My husband and I were talking about this over dinner and I'm genuinely interested in people's answers (not looking to wind anyone up).

I think Tory voters will still vote Tory as it ties in with their beliefs and they don't like the alternative 😔. It does make you wonder if anything would stop them voting Tory...
Where I live, you could stick a blue rosette on a Donkey in a General Election and it would get voted in.

There are die-hard members of all the main parties who would never vote any.other way.

RussiasGreatestLoveMachine · 19/01/2022 02:41

The problem with democracy is that the worst of wo/mankind tend to be the only ones willing to throw their hats into the ring.

This is a generalisation, of course. There are notable exceptions.

But with the increasing presence of social media, I stone cold guarantee, that it’s only going to get worse.

Who on earth wants to put themselves forward - and then also face the constant scrutiny and criticism?

No half-way decent person, who could so easily make a living doing something else, will go near politics with a barge pole….

I fear democracy is doomed. Sad

CheeseMmmm · 19/01/2022 02:55

I have never voted Tory and couldn't

BUT

There's no actual opposition is there.

Labour all over the shop unelectable. Shitshow whichever way you look. Kier S charisma void. Anti semitism. The woman stuff. Infighting momentum etc. Fucked up big time brexit in eyes of plenty. List goes on.

Libs have screwed themselves coalition screwed them and people don't forget quickly. Not been popular enough to present vote means anything except in certain areas.

Greens never been serious challengers.

Meanwhile Tory v up opinion polls. Society all over world shifting to more focus on local/national Vs wider. Globally that's way going. Rise of nationalist-lite, religious affiliation getting more important. Traditional 'values'. Things better in 70s/Britain best ww2 years/resentment of equality type stuff, protect our borders, hang up the bunting and make Britain great again. You know like it was before women got above themselves and no one worried about what the empire involved.

Going to be a LOT of people scratching heads when looking day comes.

@AnotherEmma

Surely there must be someone other than SNP and the Tories to vote for in Scotland?! Literally any other candidate?? Even if they're not likely to win, that's not the point. Vote for them anyway to show you prefer them to the main options.
Frankly no there isn’t ! They are all anti women up here. The only MP worth her salt is Jo Cherry and she is being bullied by other members of her own party the SNP/Greens.
Rhannion · 19/01/2022 02:58

@WindyState

People saying they would vote tory to keep the SNP out of Scotland.

Have you not been paying attention at all?

The conservatives fucking HATE scotland.

And the SNP/ Greens hate women! So where does that leave us women up here?
Diamondsapphire · 19/01/2022 02:59

To turn this on its head slightly, people continued to vote for Blair after all he’d ‘done’ too.

I can’t get too worked up over the drinks parties. I didn’t follow lockdown rules to the letter. I went out more than once a day. I know of a couple of people - hairdressers and the like - who were doing home visits illegally and while I didn’t use them myself I’m not really bothered by others having done so. I also drove out of my immediate area a fair amount.

What happened was undoubtedly wrong but I can’t force myself to be angry, outraged, shocked etc.

As for ‘why Tory’ - Labour's pious champagne socialist hypocrisy and policies on self ID just doesn't make for a workable government. In a very general sense I tend to lean towards the state interfering less, not more, in peoples lives, which means my views err slightly more towards the right than left.

Rhannion · 19/01/2022 03:03

@StoneofDestiny

Never have and never would vote Tory. Its mind boggling how anybody could vote Tory when they thought Boris Johnson was their best candidate for the job of PM. Ever after all his deceit, proven lies, dodging interviews and 'Peppa pig' nonsense some still back him!

I sincerely hope SNP continue in power in Scotland and I hope England wakes up to the nightmare they have inflicted on the UK.

I sincerely hope the SNP/Greens get a right good kicking at the council elections in May because they are misogynists and rogues.
Dexy007 · 19/01/2022 03:25

Boris is an arse and his blunders recently have been truly staggering. But have voted Tory for a while and will continue to do so. It honestly doesn't matter who the leader is to me, I don't have to like them. They're the figurehead, the branding. whatever. Thousands of people collectively run cabinet and government and make policy. It reminds me of the quote that gets churned out at election time - something along the lines/theme of 'if there isn't a bus going exactly where you want to go don't stay at home, get one going to the next town and walk'. I don't need to agree with every policy the Tories make or admire every member of cabinet to be happy, for now, that they are the party that best aligns with me, my goals, my views.

Secondly, I honestly think it's incredibly naive to think there wouldn't be scandals if Labour were in power. This is how it works - the spin doctors, the machine, the press, the sniping, digging up dirt on the opposition. I ignore it all. I read the manifestos at election time.

A labour govt isn't in my interests. I wouldn't switch to labour just because someone wonderful like Sir David Attenborough became party leader!

MintJulia · 19/01/2022 03:30
  • because I'm a woman (and like being a woman)
  • because I don't vote for the pm, I vote for the party
  • because a vote for Labour would turn into a vote for Momentum within weeks, and I am just old enough to remember the grim misery of living under a left wing government.
  • because Labour cannot be trusted with the economy.
SarahBellam · 19/01/2022 04:35

Not with that appalling sex yeti at the helm. He keeps showing us who he is. Why do we continue to not believe him?

