How often should I shower?

Ok so I'm having a few drinks with friends last night. We are all female a mix of parents and non parents. One friend mentions she is struggling to find time for o shower every day since she had her baby. I said "well I don't shower every day without a young baby," All of my friends looked at me in horror. Apparently even the ones with kids shower daily. Full disclosure I have two dd one under five and I work part time. I shower on work days plus one extra day so usually three times a week my days off usually consist of playing at home, walking dog, school run and maybe park. I would shower extra if exercising/having sex/on period etc. I bath my dc three times a week. My oh works out every week day so he does shower more than me. AIBD? (Disgusting 😂)

It's not necessary to shower everyday - in fact it strips your body if essential oils, messes with the health if your hair and dries out the skin. You do you. It's an American import for people who are phobic.

Sounds like a line teenagers trot out when they convince themselves that their body has natural cleansing properties and that washing interferes with that process.

Except it's actually true. Maybe read up on it

Nope, it’s what dermatologists recommend.

Gosh, we must have been a smelly lot in the 50s - bath night Wednesdays and Saturdays.

appleturnovers · 21/01/2022 09:01
@appleturnovers can you inform us how exactly you have a hygienic full body strip wash that is quick and easy?
Why would you need a ^full body strip wash* every single day?! Unless you work a dirty job or have dirty hobbies, your arms, legs, stomach, back etc. do not need washing every day.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 21/01/2022 09:20

I have a very good sense of smell and I can confidently say that I've never noticed our mid-teen DD 'smells' because she only showers every other day.

ravenmum · 21/01/2022 09:28

Those shatafs look really good. I've thought of getting one of those, or another kind of bidet addition, for my loo, but there's not enough space in my bathroom, alas (it is really cramped!).

I use toilet paper, then a flannel and water. Those of you who don't, do you get undressed and have a shower every time you defecate? Or do you wait until that evening/the next morning, at the time you wash the rest of your body?

I have a load of little flannels, of different colours, which I use to wash, for applying makeup etc. After each use I chuck them straight in the washing basket, which is right by the sink. Then when I do a hot wash, they go in with the towels, pants etc. They're small, so take up as much space as the towel I'd have to wash if I was showering more.

To those only showering once a day I'll just say it- you are minging. I average about 5/6 showers a day* - First on rising (I sweat at night), second after morning exercise, third after walking the dog (more sweat), fourth after afternoon sex (I wfh), fifth after cooking dinner (not going to sit on my grey velvet sofa with spag bol smells on me), sixth before bed to feel super fresh and not pollute my bedding. IMHO f you have only once shower a day you are basically a walking bag of filth.

*On occasions where I've sharted or been excessively windy could up this to 9/10.

SC215 · 21/01/2022 20:38

I don't care how often someone showers, as long as they don't smell.

A few of my colleagues smell pretty bad, some stink every single day. I wish they would shower daily.

You’re so lucky to have so much free time on your hands.

It takes literally 30 seconds to shower. 6 showers x 30 seconds is 3 minutes. Are you saying you don't have 3 minutes a day free?

Do you mean your post was serious? Sorry, thought it was tongue in cheek.

It's not because they don't shower daily that they smell though. It's more likely that they don't wash or don't wear anti-perspirant deodorant. I once had a colleague with money problems who was clean, but had no money for anti-perspirant and was putting perfume she already owned on her armpits. Needless to say, it didn't work.

If you do intense exercise it can't be avoided. Personally if I exercise in the evening and shower straight after, I won't shower the next morning, but I get that for very sporty people you sometimes need more than one shower a day. You're lucky you don't have dry skin, but be aware it can get drier with age.
Rewis · 22/01/2022 10:06

I don't shower daily. It depends on the week. I wfh and every social event is forbidden when I live. Therefore I shower when I feel gross or if Im seeing people.

I do exercise but a lot if times I don't get that sweaty so I might shower the next day after a second workout. And my scalp and my skin has improved since I've showered a lot less in the last 2 years.

Oh no it definitely was tongue in cheek 😂
ghostmouse · 22/01/2022 11:55

I used to work with someone who only showered 2 or 3 times a week. She thought she didn’t smell. She did. She smelt. It was rather unpleasant having to sit next to her actually.

I don’t shower I have a bath every day instead. I grew up and lived in houses with no shower until 2015 (council house, no shower as standard until then) so I’ve always had baths, will in the summer shower in the morning before work l.

Only showering/bathing 3 times a week is a bit grim imo

Brilliant.

I swear when I first joined here someone posted it was “barbaric” to sleep in bedding that was not freshly laundered. Yes, she changed her bedding every single day.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 22/01/2022 12:09

There is absolutely nothing wrong with showwering 3 times a week. Every single day is actually less healthy.

So did I. Anyway it takes more than 30 seconds to shower, dry yourself, apply your unguents of choice and get dressed again. And do you put the same clothes back on after you’ve showered or is it clean ones every time?
