Spaghetti for dinner. DH bought whole onions. Sob.

AIBU to think ready made sliced onions are a marvellous invention? And never buy whole onions again?

YANBU!

I now grate my onions for pasta dishes so DS4 doesn’t have a melt down and I don’t have to keep picking onion bits out of his pasta. Life’s too short for chopping onions.

MilduraS · 22/01/2022 20:59

It's my DH's job to slice the onions Grin very rare for it to be my job but when it is, I wear swimming goggles to avoid the tears. I couldn't bring myself to buy pre chopped when whole onions cost pence.

PugInTheHouse · 22/01/2022 21:45

I always buy frozen chopped onions, they are cheap and no wastage as I just use what I need. I also buy frozen peppers for stuff like spag bol. I would use fresh peppers for salad etc though.

I pretty much always buy pre cut veg, except carrots, they are easy to cut and I like them unpeeled.

Sgtmajormummy · 23/01/2022 08:43

Think about the VAT.
In order for us to have the convenience of not cutting onions, they’ve gone up two categories.
Where I live it’s from 4% (fresh produce) to 20% (luxury).

Sorry, if I’m cutting onions I’m usually cutting something else and that money can stay in MY pocket.

Belledan1 · 23/01/2022 08:49

I use frozen onions, peppers and garlic. Do have fresh for salads etc. My favourite cheat food if frozen mash. I do do fresh too but its great for quickness and if I make a cottage pie and not enough mash.

granny24 · 23/01/2022 09:32

I used to cook professionally and did the sums for fresh versus frozen. There was zero waste with frozen and the cost without taking time into account was so little it didn’t matter. There are periods in the year when there is quite a lot of waste with the fresh ones, and you can use the precise amount your recipes indicate.

WutheringTights · 23/01/2022 09:33

Frozen pre-chopped onions are brilliant. I agree, life's too short to chop onions. Others can if they wish, but it's pre-chopped all the way for me. There's no moral superiority in creating more work for yourself and there's no real difference in the onions either. Grin

SuspiciousScully · 23/01/2022 09:35

Honestly, I think life is too short to buy/eat onions full stop.

Vile things!

OverByYer · 23/01/2022 09:35

I agree OP.
I have bags of frozen chopped onions.

OverByYer · 23/01/2022 09:37

I also use frozen chopped garlic and frozen soffrito.
I think its less wasteful.
When I used to buy onions, id normally use one and the rest would slowly go off in the cupboard.

Besswess88 · 23/01/2022 09:38

Frozen onions are so soggy.

If you cut off the ends (top and bottom) of the onion very last you won’t cry.

Frazzled2207 · 23/01/2022 09:38

Yabu because the pre sliced ones will almost certainly come in some kind of plastic

It takes less than 30 secs with a good knife.

burnoutbabe · 23/01/2022 09:41

@ReginaaPhalange

I always buy frozen chopped onions and the same for peppers too!!
Yep same. They are around £1 each at Iceland and means never having to worry about peppers going off (onions don't but may do once you have used half)
femfemlicious · 23/01/2022 09:43

I HATE frozen pepper. All slimy and floppy. I love my peppers chrunchy. Takes 30secs to chop. Same with onions. Funny enough i dont even cry with onions amymore
..i feel no effects

CounsellorTroi · 23/01/2022 09:49

If I’m doing something that requires onions my DH chops them for me. Or sometimes I’ll use the food processor if it’s something like stuffing.

kungfupannda · 23/01/2022 09:50

Frozen chopped onions all the way. I cook most meals from scratch and grow my own veg, so quite happy to do the prep work. But frozen onions have been a game changer in terms of time saving. And I no longer have streaming eyes.

Saltisford · 23/01/2022 10:07

I buy frozen pre-chopped as I cry my eyes out every time I slice an onion! They are very convenient. Also pre chopped garlic as this saves on your hands and utensils smelling to high heaven

ShippingNews · 23/01/2022 10:09

Frozen chopped onions were a game changer for me. Cheap, easy, no waste,

Beebopbopbopbopbop · 23/01/2022 10:14

I hate slicing onions but I find the frozen ones are always diced too small. And the fresh diced is always a waste.

MintyGreenDream · 23/01/2022 10:18

I use chopped frozen onions most of the time

etulosba · 23/01/2022 10:22

I actually enjoy slicing onions.

Plus, I too tight to pay somebody else to do such a simple task for me.

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/01/2022 10:34

@LondonQueen

I buy everything ready-choppedGrin
Me too!
bumblingbovine49 · 23/01/2022 10:42

My eyes have always burnt and hurt when I chop onions. Sometimes unbearably so . I use pre chopped frozen onions wherever possible

Octomore · 23/01/2022 11:02

You know that both hands and utensils are washable, right?

Neither my hands or utensils smell, because I wash them after use.
