How often should I shower?

Ok so I'm having a few drinks with friends last night. We are all female a mix of parents and non parents. One friend mentions she is struggling to find time for o shower every day since she had her baby. I said "well I don't shower every day without a young baby," All of my friends looked at me in horror. Apparently even the ones with kids shower daily. Full disclosure I have two dd one under five and I work part time. I shower on work days plus one extra day so usually three times a week my days off usually consist of playing at home, walking dog, school run and maybe park. I would shower extra if exercising/having sex/on period etc. I bath my dc three times a week. My oh works out every week day so he does shower more than me. AIBD? (Disgusting 😂)

Everyday of course. If nothings else, it leaves you feeling fresh and ready for the day/bed depending on when you wash. I can almost feel a 'film' of sleep all over me before i shower.

Obviously if you can’t afford water/are disabled/live in a shack on top of a mountain and have to carry your water 900 miles and heat it with friction from two sticks you foraged from the woods it’s a different situation. But for most of us able bodied people in the uk it would surely be easier to shower

😂😂😂

I'm an able-bodied person, in a country where it would be very easy for me to shower every day. I love showering and would really like to shower every day. I don't do it because it is bad for my skin and the environment. My choice. If you prefer the easy route, that's fine too. I'm not going to lecture you. Each to their own.

Oh of course! I’m not lecturing at all. Unless it somehow affects me personally I couldn’t care less how often you or anyone else showers. So if you don’t because of your skin that’s your business.

I was just perplexed by the insistence that washing all those areas at a sink is somehow ‘easier’ than showering. In the majority of cases it just isn’t.

appleturnovers · 13/01/2022 11:38

@ayegazumba

I thought everyone showered everyday. People saying it's normal not to is news to me and a bit gross to be honest. How often do you brush your teeth??
First off, not showering isn't the same as not washing. I wash under my arms every day, shower twice a week.

But even if I didn't wash every day, my armpits aren't going to go rotten and fall off if I don't wash them, unlike my teeth.

Joystir59 · 13/01/2022 11:39

My daily shower takes less than five mins. I wash my face and the smelly bits. I only wash my very short hair circa once a week. My shower is quicker cleaner than a strip wash and infinitely more satisfying.

2022HereWeCome · 13/01/2022 11:46

I bloody hate showers generally speaking. I hate the getting out of a warm shower into a colder room to get dry. My hair invariably gets wets / damp and then takes ages to dry. I hate hate hate shower gels as they are generally full of horrid chemicals and bars of soap invariably get mushy. Much prefer a soak in the bath ... but not everyday ...

It definitely is easier! I do both regularly so I should know... Washing in the sink advantages: you don't have to get fully undressed (massive boon in my house in winter), you only get your armpits wet (so quicker, and again, massive boon in winter), therefore much quicker to get dry too. There's also the advantage that you don't get through towels and bath mats so quickly, don't have to wipe down the shower so often, don't have to fully ventilate the bathroom for 20 minutes every morning (again, massive boon in winter... if you haven't guessed yet, my house is cold and draughty and the heating is sh**e). Then splash your face with water. All in all you can get a sink wash done in 30 seconds.

HacerSonarSusPasos · 13/01/2022 11:53

@appleturnovers, but you only addressed washing your pits. What about genitals and feet? Surely that makes a sink wash 100% more complicated

I wasn’t really referring to washing armpits then ‘splashing face’ but more to the poster who said they wash ‘bra area, genitals, armpits.’ I guess I wouldn’t really consider a quick wash of armpits and ‘splash of water on the face’ to be a proper wash, to me that’s a freshen up but not a wash.

To do a proper strip wash of all relevant areas it wouldn’t be quicker or easier than showering realistically. Of course if you’re just wiping your face and armpits it will be quicker.

Lifeisnteasy · 13/01/2022 11:55

I’m the only one who said that. Laugh away. I don’t smell and as I said I'm disabled so CANT shower often, doesn’t mean I don’t clean myself.. Glad you're enjoying yourself laughing at me.

Oh please you know I wasn’t referring to people who physically cannot shower due to disabilities.

We have another one! So what's the difference? You say that you can't possibly not smell if you only have 1 shower a week, but if you're disabled you're an exception to that rule?

Yes 🤷🏼‍♀️

waterlego · 13/01/2022 12:31

So @Lifeisnteasy, you think disabled people who don’t shower daily don’t smell? Or they do smell but that’s acceptable to you?

Which is it?

Lifeisnteasy · 13/01/2022 12:33

Some will, some won’t, same as other people. Depends on their hygiene habits, if they wear clean clothes every day, etc.
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 13/01/2022 12:37

@Lifeisnteasy Right so you admit that it isn't always necessary to shower everyday. Thanks!

Vbree · 13/01/2022 12:39

I shower twice a day but I'm a sweaty person and a bit ocd about it. A few of my friends shower about 3-4 times a week and look clean. Everyone is different and some people don't sweat or smell much

AryaStarkWolf · 13/01/2022 12:40

Who would have thought other people's washing habits would be such a contentious issue Grin

cinci · 13/01/2022 12:47

Just because you can't do it properly or without making a mess doesn't mean other people can't

So what's the answer? How does your bum get washed in a sink and how is this better than having a shower😳

cinci · 13/01/2022 12:48

Like no, I can't do it. That's why I use the shower cubicle in my bathroom 🤷🏽‍♀️

DrSbaitso · 13/01/2022 12:55

How do you wash your bum at a sink?

waterlego · 13/01/2022 12:58

Exactly what I was thinking!

Some people don’t need to shower every day and we should really trust people to know their own bodies well enough to decide how often showering is appropriate for them.

Plenty of people shower daily but smell anyway. Smokers, for example. (I used to be one myself and my God, it stinks) and people who use excessive amounts of perfume or scented products.

As for how it is possible to wash one’s bum in a sink. A flannel is the answer! Clean flannel used to wash bits, bum etc and then it goes in the wash. Not complicated at all.

Like I said earlier, I’m a daily showerer (I’m a frequent exerciser and just generally a sweaty person) but I am able to use my imagination to understand that everyone else’s bodies, needs and routines aren’t the same as mine.

I stand on a towel with a flannel and dry myself on the towel afterwards. Clean flannel every time. I am disabled and struggle to get into a shower. So it's better for me as it doesn't hurt me to do. I get fed up of being in pain.

@DrSbaitso

How do you wash your bum at a sink?
Same way you do it in the shower but with a bowl of water.
HacerSonarSusPasos · 13/01/2022 13:01

@DrSbaitso

How do you wash your bum at a sink?
The obvious answer is by wiping with and then rinsing out your bum flannel in the sink, thus spreading tiny droplets of poopy water all over it, including all over your toothbrush and everything else you keep nearby.

Yeah, I'll stick to my 3 minute shower...
