Just curious 🤨

often no Windows, lacks ventilation. A fan isn't really as good as opening a window and getting fresh air - mine has a huge skylight window, and a extractor fan.
adjacent to bedroom is a room where people piss and shit hard to explain our lay out but the door to the en suite open adjacent the door to the room, in the oh there a short kind of ‘hall’ which then opens up into the room itself, so it doesn’t feel like it’s really in the bedroom.
waste of space, would rather have added bedroom area our bedrooms of good size, wouldn’t need any bigger - we also have lots of storage in eaves.. eves? A room that extends across the length of the house for storage than than your in the roof 😂

But then we’re moving from a house that only has one toilet/bathroom.. and we’ve all not long had norovirus where at it’s worst we had to put DD’s potty outside the bathroom door.. not for DD’s use.

I can’t bloody wait to have three separate toilets in our house 😂😂😂
extra cleaning there is always this.. 😂
find it tacky, reminds me of a hotel why are hotels tacky?

Sounds like this user just got unlucky with their en suite. Ours is lovely,

limitedperiodonly · 21/01/2022 12:10

They mostly have exactly the same loo as other bathrooms...?

@JeffThePilot not always. How blessed you are never to have encountered the Saniflo Shit-Munching Sanitation System. People, often not very reputable builders and estate agents, insist it is the perfect solution to not being able to fit a proper sewage pipe to the en-suite you desire because it is crammed in the corner away from the main sewage pipe.

They don't mention the moment it inevitably clogs and fills the bedroom with the stench of shit and sometimes actual shit on the floor requiring someone to try to fix it. Plumbers are made of strong stuff but I wouldn't blame one for saying his diary was full for weeks.

Wam90 · 21/01/2022 12:10

I hate that I don’t have one but know that if I did I’d just be complaining about having another to clean 🤷🏼‍♀️ (Still want one though!)

User387598621 · 21/01/2022 12:13

One of those shit munching thing would quite useful in the outhouse where only DH ventures, he could do his daily shit in there then

Lifeisaminestrone · 21/01/2022 12:14

No number 2s are allowed in ours!

Ours is ok, it is down a corridor in our bedroom.

BestZebbie · 21/01/2022 12:18

I strongly dislike ensuites, which I didn’t realise until we had one - the thing I really really hate is that my DH leaves the door open all the time unless in use so I can see a (fairly close by) toilet from my bed, which is supposed to be a comfortable, soft, clean, sleeping/relaxing/sexy space, not a bleachable, smelly, germy place.
It feels to me like we are just weeing in a pot in the corner of the bedroom when we use it, which feels dirty and uncivilised.
In the same vein, I definitely do not want to be lying in my bed and be able to hear or smell someone shitting a couple of metres away!! Just as I wouldn’t want an en-suite right off the dining room next to the dinner table, for the same reason.

dreamkitchenhelp · 21/01/2022 12:18

Love all 4 of my en-suites. Lovely when people come to stay they have their own space. I also have loo brushes and bins in a bathroom as well so very non-MN!

Wouldn't be without one or two.....

Fifiesta · 21/01/2022 12:19

Every situation is different.
In our *’80’s built, three bed bungalow, the en-suite IS the main bathroom. It also has a small shower room and a separate cloakroom for guests /family.

*Think the builder had sat on old plans for almost two decades it has a late sixties/ early 70’s vibe about it…

sweetbutapshyco · 21/01/2022 12:22

Depends on the ensuite and the layout. I used to like them but I don't like the ones that open directly in the room. I have seen some in Pakistani houses where they are build that there is a slight hallway infront of the ensuite and the door opens in it instead of directly where the bed it. I also don't like it when someone has a dodge stomach and they can stink up the room as well.

spongbob · 21/01/2022 12:23

Those of you who have inconsiderate husbands who are unable to close the bathroom door after doing a shit should have a problem with your disgusting husbands, not en suites!

Regardless, ensuites without windows are still unpleasant. Poo stinks (for all of us), there will be steam. Sometimes you just want some fresh air in there.

