DD has been told she's saying it wrong - may be both as used in different places?

@SleepingStandingUp

Neither.

Dawn, Horn, Lawn
Zone, Phone, Moan
Shone, Gone, One,

This.
queenMab99 · 22/01/2022 08:41

I checked the online dictionary, and shone is pronounced slightly differently in America, which explains the confusion.

timestheyarechanging · 22/01/2022 08:42

It rhymes with gone

aSofaNearYou · 22/01/2022 08:47

I'm baffled by all the people acting like it's ridiculous to say "one" rhymes with "gone". Of course it does!

Obviously there are different accents out there but if you've ever watched TV, surely you are aware that in standard, southern "Queen's English", one rhymes with gone? Have you never heard them say "BBC1"? It doesn't sound anything like "gun".

Grilledaubergines · 22/01/2022 08:49

@Phrowzunn

😂 I can’t cope with people thinking ‘horn’ and ‘corn’ rhyme with ‘dawn’..?! Also, in what universe does ‘one’ rhyme with ‘gone’?!
They do for me. Though not one and gone.

Surely people grasp that accents mean different pronunciation and neither is wrong or right?

Bemoreatticus · 22/01/2022 08:49

This has been a very interesting thread.

I learned that shone (like gone in UK English) is pronounced like zone in US English.

The greatest thing is learning that my pronunciation of one as "wun" is not universal. Aren't accents wonderful!

heyitsthistle · 22/01/2022 08:50

Shone like gone. I'm from the south east.

My American DH pronounces it like zone

Actually in the south we would generally say one to they’re with sun. I’ve lived here all my life and have never heard from a fellow southerner (with all our many variations in accents) say one to rhyme with gone.
Grilledaubergines · 22/01/2022 08:53

And there’s no standard southern queens English by the way! You watch too much shit telly.

JolieJ · 22/01/2022 08:53

I'm Canadian and it rhymes with zone for me

KaptainKaveman · 22/01/2022 08:53

It's all about the accent and from where you hail. Northerners will pronounce their vowels broadly: therefore 'shone' will rhyme with 'gone' and 'lawn'. However, if you are a posh Southerner like me 'lawn' and 'torn' do not rhyme with 'shone'. In my accent 'shone' rhymes with 'on'.
'The star shone on and on' - rhymes.
'There was a faun on the lawn at dawn' - rhymes.
'Bone/tone/zone/' - rhymes.

aSofaNearYou · 22/01/2022 08:53

@crazyjinglist

Do people really say BBC wun?

Of course. Standard RP and SE English pronunciation. And US. Almost everyone I met or knew before I moved north said 'wun'. And presumably the BBC itself always called it BBC Wun until it started employing more presenters with regional accents!

I'm from the SE and have never heard a single person say "wun", nor have I ever heard it on the TV. I think this might be from a more specific part of the country than the people who say it realise.

Grilledaubergines · 22/01/2022 08:56

One is pronounced won in s/east. Seriously one and gone are not pronounced the same here. It’s won and gone is like con

I'm Northern. Whilst shone does rhyme with gone (and one), lawn doesn't rhyme with them. (Lorrrn)

I just don’t get that. I’m almost 50 and have been here my whole life. I can’t imagine what you’re hearing really. It’s just not a south east accent to say it the way you describe!

Well we're at a stalemate then, because I have never heard anyone say that and am also from the south east (I'm from Oxford). Every person I have ever heard say it have rhymed it with gone.
FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 22/01/2022 08:58

I'm can't get get my head around the Shaun the Sheep statement more than anything on this thread.

I'm trying to make Shaun sound like shorn and failing. What accents does it work in?

LizBennet · 22/01/2022 08:59

Shaun sounds like Shorn here in Manchester.

Grilledaubergines · 22/01/2022 08:59

Someone will come on in a minute and say spanner rhymes with potato, in Kent.

I'm hearing it like... everyone says it. Seriously, stick BBC1 on and you will hear people rhyming one with gone and won't need to imagine it anymore.

Shorn rhymes with Dawn.

Shone rhymes with neither of your words OP

They don’t, but ok.
