AIBU to think that Boris should resign now?

Seemslikeagoodidea · 11/01/2022 17:45

Today it has been revealed that in May 2020 invitations were emailed to (allegedly) 100 Downing Street staff, for a garden party. This party happened during the first lockdown, when many people could not visit their elderly relatives, even on their death beds, due to the lockdown rules. The email was sent by one of the PM's top people, and stated that people should "bring their own booze and enjoy the sunshine". Today Boris has been conspicuous by his absence.

I think this is the final straw and shows a lack of judgement and absence of moral fibre. Enough is enough - he should resign and if he doesn't do it then his own party should force him to go.

AIBU?

Clavinova, you said before that you wanted to establish the facts before commenting on Johnson's attendance at the party.

I haven't heard many facts at all. When do we hear the result of the inquiry?

Pumperthepumper · 12/01/2022 12:47

@justasking111 regardless. Labour are seen as the moral party, and the Tories are not. Even by their own supporters.

Sparklingbrook · 12/01/2022 12:47

We can but hope @VickyEadieofThigh, i'm just wondering if any of them are even willing to take over.

SickAndTiredAgain · 12/01/2022 12:48

@something2say

What bothers me is this...

The invite went out to 100 MPs yes? Yet only now the Tories are seeking his resignation. Yet they knew of the wrongdoing as they were invited to it!!

I just feel I can't trust the lot of them. Is this only coming to a head now to get rid of him? They've known all along yet they sit on the info until it behoves them to use it.

Sack the lot of them and get people in who actually care about us rather than themselves.

Not 100 MPs to be fair, it was employees rather than elected people I believe.
Peregrina · 12/01/2022 12:48

I did like the way that Starmer got away with saying that the public think Johnson is a liar. It was quite clear what he actually meant.

PartyOnKale · 12/01/2022 12:49

Boris Johnson did attend but doesn't recognise a party.
Sad.

peridito · 12/01/2022 12:49

I know this is often asked and I often can't think wny - but ..did anyone else think BJ looked tired/not well .More so than usual .
Rousette what did you think ?

peridito · 12/01/2022 12:50

I'm asking because I ,shallow person that I am ,hope he's worried .Very worried.

No, the invitations went out to 100 people who work in No 10…not 100 MPs
AnotherRandomUsernom · 12/01/2022 12:51

Definitely needs to go. Can we have a mature adult with a sense of responsibility now please?

PartyOnKale · 12/01/2022 12:52

I think Starter fits the bill tbh.

PartyOnKale · 12/01/2022 12:52

Starmer!

Roussette · 12/01/2022 12:53

peridito yes, I thought he looked tired, and a bit defeated. But unless he's a robot he probably didn't sleep that well last night, knowing what PMQ would be like today.

I have no sympathy whatsoever, saying he thinks it was 'work' makes me absolutely furious. If he gets away with this, it will be because of that as a loophole. Let's hope Sue Grey is a moral and honest civil servant.

SonicBroom · 12/01/2022 12:53

Anyone else now totally sceptical that this inquiry is going to be anything other than a warped attempt to get the PM off the hook?

He seemed very confident he knew why it was going to say. It’s going to brush everything under the carpet and gaslight us all isn’t it?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/01/2022 12:53

It was a party for civil servants at Downing Street rather than MPs

Are you sure you're not thinking of a previous one, where head civil Simon Case servant had to pas the job to Sue Gray after a party was found to have been held in his own office?
There have been so many of these parties - sorry, work events - that it's hard to keep track, and for all we know Sue Gray may well have been at them

Clavinova give it up ... you appear an intellligent woman, so I doubt even you imagine that a proper i dependent enquiry can ever be carried out by someone in the pay of a government they're supposed to be investigating
The "enquiry" might be a handy tool to avoid answering questions now, but it's really not going to be any more than that

SueSaid · 12/01/2022 12:56

Thought he came across well in PMQs. Apologised, admitted it shouldn't have happened then pointed out what they have done well. Fastest economic growth in the G7, least restrictions in Europe, fastest vaccine roll out etc etc.

This was a massive error of judgement. If nothing else it would obviously have got out, but going into a garden for 25mins to thank staff who were drinking wine doesn't seem that outrageous.

You only had to read mumsnet to see many were flouting, fine they weren't running the country but the faux outrage when beaches etc were all rammed that weekend is a bit unconvincing.

SmellyOldOwls · 12/01/2022 12:56

Stephen Farry made an excellent point, if Johnson was actually remorseful he would have owned up and apologised before being caught out.

He needs to go. It's not just the public who are furious with him, it's other MPs in tears in the commons. How much longer can this go on?

ThunderCrow · 12/01/2022 12:57

YANBU - this is the latest in a long line of criminality, corruption and incomptence. He should have gone long, long ago.

This government is a shower of shame on the country. When those at the very top behave like they have, they set a tone for everyone: that corruption and self-service is OK. It's not.

Johnson acts under the Trump mode: he lies, we know he lies and he knows we know he lies - but banks on the audicity of the lie being enough to carry him.

The biggest worry for me is this: they acted like this assuming they would not 'get caught'. What that tells me is this: there is a fuck load of stuff that they do not get caught for and that we don't know about. That's what gave them the impression that this would be another thing we never found out about.

Ditto selling government favours for wallpaper. Ditto handing billions of pounds to friends, family and themsleves under the cover of government contracts. Ditto, changing government rules to let their mates off. Ditto, not bothering to attend important meetings because they are too busy writing books or being paid by private businesses for other work. Ditto, lying to the Queen and us.

They shame us. Johnson should go down in history as the worst Prime Minister we ever had.

elodie77 · 12/01/2022 12:59

Loving watching BoJo squirm.

Roussette · 12/01/2022 12:59

It's more than an error of judgement. Do you think he didn't know that 100 people were invited.

I'm afraid that 99.9999% of people think it is outrageous.

It's not just about him out there for 25 minutes, it's the fact he fostered this culture of breaking the rules his government had set for everyone else. Lead by example FFS.

Those on the beaches aren't running the country. I didn't break rules, many many people didn't, hence these terribly sad stories on another thread of what people went through in May 2020. Heartbreaking.

Jesus. If Starmer was in we'd never have had Freedom day in July, he predicted Armageddon and nothing happened.

Even with all this ammunition Starmer came across as weak, nasal, whiny. He doesn't have any presence at all.

Look at Wales for any clue on what a disaster a Labour government would be.

Are you really excusing his absolute disregard for the lockdown.

Yes, of course; as said in my last post, there's simply no way an ambitious civil servant's going to rat on those paying them - at least not if they want to keep their cushy jobs

I suppose if Boris went she could use that to pin the blame on him, but even then it would be pointless as they'd claim "It's all history now" and carry on as before, but under a new leader

SonicBroom · 12/01/2022 13:01

Allegra, I this won’t get you your job back.

All they’ve done is look for a loophole in the rules and retrofit it to their story of what happened.

Mylifefeelslikeadream · 12/01/2022 13:03

If the 1922 committee gets enough letters are they required to call for a vote of no confidence or can they sit on them?
