Just curious 🤨

Thanks to the people who suggested an adhesive battery light in the en suite. I will look into it but our tenancy agreement bans anything being stuck to any walls or surfaces (including painted wood and tiles!) so it's a bit limiting.

Can't wait to buy our own place and get away from all the rules and the en suite! Wink

"What other features of a house are for bragging only, out of interest?"

Kitchen island? Aga? Conservatory? Corner sofa? Patio? Separate room for x activity? Library?

Good point. Whenever I’m in Tesco and the shop assistant gives me my club card back, I always make sure to say “thanks…. Have a good day…. OH DID I MENTION I HAVE A CORNER SOFA??!!”
SallyWD · 21/01/2022 12:47

I love our en-suite. As long as we can afford it I'd always want to buy a house with an en-suite. We have lots of visitors staying and I love the fact I don't have to share a bathroom with them!

saltandpepper234 · 21/01/2022 12:50

I don’t massively feel the need for one although it’s always nice to have an extra bathroom. I think I would prefer it wasn’t attached to my bedroom though, feels like a hotel room and I wouldn’t want my DP taking a 💩 in there and making the bedroom stink or getting up for the loo in the night and waking me up

JeffThePilot · 21/01/2022 12:53

@limitedperiodonly

They mostly have exactly the same loo as other bathrooms...?

@JeffThePilot not always. How blessed you are never to have encountered the Saniflo Shit-Munching Sanitation System. People, often not very reputable builders and estate agents, insist it is the perfect solution to not being able to fit a proper sewage pipe to the en-suite you desire because it is crammed in the corner away from the main sewage pipe.

They don't mention the moment it inevitably clogs and fills the bedroom with the stench of shit and sometimes actual shit on the floor requiring someone to try to fix it. Plumbers are made of strong stuff but I wouldn't blame one for saying his diary was full for weeks.

Oh god. No, you’re right, my (former) en suites did not have these. Why would anyone do that? 🤢
MetricMs · 21/01/2022 12:55

@FirewomanSam

I love my en suite and find it hilarious that they’re regularly declared ‘vile’ on here. People seem to have an issue with the idea of ‘shitting in the bedroom’ which is just classic Mumsnet faux-horror over hygiene nonsense (see also: loo brushes)

I especially love that when we have visitors to stay we can keep our en-suite all to ourselves and it feels really private. I can’t imagine not having one!

Outdoor sofa?
HPLikecraft · 21/01/2022 13:07

We had a very small en-suite when we moved to our current house so we knocked into the adjacent bedroom and turned it into a mahoosive ensuite. I love it.

SpinsForGin · 21/01/2022 13:09

Could I introduce you to a really novel concept called “a window”?

Because that's always possible 🙄

If we were to add an en suite there is no conceivable way we could add a window.

RitaFires · 21/01/2022 13:13

I like an ensuite but it has to be done well with adequate ventilation and no saniflo. I have seen some squeezed in to the detriment of the bedroom space which is unfortunate.

There can be a kind of four Yorkshiremen snobbery against ensuites, that they're a weird modern extravagance but they've been fairly standard in new builds for quite a while now. I personally think a family home should have more than one toilet and shower just so there's minimal queueing necessary but it's very much to each their own.

Toomuch2do · 21/01/2022 13:14

When we moved in, our house had a loo and a basin in the corner of the main bedroom. Literally sitting in the bedroom.

I like things to be convenient, but that was a step too far!

spongbob · 21/01/2022 13:22

@CounsellorTroi

Yes that's the kind of thing. Imo a people with these features in their home will obviously be defensive because they paid money for their ensuites and islands but... yeah

Then it doesn’t sound like the space is big enough for an en suite at all!

Which is what people are mostly talking about. Shoehorning ensuites with no Windows or ventilation into small flats and new houses which would be better as extra bedroom space or even a cupboard

55Jumbo · 21/01/2022 13:23

Not only do I love mine, when we extend I'm going to put them in for the DC bedrooms! They're great.

Who on earth do you think people are bragging about this stuff to?!

I have a corner sofa because it fits the space well and is comfy. I have a kitchen island cos it came with the house. I have outdoor sofas cos we like to sit on the terrace in the summer….

The list goes on and on. It certainly isn’t for bragging rights, it’s because those things are useful and practical.

Snowiscold · 21/01/2022 13:28

I don’t think that people think they are a weird modern extravagance. It’s more that they are /can be badly designed and shoehorned in. I think having two bathrooms/shower rooms/loos in a house is good, but I don’t think they should be en suites.

crosstalk · 21/01/2022 13:42

I don't mind if it's ensuite or not. I'd just like a second loo and wash basin so we're not queuing up with legs crossed when someone is having a shower. Mind you, mine is a small home built in the 80s. Why it was considered a convenient family home (3 bed) even then I know not.

"What other features of a house are for bragging only, out of interest?"

When I decided to upgrade my loo brushes to silicon ones (I thought they might be more hygienic than the nylon-bristled kind) the man at the counter exclaimed “Ooh! Two loos, very posh”!” In a very loud voice, so it’s each to their own, I think - one man’s two loos is another woman’s wine cellar, so to speak!

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 21/01/2022 13:49

@Pyri my main bathroom doesn't have a window or my en suite. Ground floor apartment. Upstairs does but the ground floor ones just have extractor fans, they're not small bathrooms so I guess it was cheaper to build without windows

lagerandcigars · 21/01/2022 13:51

When do you live @spongbob that people are bragging about a conservatory, a patio or a corner sofa - the 1970's? Are they bragging about their Ford Cortina too?

SpinsForGin · 21/01/2022 13:52

Actually it is ..... but not all houses are detached and therefore have fewer external walls.

We live in a very spacious Victorian terrace. We've loads of space but it wouldn't be possible to put an en suite in the master bedroom and use an external wall so we could have a window.

I mean ... shock horror - all houses are different!!

If you have three bathrooms/shower rooms, would we be allowed an ensuite then? Are we allowed to be that selfish? Grin
SpinsForGin · 21/01/2022 13:54

Oh and we live in a conservation area so adding additional windows requires a very lengthy planning process which is likely to be rejected!

WhosThatBehindTheFlask · 21/01/2022 13:57

I love mine - but then I sleep in the nude and sometimes get up in the night for a wee.... Grin
