DD has been told she's saying it wrong - may be both as used in different places?

@Toothsil

I'm so confused by the people saying "one" rhymes with gone!
But they do rhyme! Confused
stripeyflowers · 22/01/2022 15:25

Shone, gone, one.

Yes - one! Only ever rhymed one with gone. Never rhymed it with sun. Confused

Am from West Midland if that helps.

aSofaNearYou · 22/01/2022 15:25

But if you're thinking it's something to do with how people are hearing it, you probably have heard people say 'wun', you just haven't heard it as 'wun'!

Yes, but you could say the same in reverse and all the "wun" lot have been hearing people say it the other way for years! It isn't spelt that way, that's for sure...

OfstedOffred · 22/01/2022 15:29

My friend from derby wouldnt rhyme one and gone.

"One" would be a very short "wun", "gone" would be a longer sound, almost approaching "garn".

OfstedOffred · 22/01/2022 15:31

I'm sure I've heard that British English has a very very wide range of accent variation for the size of country. Eg we have as much variation within a country a third the size of Texas & a quarter the population, as they do in the US

crazyjinglist · 22/01/2022 15:33

I agree, the reverse is true. The spelling is pretty much irrelevant though. I mean - how do you pronounce the 'o' in woman, women, won etc? Besides, if you pronounced 'one' how it's spelled, why wouldn't it be just as likely to rhyme with phone?

On the subject of whether it's more to do with how we're hearing it, can anyone tell me if they hear this as wun?

dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/one

Because this sounds like how I say it and it definitely rhymes with gone to me.

That 100% rhymes with 'sun' to me. In fact even more so than most examples I've heard!

nevergoesaway · 22/01/2022 15:34

@crazyjinglist

I’ve only ever rhymed one with gone and can’t imagine saying it as ‘wun’ unless I was putting on an accent!*

But surely the fact that you would say 'wun' if you were putting on an accent means that you are aware that it's pronounced 'wun' in different accents? Confused

In the interest of research, I just watched the beginning of Chesney Hawkes singing 'The One and Only' and he definitely sings 'wun'. Like most pop stars he sings in a vaguely American accent anyway, and no American I've ever heard rhymes 'one' with 'gone'!

Yes I’m aware of other accents very much so, but it would be a very affected, posh accent if I said it like that. Not like anyone I know or my experience of tv and films. However like I say, I’m thinking maybe my hearing is messed up, or more accurately my Brian is skewed and biased and is interpreting it in a different way to how it’s been said!!

I listened again to Chesney, and it sometimes sounds like ‘wOn’ and sometimes like ‘wUn’ Grin

SleepingStandingUp · 22/01/2022 15:34

@crazyjinglist

Wun two three? wun two three???

Yes, wun two three! Perfectly normal!

Oh btw how do you pronounce 'won' - as in 'he won a prize'? Grin

He w-un a prize for being number w-on
nevergoesaway · 22/01/2022 15:34

My brain not Brian.

Plantstrees · 22/01/2022 15:35

Shone, one, gone, won and scone all rhyme for me on the English south coast with what is usually considered a posh accent.

Pemba · 22/01/2022 15:35

@aSofaNearYou yes on that clip I hear the speaker saying 'one' to rhyme with 'gone'. And she has a fairly posh Southern accent. Do other people hear something different?

aSofaNearYou · 22/01/2022 15:37

@crazyjinglist

Yes I agree spelling can be somewhat moot, but given there's no decisive answer to which is the "right" way, it does tip the favour a little to me. It's quite bizarre for that letter to have anything to do with an "u" sound.

Interesting that you hear that as rhyming with sun, definitely shows that it is in the hearing that people are getting different answers.

crazyjinglist · 22/01/2022 15:38

That's very interesting! I'm guessing that's because English developed over a much longer time from Anglo Saxon and other languages and dialects in the British Isles, whereas English and other languages spoken in the US were 'imported' fully-formed much later? Maybe.

cafedesreves · 22/01/2022 15:39

Rhymes with don, gone, con, John

cafedesreves · 22/01/2022 15:40

Shorn (as in sheep) is a different sound from "shone" where I am.

user1473878824 · 22/01/2022 15:40

This is how it’s pronounced.

@Phrowzunn

😂 I can’t cope with people thinking ‘horn’ and ‘corn’ rhyme with ‘dawn’..?! Also, in what universe does ‘one’ rhyme with ‘gone’?!
In mine - mix of north west (Liverpool/Lancashire), Devon, and estuary from my London-born DH Grin

I don't pronounce one and won the same. Won is more like wun. One is more like wan.

EeeICouldRipATissue · 22/01/2022 15:49