Impractical and gimmicky. Me people see en-suite in new builds and think it's fancy and they're getting more for their money but it's better to just have a proper bathroom

Gwenhwyfar · 21/01/2022 12:24

I've been to a few flats where the ensuite is the only bathroom. It's really not ideal that guests have to go through the bedroom to use the toilet or if someone is staying overnight they have to disrupt their host to use the toilet and then suffer a lack of privacy as the ensuite is more or less in the host's bedroom.

Well that's lucky you live in a giant house. Most houses and flats in the U.K. are small and there's not physically the space to have a window or even a skylight so🤷🏻‍♀️

Am extra bedroom is a lot more useful and valuable than an en-suite (not even second bathroom, but one specifically for the occupants of that room)

lorrainecleaver · 21/01/2022 12:26

I love mine. It has no window and painted in a dark colour but is super luxurious inside. I could spend hours in there just doing my eyebrows or waxing, with the radio on. Love that I don't have to share with frequent guests too.

spongbob · 21/01/2022 12:27

@Spreadingtheword

It's tacky in the same way it would be to have any unnecessary feature for the sake of bragging about it

EdithStourton · 21/01/2022 12:29

I never understand the reasoning behind shoehorning in an en suite in a new build so that you end up with a minute third bedroom. New builds all seem to come with a downstairs loo anyway. It just baffles me.

And I know it's not sour grapes as we could have a really big en suite in this house, but chose to have a huge family bathroom instead.

Worldwide2 · 21/01/2022 12:29

I used to have one and I really didn't like it because there was no window so the steam from the shower couldn't be aired out and would be in your bedroom. Plus the obvious of going to toilet and any smells wafting into your bedroom just not nice. Found mine really small and would have rather had that space as storage. I was so excited when I moved in aswell because I thought they were great. Definitely changed my mind.
However I have stayed in places with an en suit with a bath and window. Much more space and with the window much better. So for me depends really.

TollgateDebs · 21/01/2022 12:29

No problem with properly designed en-suites, so Jack / Jill doors work well for example, with bathrooms that act as you'd expect, with room to move, well ventilated, window access. I don't like the en-suite, squeezed in, plumbing approach, where a walk-in wardrobe would have been more use for example.

You think people have an en suite just to brag about it….?!

What other features of a house are for bragging only, out of interest?

TheMarmaladeYears · 21/01/2022 12:33

Depends on the en-suite. I've got a bathroom literally right next to my bedroom so there's questionable point in losing bedroom space. I also have facilities downstairs too. But I see nothing wrong in well ventilated and well designed en suite facilities. It's just that I don't see many of them. Friends had an already small bedroom which wasn't at all enhanced by the en-suite (which looked like the sort of plastic cubicle you'd get in a caravan) crammed into a corner of it. You literally took a shit at the bottom of their bed. Pointless given that their bathroom was next door. I wouldn't say there was any great consensus on MN either way though.

User387598621 · 21/01/2022 12:33

Properly designed ones in big enough houses are fine.

Many small new houses are bought by couples who probably don't need 3 toilets

Spreadingtheword · 21/01/2022 12:34

@spongbob my house isn’t massive by any means.. it’s an average 3 bed house. I am however lucky (I think) to live in a part of the country where houses are not like the likes of London, we live rurally and love it. But then our income is nothing like the likes of London either so are we lucky? I don’t know 😂

SusannaQueen · 21/01/2022 12:35

Ours is out of action at the moment and I'm kind of glad.
It's fine, not huge but has a big window and double shower. It's just DH gets up earlier than me, he's not the quietest and even with an open window the smell gets into the bedroom. We have a big bedroom too, so it's not squashed in, but I still prefer the bathroom to exit into a hallway.

“Sometimes you just want some fresh air in there”

Could I introduce you to a really novel concept called “a window”?

SusannaQueen · 21/01/2022 12:36

Having said all that, an ensuite in a guest room would be a bonus.

Kitchen island? Aga? Conservatory? Corner sofa? Patio? Separate room for x activity? Library?
