DD has been told she's saying it wrong - may be both as used in different places?

These threads need audio!

Yes, we could all record ourselves! But it still wouldn't work. I'm now convinced that even though I say 'wun', some posters would hear it as rhyming with 'gone'. I'd be intrigued to find out if I also heard their 'o' as a 'u' though!

Elsie2211 · 22/01/2022 16:53

Gone

ABitOfAShitShow · 22/01/2022 16:57

@Thethingswedoforlove

Neither/ it rhymes with gone
Agree.
phoenixrosehere · 22/01/2022 17:00

Neither

Shone rhymes with own

StrawberrySanta · 22/01/2022 17:02

One is pronounced won in my world. Can't believe people say it's wun!

LizzieAnt · 22/01/2022 17:03

Surely the pronunciation of 'gone' also varies depending on accent, so people arguing whether 'one' or 'shone' rhymes with it is a bit pointless?

I always like a bit of audio, though I realise how we hear words can differ too.

Also, thanks @mathanxiety. I hadn't realised that Shaun the Sheep was a pun (in some accents at least).

SleepingStandingUp · 22/01/2022 17:15
They pronounce won wrong to me. Won rhymes with done. I done gone won a bun. All rhyme.

Grin

I’m more confused than ever now.

bintang · 22/01/2022 17:27

@crazyjinglist

I’ve only ever rhymed one with gone and can’t imagine saying it as ‘wun’ unless I was putting on an accent!*

But surely the fact that you would say 'wun' if you were putting on an accent means that you are aware that it's pronounced 'wun' in different accents? Confused

In the interest of research, I just watched the beginning of Chesney Hawkes singing 'The One and Only' and he definitely sings 'wun'. Like most pop stars he sings in a vaguely American accent anyway, and no American I've ever heard rhymes 'one' with 'gone'!

Aimee Mann singing "One" (the Harry Nilsson song) Says 'wonn is the loneliest number'
aSofaNearYou · 22/01/2022 17:40

@crazyjinglist

In the one I posted, the example in the sentence about Chinese sounds more accurate to the "o" sound I use and am used to than the singular word does. The one in the sentence is 100% an "o" sound, not an "u".

To me it's 100% an 'u', which agrees with the phonetic alphabet rendering of it. If it were an 'o', the phonetic symbol would be a backwards a, which is the symbol for the sound 'o' as in 'gone'.

I'm not disputing that that might have been the original or proper pronunciation, just that I don't actually hear people say it that way and generally do hear "won". If it's said in a rushed manner or in the middle of a sentence the lines blur a bit and people might say "wun", but any time it has been said with any degree of emphasis I have definitely heard an "o" sound.

Shone rhymes with Zone. Hth Grin

CailleachGranda · 22/01/2022 17:43

@Bahhhhhumbug

One and gone do rhyme, don't understand why people saying they don't. They both end in the 'on' sound. I have a relative with a strong cockney accent though and he says 'gone' as 'goan'. Apart from that never heard it said any other way except to rhyme with one
You genuinely don't understand?
CailleachGranda · 22/01/2022 17:52

@Catlover77

One and gone absolutely rhyme. Only speaking RP would one sound like wun
Not really. I certainly don't speak RP and wun and one are identical
QueBarbaridad · 22/01/2022 17:53

One, won and wun all sound identical in my accent.

You could only tell the difference by the context of the sentence.

Catswhisky · 22/01/2022 18:23

Catswhisky
Mind blown.

Shone, one, gone here. They’re spelt the same so find it weird they wouldn’t be said the same. Having said that one and won are the same sound to me.

Also struggling to make Shaun and shorn sound different.

Fascinating stuff.
I’m fascinated, since I’m the opposite and can’t make them sound the same, do you reckon we pronounce any of them the same or would my Shawn not sound like either your Shawn or shorn? Thereby making it even more complicated grin

Oh hell now you’ve thrown me @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack
So my Shaun and shorn would sound like prawn or torn, but your prawn and torn might not sound like my prawn and torn 🤷🏻‍♀️

Catswhisky · 22/01/2022 18:25

Bold fail in the middle there

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 22/01/2022 18:41

@Catswhisky yes! because Shawn and prawn, shorn and torn rhyme for me!

You rhyme shone, one and gone and I rhyme shone and scone and one and fun Grin
