@ShirleyPhallus

Those of you who have inconsiderate husbands who are unable to close the bathroom door after doing a shit should have a problem with your disgusting husbands, not en suites!
Exactly.

I hate the ones in terraced houses where it's the only upstairs bathroom, only accessible to one bedroom. So the person in the other bedroom has to go through your room at night to use the toilet, it's a terrible floor plan.

DeepDown12 · 21/01/2022 11:46

I absolutely love ours. Would never consider buying a house without one. I can understand dislike if the design is forced, it is too small, not enough light and can't be aired (no windows) - but if well done - its the second most important thing about the bedroom.

honeylulu · 21/01/2022 11:47

I'm not a fan. Last time we moved on the wish list was two bathrooms, neither of which needed to be accessed from a bedroom. So hard to find. Almost all second bathrooms are an en suite. Finally found a house that fits the bill.

The main reason for not being keen on en suites is the fact that i wanted the bathrooms accessible to both kids and visitors. I don't want anyone tramping through my bedroom to use the shower because someone else is having a bath in the other bathroom.

Also agree they are often too small for comfort or make the bedroom too small. I like plenty of space for lounging and getting ready. Plus if one partner uses the toilet at night the flush might be disturbing. Nor do I want shower damp pervading into the bedroom.

Some people love them and fair enough. Given the amount of houses I have seen with them I am probably in the minority.

Exhausteddog · 21/01/2022 11:48

I don't understand the "using an ensuite in the night would wake up the other person" argument. If DH got up in the night I would wake up anyway because I'm a very light sleeper and turned on the ensuite bathroom light, that might wake me up....but if he was leaving the room to go to the main bathroom, when he opened the door to the landing, the light from there could just as easily wake me. I also get woken by the cat giving itself a wash (not in the ensuite!Wink) and my DD using the main bathroom in the night.

Neither of us generally go to the toilet in the night.

They are OK in bigger houses but not the 3 bed boxes on housing estates

lagerandcigars · 21/01/2022 11:51

We have 3 bathrooms and a clockroom - 2 are ensuite - load of choice on where you choose to do a poo! The master has a dressing room and an ensuite with a window and the bedroom is large enough to comfortably fit a super king and an armchair, I'm happy with it.

Bathrooms (and kitchens) in rentals and bathrooms in hotels can be very badly designed - I often think they stay like that because the people who designed the room don't live in it - but it's not the ensuite element that's the problem, it's just poor design.

RosesAndHellebores · 21/01/2022 11:53

I want to know why your MIL and you give it headspace. "MIL: I don't like them" "you: fine".

I use ours which is lovely, has windows and is adjacent to my dressing room. DH uses the family bathroom unless we have guests.

BunsyGirl · 21/01/2022 11:55

I love them but we have two en suites, one for us, one for the guest room plus a house bathroom. The next house move I would ideally like more en suites -
one for each of the kids. I also would like more than one downstairs WC.

katepilar · 21/01/2022 11:55

I find the original question a bit odd - obviously Mumsnet itself does not have an opinion and there will be people on here who like en-suites and people who dont.

What I dont understand is why is it a norm to have a toilet in the same room as bath or shower.

VanGoghsDog · 21/01/2022 11:55

@ThisIsStartingToBoreMe

I don't know anyone who has one that hates them. Only people who haven't got them dislike them 😀 - jealousy perhaps?
Hilarious. My last house had five bedrooms and two had en suites. I chose to use a bedroom without an en suite because I'm not keen on them.

I wasn't at all bothered that my new house has none. But equally I don't object to them.

TatianaBis · 21/01/2022 11:56

The bathrooms are fine, I find the use of ‘en suite’ to mean bathroom grating.

Do you mean "hate" like this?

Classic Blackadder Quotes

Mrs. Pants: But what about the privies?
Blackadder: Um, well, what we are talking about in privy terms is the latest in front wall fresh air orifices combined with a wide capacity gutter installation below.
Mrs. Pants: You mean you crap out the window?
Blackadder: Yes.
Mrs. Pants: Well in that case we'll definitely take it. I can't stand those dirty indoor things.

Notjustanymum · 21/01/2022 11:58

I aspire to have an en-suite (current house was built in the late 1940’s so they were unheard of then!)
However, our current layout (family bathroom, separate loo upstairs, other loo downstairs) means that at least if I want a long lazy bath, both loos are still accessible for everyone else in the house…
I think that the perceived hatred of them comes from a very small minority of MNers that try to deny that some bodily functions are natural, and also don’t install extractor fans in their loo rooms!

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 21/01/2022 11:58

My apartment has the main bathroom door right opposite the living room door so it's not mega private. My friends will say can I use your en suite which gives them more privacy

I live alone so it doesn't bother me, I use the main bathroom only for having a bath and cleaning teeth, en suite for toilet, shower and skincare!

User387598621 · 21/01/2022 11:59

I think it was in the 90s when they started shoehorning them into small new builds, some very small houses had a bathroom, an en-suite and a downstairs toilet but were not even big enough for the average family.

Ah, I take it you haven't read the post-poo arse washing threads.

@BarbaraofSeville

adjacent to bedroom is a room where people piss and shit

What, like a bathroom? Confused

Yes - bring back outside khazis
PurchaseInvoices · 21/01/2022 12:01

I have 6 bedrooms and 3 have en-suites.

They are lovely.

unfollowme · 21/01/2022 12:03

I currently live in a new build and have a en suite and a walk wardrobe which both are useful. I have also lived in a couple of more properties with en-suites but not enough space to have wardrobes which was a pain.

If the en suite is compromising wardrobe space I think it's annoying as we can always use the main bathroom but if the en suite is spacious and isn't compromising the sleeping/living/dressing space then it's not a problem. I've had a bedroom where the en suite was so small with no ventilation which seemed pointless and then no wardrobe space then, yes it did feel like shutting next to the bed which I agree with mn in that situation but my current living doesn't reflect that and it's rather useful apart from the fact it's an extra bathroom that needs to be cleaned.

unfollowme · 21/01/2022 12:04

*shitting not shutting Grin

musicviking1 · 21/01/2022 12:05

I love mine I have two plus a family bathroom. No mad rush to get to the bathroom first!

Blossomtoes · 21/01/2022 12:05

We have two bathrooms, neither of which are en suite and both of which are literally two steps from our bedroom. We could have one but I prefer my dressing room and I’m not willing to sacrifice it. Our adult kids had a starter home with an en suite, bathroom and downstairs loo - and no storage upstairs and nowhere to keep the ironing board or hoover. Crazy.

NotVictorianHonestly · 21/01/2022 12:06

Bloody love mine. But then it is very spacious and a proper room in its own right which doesn't cut into the bedroom at all. No noises or smells in the bedroom because it has proper solid walls, a substantial door, a window and a good extractor fan.

BiteyShark · 21/01/2022 12:06

I love mine but it is the size of another bedroom Grin