Simonjt · 19/01/2022 04:58

@Mrbob

I love that people would vote for the most sexist misogynistic party going because “labour doesn’t like women much” even though there is a fair amount of evidence that the Tories like them even less on ALL grounds rather than one. And “I don’t like keir so I won’t vote for them, instead I will vote for a bunch of incompetent halfwits” And “labour aren’t very good for the economy so instead I will vote for the party who have totally destroyed the economy” I genuinely am bemused by the stupidity
Yep, plus the tories are racist, homophobic and anti-islam.

If you choose to vote for a racist, sexist, homophobic and anti-islamic party, you support those things an actively want them in your society.

YourenutsmiLord · 19/01/2022 04:58

No I wouldnt

tae19 · 19/01/2022 05:08

Well that didn't take long to descend into anti-trans rights. So sad that some people are heralding this as the ONLY issue. The idea that traditional conservatives give a shit about women would be laughable if it wasn't so ridiculous. I sometimes forget it the real world how many anti rights people are on mumsnet, it's disgusting.

TulipsGarden · 19/01/2022 05:20

@Pat123dev

A simple example from my perspective- under labour I got plenty of benefits lots of freebies. Conservative came in took it away, I went on to build a business to fill the void, it's a small business, but it provides for my family and I intend to grow it. I've gone from comfy with benefits to providing my family with a sustainable healthy income and now providing employment and contributing to my local economy and so on...
And what about the people who didn't have the capacity to do that? How do you think they're doing now?
CheeseMmmm · 19/01/2022 05:21

'. The idea that traditional conservatives give a shit about women would be laughable if it wasn't so ridiculous'

Women and girls are 50,% population.

Tory women plenty across board.
Local groups etc.

You think female conservative supporters don't give a fuck about women/girls?

That's a very big claim tbh.

CheeseMmmm · 19/01/2022 05:27

I am lefty to the core.

But this them bad they good stuff is childish thinking.

It's out of order to say no Tory women give a shit about their own sex. It's just not true.

And Tory women are way less cowed by men, in general, than other parties. Fearsome is a word that springs to mind.

Bitching about Tories aok. Slagging off eton men profiteering AOK. JRM obvious wants feudalism back. Yep.

Forgetting that loads of traditional conservatives ARE women? Not fab tbh.

CheeseMmmm · 19/01/2022 05:31

Labour sexist as fuck.

And what makes worse is that blokes who vv labour can't imagine ever they can't be 100,% righteous and good.

The amount of passionate labour chaps I've had strike up convo about politics etc. And then not listen to anything I say, talk over me, dismiss what I say out of hand. Essentially lecture me on how amazing they are and labour is.

It's INFURIATING.

Labour men in general are sexist as fuck.

The workers. Are and have always been. MEN.

A half decent opposition?

tara66 · 19/01/2022 06:02

Since Brexit I have only voted for whoever will not 'win' but is not too rediculous which is usually the Greens - but they have a horrendous tax policy, which I found out when I actually read their manifesto last time there was voting! But they came almost last.

DarknessAndLight · 19/01/2022 07:20

I’m also impressed that this is one of the most ethnically diverse cabinet ever under Tory.

Pat123dev · 19/01/2022 07:22

I didn't have the capacity to do it. Help and support became available, I took it.

Brieandcamembert · 19/01/2022 07:27

I'm a Tory through and through & will be voting for them again. Economically I would hate to live under a labour government.

My views align with conservative thinking much more. I think we cause a lot of social issues by putting sticking plasters on poverty.

Incidentally I find it really bizarre when people cite views around gender as a reason to vote or not vote for a party. Surely there are more important things to consider?

sst1234 · 19/01/2022 07:33

Not sure if you have seen the opposition lately. They couldn’t fight their way out of a paper bag. Tory backbenchers are more powerful in opposing the government than the official opposition. Let’s see who do we have on Labour benches. The leader is a perpetually terrified civil servant who accidentally wandered into the commons and has no clue what he is doing. Chaperoned by ‘baby mama’ Rayner who has random outbursts of “oi scum” as though she is on Jeremy Kyle. Then you have….actually who do we have? They are like the most mediocre bunch of council workers who turn up to work to clock off.

MagratsDanglyCharms21 · 19/01/2022 07:33

Realistically, it's always a 2-horse race so I would vote Tory. Labour are out because of their stance on women and private schools, so that leaves the Tories. I wouldn't vote for any of the others because then Labour could get in! To be honest, I'm not upset about Boris and his behaviour. We voted him in knowing how Boris is and he hasn't really changed. Boris does what Boris wants. I am more upset that there is no-one out there in politics at the moment that really inspires me with confidence and makes me really want to vote for them iyswim.

Zara2008 · 19/01/2022 07:38

It's a really strange time politically and has been for a while I think.

I don't believe that Labour are a strong opposition at the moment.

As a pp said the entitlement of the current government is quite extraordinary. They've treated the public with complete contempt.

People might continue to vote for them because there do not appear to be any better options and because of feeling the need for stability.
