@BackBackBack

My heart goes out to her family and friends. As well as all of those families and friends of women who are murdered and don't make the news.

We're told not to take risks, not to get drunk, to dress appropriately, to be aware. It's still not enough. I wonder what exactly it is we are supposed to do to "protect ourselves" when Sarah Everard was just walking home, Sabina Nessa was just walking to meet a friend, Sukhjeet Uppal was in her own home when she was stabbed to death, and Ashling Murphy just went for a run. At what point will society accept that placing the responsibility and blame on us as women is wrong, and that actually it's the men - and it is almost always men - who are at fault and need to be held responsible?

Instead of women being told not to walk after dark, why not tell men they can't go out? What will it take, because even in broad daylight, in well lit areas, in busy streets and in our own homes we aren't safe?

My god some of these comments on here do you actually think about what your posting rather than just ranting.

Just how exactly telling all men they can't go out is going to stop a murderer or person who does not give two shits about the law or others, going out anyway. Do you think they care or even care what other men think. There killers and evil full stop 🙄.

Bad shit happens daily it's not just picked up by the media. I'm really sorry for the family but the blame game won't stop murders and never has, it just breeds devision. What we need is unity, right now, and all the comments like this don't help.

Stillfunny · 14/01/2022 10:28

Unfortunately, nothing in my opinion can be protect anyone against this type of offender.
An alcoholic violent man who has no regard for himself or others . He will probably plead insanity and get off relatively lightly.
I live in a town that also has a well known individual like this .Currently out of jail after serving 10 years for rape. Police can not constantly watch him 24/7 , nor can they lock him up on case he offends again.

There will always be evil in the world . So depressing and so true.

My heart goes out to this beautiful young girl's family. It is every parents nightmare that their child will cross paths with an evil person like this. So very sad and tragic.

The outpouring of grief and anger in this case has highlighted how unsafe women in this society feel right now. Sentences for DV and so called " minor " attacks on women are disgusting light .

loveisanopensore · 14/01/2022 10:44

What men can do is challenge their friend's shitty behaviour.
Not let rape jokes go by.
Don't defend them to women being harassed.

CaveMum · 14/01/2022 11:12

@Stillfunny the man originally arrested has been released without charge. As unpleasant an individual as he sounds the police are content that he is not the murderer.

In any case with an attack on a woman, sadly the fist place to start is with those men known to her - family, boyfriend/ex-boyfriends, friends and work colleagues.

The fact is that most women will be killed by a man they know - The Femicide Census 10 Year Report found that, of the 1,425 women killed by men in the UK between 2009-2028, 92% were killed by a man they knew.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/01/2022 11:30

The legal system needs to recognise that rape convictions should be an indication that the perpetrator is a sexual deviant. Rape should be seen as a violent crime. Therefore a violent criminal who is sexually deviant should not be given the opportunity to "reform "

And thus should not be freed

bythebanksof · 14/01/2022 11:53

It is really is shocking. Working in legal area for many years, I thought I'd get used to it, but I have not, and that's a good thing. The poor girl, and her family and friends. Heartbroken.

When the murderer is found, he will be found to have a history of violence and sexual inappropriate behaviour, that will be well known to family, and friends, and perhaps work colleagues.

Most of the time these spaces are totally safe, until they are not. The sad thing is wonderful parks (and college campuses) near where I live are often a magnet for antisocial elements, drinking/drugs, stalking, flashers, etc. In my field, I'd be much more aware of this than others.

The "notallmen" thing really pisses me off.

MogsBestestFurball · 14/01/2022 12:02

I'm so angry that men keep doing this to women.

I had to rephrase my sentence there as I initially wrote 'that this keeps happening to women' like it's some random occurance and not a predictable behaviour by violent men. Whether or not the man arrested was the perpetrator, you can be certain that whoever did this will have come to the attention of the police before.

What is the solution, what can we campaign for? Would more funding for our overstretched police forces be a start? Minimum percentage of women police officers? National monitoring of stats for male violence against women and targets for forces to reduce this?

DdraigGoch · 14/01/2022 12:06

@goodyear2021

Yes 110 convictions and On bail
Why does the justice system never come to the point where they go "this person is never going to reform, time to throw away the key"?
irene9 · 14/01/2022 12:13

That guy they were questioning, it turns out he could not have been there at the time. He's been released.
The killer is still at large.

goodyear2021 · 14/01/2022 12:21

To think he is at large, roaming around makes me sick to the out of my stomach.

