 23/01/2022 14:14

I have tried chopping onions with sunglasses on before (great look 😎) to see if it helped but no luck. My eyes still stream 😭and I end up over the kitchen sink flushing them out with cold water to try to stop the stinging. Some people just have drier eyes that others and it can be really uncomfortable.
cafedesreves · 23/01/2022 14:15

Yes absolutely love them! I see them as a "treat" item!

Belledan1 · 23/01/2022 14:35

Put the Swede in the microwave pierced as it is. Once gone softish easy to chop and peel. I do buy sliced cheese for DS. Makes lots of toasties and cheese rolls. Just less mess lol.

Simonjt · 23/01/2022 14:48

I don’t pre-chopped/slices veg, its more expensive and requires additional plastic.

They are good however for people who are unable to prepare veg.

DwangelaForever · 23/01/2022 14:49

I got a chopper off amazon and it takes 2 seconds to dice my onions, best purchase ever.
