DD has been told she's saying it wrong - may be both as used in different places?

OP posts:
Mamanyt · 23/01/2022 17:38

I think it is going to depend on where you are from. I've never seen it NOT rhyme with "zone" here in the US, but I could easily be wrong.

Aurelia53 · 23/01/2022 17:40

Rhymes with Sean. And if you're in Scotland, it definitely does not rhyme with horn, corn or shorn. That's why he's called Sean (shorn) the sheep!

pollymere · 23/01/2022 17:46

The teacher is an idiot. Shone is shh-on. I suspect the teacher is assuming the split di-graph makes the o it's alphabet sound not it's phonics one. (Magic E to the rest of us). Like whether it's sk-on or sk-own (scone). However as shown is a word in its own right and shone is an exception word for magic E, the teacher is incorrect in this instance.

pinkpirlie · 23/01/2022 17:46

I had friends with the name Shone and they pronounced it as in zone, cone, etc.
But as a word, like the "sun shone", it would most definitely rhyme with gone, con, etc.

crazyjinglist · 23/01/2022 17:49

The teacher is an idiot. Shone is shh-on.

No, the teacher is an American. 'Shone' rhymes with 'stone' in some American accents. She is wrong to tell the OP's dd that her pronunciation is incorrect though. So actually she might be an American and an idiot. Or just a bit ignorant.

crazyjinglist · 23/01/2022 17:51

Rhymes with Sean

Depends. In my accent it doesn't. Sean has a long 'aw' and 'shone' has a short 'o'.

petelacey · 23/01/2022 17:52

Doesn't rhyme with either of those words.
Shone, one, won, none, con, don, gone, homme, pomme, Ron,.

Salome61 · 23/01/2022 17:59

That's an interesting link, who knew they pronounced it like that in the US!

godmum56 · 23/01/2022 18:01

@SleepingStandingUp

Neither.

Dawn, Horn, Lawn
Zone, Phone, Moan
Shone, Gone, One,

fine except that one (wun) doesn't rhyme with shone or gone
Loreleigh · 23/01/2022 18:02

Neither of the examples you've given - I'm with those who say Shone rhymes with gone or upon

Dawn would sound like Shawn/Shorne
Zone would sound like shown

keffie12 · 23/01/2022 18:02

Shone doesn't rhyme with either.

It rhymes with
Gone
None

PassiveAggressive · 23/01/2022 18:11

Con!

Sizzer40 · 23/01/2022 18:14

Neither! It Depends on your accent but in mine it rhymes with gone/con/on.

DonaPatrizia · 23/01/2022 18:14

Neither!

Supergirl1958 · 23/01/2022 18:16

Neither..

Shone is pronounced sh-o-n as in John..

Dawn is pronounced d-or-n as in born

And zone is pronounced z-oa-n as in bone....

lookforthesun · 23/01/2022 18:19

Neither HmmConfused

It rhymes with gone or con

simiisme · 23/01/2022 18:21

@Thethingswedoforlove

Neither/ it rhymes with gone
This is correct.
Mere1 · 23/01/2022 18:28

No. Neither.

tkwal · 23/01/2022 18:29

Shone rhymes with gone and scone, where I live anyway (hope that doesn't set any cats amongst pigeons)

Fluffmum · 23/01/2022 18:38

Neither shone rhymes with Don

crosstalk · 23/01/2022 18:43

Isn't one wan in the Midlands?

Will google rhotic.

Will also google upper class UK accents. Not just droppin g at the end of words (huntin, shootin, fishin) but some of their strangulated vowels. I remember some elderly friends saying "Ai've" for "I've" and "gull" for "girl". To say nothing of quait naice. But they could all have been Hyacinth Bucket.

Thank the Lord for regional accent hold outs.

And it may be urban myth, but some of Shakespeare's "jokes" only apparently work with a West Virginia accent.

But I was always slightly sad I got a US best man to read a biblical text with the word "mirror".

Mrschristmasqueen · 23/01/2022 18:51

HRTFT but Yorkshire here and shone is like gone which, to us, is like one (not won). So I would say wan, two, three not won, two, three. And scone is definitely as in cone!

Evan456 · 23/01/2022 19:08

In a poem it doesn’t have to

Harmonypuss · 23/01/2022 19:20

Not understanding all this... 'one rhymes with gun' twaddle.

Queen's English... one rhymes with gone, con, etc.

Mollymoostoo · 23/01/2022 19:24

@Thethingswedoforlove

Neither/ it rhymes with gone
Exactly. Shown rhymes with zone, yawn rhymes with Dawn.