RIP Ashling and condolences to her family on the loss of a wonderful human being- its sounds as if she added light to everyone she met.

I read the reports in the Irish Times this morning.
I was braced for the comments underneath that would veer toward "not all men are like that".
That mindset sickens me... I dont let anti-Semitic or anti-BLM or anti-Traveller "jokes" go past. I argue the case for immigrants who may be fleeing their country the way that Irish people did in 1847-48. I wont tolerate little digs at myself or others in my company.
I dont ignore it, let it go past, and then say "well, not all Irish people are like that".
Pathetic.
Men are more interested in where they stand in the hierarchy with other men, than they are in the safety of women and children.

In the company of men, there are too many little sneery remarks from "decent men" that set up a misogynistic culture.
You would have to be extremely naive to think, that this doesn't influence the less "decent" men, who may not have the intelligence or insight to discriminate between fantasy and reality.
Who think that female super-heroes from Marvel is somehow related to how strong women are. Or who imagines that what he sees in porn is even remotely related to how women enjoy sex.

I hear you (men) with your remarks about :
"She was asking for it"
"What was she wearing?"
"What did she do to set him off?"
"the town bicycle"
"there are 2 types of women, those you shag and those you marry"
"girls are bitchy and hold a grudge, but boys will fight it out"
" single mothers bringing up children in broken homes"
"my daughter loves playing with the hoover"
"my blond daughter- the other girls are jealous"
"did she have a boy or a child?" (hahaha)

  • all of the above are real life examples
Dancingonmoonlight · 14/01/2022 12:32

I hope the police didn’t concentrate so much on the original suspect that the killer has moved from the area. :-(

Anotherviewtoyou · 14/01/2022 12:36

@CaveMum

As was frequently pointed out on the many threads about Sarah Everard, there is always a string of “minor” offences behind these men.

A vanishingly small number of murders are committed by first time offenders, there will be a history of domestic abuse or sex offences of some description in the perpetrator’s history.

Exactly. I read a really good article by the husband of Jill Meagher who said men can engage in catcalling, aggro with women who don’t give them attention in bars, locker room banter about women while comforting themselves that their behaviour is nothing like Bayley’s who was an evil monster. Whereas in reality all of those things contribute to facilitating people like Bayley. It’s well worth a read. We won’t solve anything by saying these men are evil monsters and not all men are like this. All men need to recognise how they or their friends behave and make that behaviour unacceptable.

goodyear2021 · 14/01/2022 13:47

So now that this guy who has been Released says his life has been ruined according to his solicitor .
Same guy with 110 previous convictions and is out on bail btw....
more fucking nonsense.

Imagine sitting at work wondering if it was any of the men in your building.

Imagine not know where your husband or son or brother was that afternoon and wondering what if?

Or imagine his wife has been sleeping blissfully by his side last night.

This. They can start by doing this. It's small and it may not change overnight, actually it definitely won't but it starts to create an environment where this behaviour is not acceptable. Young boys will grow up hearing this isn't acceptable who become men who won't do this.

Something small has to happen to make bigger change come.

Anotherviewtoyou · 14/01/2022 15:23

I’d love to see, in an Irish context, men standing up for women. Like every GAA team putting up a picture of the team and a Facebook post saying men won’t stand for this treatment of women. There is a good video made about men harassing women and not realising they are the problem. This could also be published on their teams social media page by every GAA team in the country. Or the GAA could come together with players and make a similar video.

Anotherviewtoyou · 14/01/2022 15:25

This is the video here

I don't think individual men can actually stop a woman from being murdered. However, they do seem aghast at the amount of fear among women in general when another murder happens, because they're pretty self absorbed and have no idea how fearful women can often be, how many daily adjustments women make and how many awful experiences we don't even bother mentioning. They can do something about that.

However, the fact that they couldn't be arsed and are offended at the idea tells you all you need to know.

Don't underestimate the potential power of men as bystanders. I was stopped by a man in a long coat as a teen on my way home from a night out- he was prattling on about just getting out of prison and not making a great deal of sense. He kept sidestepping so I couldn't get past (I was massively regretting my ridiculous heels- running was impossible). A guy crossing the road with his friend a good twenty metres away shouted something along the lines of, 'OI! What are you doing?' and the man in front of me left me alone. If the chap on the crossing hadn't challenged him IDK what would have happened, but I've forever been grateful.

