How often should I shower?

Ok so I'm having a few drinks with friends last night. We are all female a mix of parents and non parents. One friend mentions she is struggling to find time for o shower every day since she had her baby. I said "well I don't shower every day without a young baby," All of my friends looked at me in horror. Apparently even the ones with kids shower daily. Full disclosure I have two dd one under five and I work part time. I shower on work days plus one extra day so usually three times a week my days off usually consist of playing at home, walking dog, school run and maybe park. I would shower extra if exercising/having sex/on period etc. I bath my dc three times a week. My oh works out every week day so he does shower more than me. AIBD? (Disgusting 😂)

@HacerSonarSusPasos Ew you need to wipe your arse when you go for a shit you know. And I don't use my toothbrush to clean my arse with either. Blimey. I hope you never suffer mobility issues. Someone will have to come round and show you how to care for yourself properly as you'll obviously have problems with it

Lifeisnteasy · 13/01/2022 13:07
@Lifeisnteasy Right so you admit that it isn't always necessary to shower everyday. Thanks!
I didn’t say it was. I said generally every other day is the minimum to ensure you don’t smell.

No matter how well you wipe, there is always tiny particles of fecal matter that are left behind for your flannel to pick up. And then whenever you have the tiniest drop of water from the flannel onto another surface you are contaminating it. That is a fact. It don't understand why this is hard to understand!

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 13/01/2022 13:09

@DrSbaitso

How do you wash your bum at a sink?
You get hot water, wring your flannel out in it, lather up some soap, wash bum Rinse and Wring flannel out again in hot water and wipe off soap, repeat as needed. Towel dry

Or sit on the toilet, soap up and rinse with a bidet bottle or jug

I'm honestly amazed people don't know this, I wasn't taught how to wash people when caring, you just do it!!

VanGoghsDog · 13/01/2022 13:09

I don’t think most people are insisting a shower is any more effective than a ‘pits and bits’ wash. I simply said for most able bodied people I don’t see how washing your hands, face, armpits, boobs, bum, and genitals at the sink with a flannel every day is as easy or comfortable as just having a shower.

For THEM! I think just accept that some people have different experiences and you're never going to understand them.

Anyway, you forgot feet. I hope you wash your feet in the shower, if not that's GRIM! (Unless you're disabled of course, then you have magic fairy feet that don't ever need washing #sarcasm)

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 13/01/2022 13:10

@HacerSonarSusPasos well that's the same if you have a shower or stand round naked anywhere?! I clean my sink well with bleach and I have kept me and my family alive. Are you trying to shame me or something? Very strange.

I was responding to a poster who specifically said they wash all those parts in a sink wash. They didn’t mention their feet.

Don’t see how you’d wash your feet in the sink though. Although I’m sure someone will be along to tell me it’s obviously much much simpler and quicker than showering, you simply take a fresh flannel after disposing of your bum and vagina flannel and hop on one foot then the next to scrub them in the sink, rinsing them off under the hot tap one at a time.

Which is obviously so easy and comfy. Why did anyone invent showers when it’s so much easier to wash yourself with five different flannels and rinse with jugs from the sink?

The shower is a contained area usually. Either glass or a shower curtain will prevent drops from getting everywhere. The sink is where most people store their toothbrush/hairbrush/soap dispenser/etc. When you rinse stuff at the sink, droplets get on all those things.

I'm not trying to shame you. I'm just stating the obvious. That cleaning your bum/genitals in the sink is less hygienic than doing it the shower.

But go ahead and get offended by facts all you want

I don't mean to be disgusting, but what if you get poo on the flannel while soaping, which is almost certain since you can't clean every bit from paper wiping? You just dip it in the sink to rinse it and then continue to use it from that same water? And use it again the next day?

Ugly laughing over this right now

Eustaciavile · 13/01/2022 13:22

@NatashaBedwouldbenice

You can wipe a lot off with toilet paper but first thing in the morning I always preferred a shower.

Well yes, but that's different to having a shower every time you have a bowel movement.

You do what suits you. I don't shower every day - retired and not very active. I love these shower threads and am waiting for the 3-times a day gal to rock up!

She's been and gone, you missed her.

She’s in the shower 🤣🤣🤣
PigFan · 13/01/2022 13:22

@Lifeisnteasy

I’m the only one who said that. Laugh away. I don’t smell and as I said I'm disabled so CANT shower often, doesn’t mean I don’t clean myself.. Glad you're enjoying yourself laughing at me.

Oh please you know I wasn’t referring to people who physically cannot shower due to disabilities.

You practically quoted me. Once a week shower and highlight of the word "definitely". Who else on this thread used those words? Just me. Maybe my words just stuck in your head and you didn’t realise who you were quoting? My life isn’t a joke and you did laugh at me even if it was in error.
waterlego · 13/01/2022 13:24

Don’t see how you’d wash your feet in the sink though.

Stand on one leg and put the other foot in the sink!

(Unless you have disabilities or mobility issues)

Mreggsworth · 13/01/2022 13:24

I shower daily but more so because I enjoy it. I dont think I really need to, I very rarely feel unclean before my shower except if I'm on my period. So every other day would probably do.

If anything I should shower less as I have really dry skin on my upper arms and bum from spending too much time in hot water. But my routine would just feel too off if I didn't shower.

Lifeisnteasy · 13/01/2022 13:24

@PigFan I was absolutely 100% not quoting you; and I know I wasn’t because I didn’t RTFT, just the OP then added my comment. I only started reading other replies afterwards.

Then I would get a clean flannel for rinsing, then both go in the wash It's poo, not asbestos Same principle as if you are cleaning someone up who is incontinent, and you have flannels for bum and well, not bum!

I seriously wonder how some people on this thread would cope in the event of a drought and water rationing.

Fine I should imagine, I mean who needs water? 🙄
dalrympy · 13/01/2022 13:33

I do every other day or a little more. So basically 4 times a week. Sometimes more depending on what I'm doing.

AllThePogs · 13/01/2022 13:37

If you need state care, you are unlikely to get a shower every day.

We'd deal with it, of course. But until that time comes, why live as if you're under restrictions when you're not?
stmw123 · 13/01/2022 13:40

Every other day for me, unless I specifically need one for whatever reason.

I'm not dirty after one day, it's just a waste of time and money.

Yes, I know it's not asbestos. I'm not asking about drilling into your large intestine.

Anyway, thank you for answering the question. Personally I find a shower, if possible, preferable to doing this.

Do you also ration food and toilet paper to be prepared in case of shortages? Or is it just shower that you are so eager to skimp on?
