DD has been told she's saying it wrong - may be both as used in different places?

OP posts:
Flowersandhearts · 22/01/2022 18:47

In RP/standard English it rhymes with 'on'.

Catswhisky · 22/01/2022 18:47
@Catswhisky yes! because Shawn and prawn, shorn and torn rhyme for me!

You rhyme shone, one and gone and I rhyme shone and scone and one and fun Grin
Which leads to the question how are you saying scone. Do we dare start that one?

NiceTwin · 22/01/2022 18:55

How the hell does shone and one rhyme?

This is fascinating how people must hear things differently as I have never heard shone pronounced as one would be. I have lived in the South, the Midlands and now the North.

Where on earth do these shone/one rhymers live?

MasterBeth · 22/01/2022 18:55

@Montecristocount

Interesting that so many people say one as ‘wun.’ I’ve never heard anyone say it this way, it’s always rhymed with con here.
I never understand posts like this. You have surely heard people with different accents speaking? Have you never met someone from a different part of Britain? Do you never watch TV or listen to the radio?
alexdgr8 · 22/01/2022 18:57

it rhyme with on.
with a sh in front.
shon.

All those places!

I don't think this is purely regional as none of us from the same regions can agree.

nevergoesaway · 22/01/2022 19:00

@bintang I’m a huge fan of that Aimee Mann song and have listened to it countless times. I’ve ALWAYS heard it as “WONN”. I just listened to it now and I’m now hearing her sing “WUNN”! This is so weird 🤪

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 22/01/2022 19:01

@catswhisky Bar fights have started over less probably Wink

Scone and gone

MasterBeth · 22/01/2022 19:01

@PuppyMonkey

I’m now merrily listening to pop songs with ONE in the lyrics and I’ve yet to hear a single WUN pronunciation. It’s all one to rhyme with gone.

Another one bites the dust.
One night in Bangkok.
Real Wild Child.

Hours of fun anyway.

Fun not rhyming with one, obviously.
Grin

Surely this depends on how you pronounce WUN…
alexdgr8 · 22/01/2022 19:04

is this going to rise the thorny pork/fork dispute.
people all over uk, and farther ?, muttering to themselves on trains, with furrowed brows; pork pork pork fork fork.

I agree. So how are we getting Shaun and shorn differently? I’m very confused!

In answer to pp about where people live I’m in Yorkshire and it’s shone/one/gone/scone

What is this dispute? How can they be different????
PuppyMonkey · 22/01/2022 19:08

@MasterBeth - I’m alluding to all the PPs who are saying it’s the same pronunciation as won (who are all batshitGrin)

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 22/01/2022 19:22

Im baffled @Catswhisky, here’s my Shawn and shorn voca.ro/17CDdCFIhLbS

I pronounce both Shawn and Shorn like the first example in that clip.

crazyjinglist · 22/01/2022 19:39

Ok I took a break from this and am now a glass or two of wine to the good. So I was thinking of settling back into the thread with a relaxed attitude....

And then @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack ( - hi Flavia) has to go and bring scones into the mix Shock . That's fighting talk. Scones always cause trouble.

You rhyme shone, one and gone and I rhyme shone and scone and one and fun

I don't even know where to start with that...

gone, scone and shone rhyme (with don)
one and fun rhyme

Catswhisky · 22/01/2022 19:46

Thelittleweasel · 22/01/2022 19:47

Dawn = shorn! [Sorry]

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 22/01/2022 19:52

It's funny that you and LizBennet rhyme it with different ones catswhisky Smile keeps things interesting.

We can take this outside crazy except that I have to wrestle DS2 into bed now and he and DS1 are hiding out with nerf guns to avoid this fate. I may be some time.

ph-oh-n (phone)
l-oh-n (lone)
sc-oh-n (scone)

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 22/01/2022 20:17

Hang on, I think I worded my post badly
I don't mean one, fun, gone, scone and shone all rhyme with each other, I mean in sets. So the same as crazy
one and fun rhyme
gone, shone and scone rhyme

lavender2022 · 22/01/2022 20:18

@Thethingswedoforlove

Neither/ it rhymes with gone
This
HunterHearstHelmsley · 22/01/2022 20:18

@crazyjinglist

I’ve only ever rhymed one with gone and can’t imagine saying it as ‘wun’ unless I was putting on an accent!*

But surely the fact that you would say 'wun' if you were putting on an accent means that you are aware that it's pronounced 'wun' in different accents? Confused

In the interest of research, I just watched the beginning of Chesney Hawkes singing 'The One and Only' and he definitely sings 'wun'. Like most pop stars he sings in a vaguely American accent anyway, and no American I've ever heard rhymes 'one' with 'gone'!

I've just gone to listen to this, I love it and listen to it a lot anyway Grin

To me, he's 💯 saying one to rhyme with gone. It's not that mind blowing that people say things differently but it is mind blowing that we're each using the same thing as evidence of different things.

Also interesting that you say he sings with a vaguely American accent. I particularly like it because he pronounces can't properly. Ha.