@Allusernamesalreadyused

All of Ireland is in mourning tonight. Both men and women. It's horrific to think that this can happen to a young woman in prime of her life. A beautiful kind individual taken from her heartbroken family. We need to look urgently at a justice system that allows someone with so many violent convictions to roam freely looking for next victim. He will no doubt also get free legal aid. Thats way it goes in Ireland. Why wasn't he deported back to Romania when he clearly didn't want live by civilised rules. He must have had a history in Romania too-have we any control over type of people coming into our country. I would absolutely say the same if it was an Irish person treating society in another country like this. Am sickened to the core😢. We will all light a candle at 4:30pm tomorrow afternoon in Ashlings memory. #shewasjustgoingonarun😔
I don't watch MSM so I hadn't heard about this poor girl being murdered until I went on this thread. I was shocked to say the least. I constantly see women walking, jogging and running round my area, which is rural, and in Limerick City and I never have heard of anything like this before. My heart goes our to her family and friends, Lord have Mercy on her. The murderer won't be deported, and it is likely, going by past experience of murders committed by immigrants, that he'll be dubbed "mentally ill". There are also far too many NGOs falling over themselves to shield immigrants from facing proper justice when they commit crimes. Furthermore, the courts don't seem to take violent crimes against people seriously, especially if the victims are women or children. Consider that monster who murdered the 11 year old boy in Cork, who was released and managed to get into college in England and even had a girlfriend who knew! I'm remembering a case where some bastard raped a single mum, then set fire to the house knowing her 2 children were upstairs and he got such a lenient sentence it was a joke. Then there's Judge Anthony Nolan, who is notorious for handing out lenient sentences to sex offenders. Sad to say, our whole legal and political systems are as corrupt and as rotten as pears!
2Gen · 14/01/2022 16:16

@honeyrider

The spotlight needs to focus on the judiciary, sentences for violent crimes is far too lenient, so many vicious thugs have double or treble number previous cases yet the revolving door system is failing victims.

It's a gravy train for the judiciary. Legal aid should be capped to one or two times a person is charged so if they re-offend then they pay for legal representation themselves or they're on their own. Limitless free legal aid is an abuse of tax payers money.

Hear, hear I concur! If our legal system and the people in it, especially the bloody judges, had real integrity, these depraved and malevolent predators would not be so free to prey on the vulnerable. They are predators, they look for prey the same way animals do but, if they KNEW they would spend life in prison or better still, be executed, it might give them pause. If they were kept in prison longer and if a sex offender, given bromide for life or better still, surgically castrated, our children and we women would be safer. I am the mother of a young man and I do not want him tarred with the same brush as these monsters, which is why I vote for much harsher sentencing for sex offenders, woman beaters and murderers of those who are defenceless! I do want to see the return of the death penalty for the most heinous and brutal murders e.g. those in which the victims are tortured and/or raped then murdered. The Moors Murderers would have hung had they been caught a year before they were and their last victim would have been saved. I'm sick of the bleeding hearts crying over the perpetrators of these horrific crimes. MY compassion is with the victims and those who love them!

I think men can do a great deal. If/when they witness a man harassing a woman, they can step in and say something. It can become socially unacceptable for anyone to give unwanted attention to any woman at any time. I'm tired of hearing that people ie men don't step in because it can be the woman's boyfriend/partner/husband and the woman can get aggressive to the person trying to intervene. This can happen but surely it should be the normal thing to stop and ask the woman if she's ok at least. Our sons should be brought up to do this in the same way an adult will intervene if they see a child or animal in danger.
It needs to be completely unacceptable not to do this. The legal system needs to change too. The revolving door and free legal aid has to stop. People guilty of a previous assault have to be monitored and accountable for their movements. They don't have the 'right' to say they are reformed. They lost that right when they assaulted the first woman they attacked.
CaveMum · 14/01/2022 16:39

@2Gen you need to be a bit careful about what you are saying. The man initially arrested has been reported as an immigrant in the media but he has now been released without charge as he has an alibi. There is nothing at the moment to say that this horrific crime wasn’t committed by a born and bred local man.
