AIBU to complain to sainsburys about this?

Am I being a cranky old witch, mumsnet?

Today on a 8.30-9.30 food delivery slot the delivery driver buzzed to get into the building at 8.20 and 8.21. I was still in bed and half dressed at this point. As soon as the 8.20 buzz happened I got up and began pulling clothes on. By 8.22 I was opening my front door and he was there (I'm not sure how he got through the communal front door in the end, possibly also buzzed my neighbours?). He said 'I tried buzzing but nobody let me in' to which I responded 'yes because it's not 8.30' to which he appeared to not know what to say. (A mumbled apology)

The delivery drivers are often a bit early but always call me from the van out of courtesy to check it's okay to come up early.

AIBU number 1- AIBU to think it's not okay to turn up 10 mins early in the morning with a food delivery?

AIBU number 2- AIBU to complain to the supermarket on their online tool to ask their them to remind their drivers to be more considerate if they are turning up early, particularly in the morning? (I don't want anything out of this, genuinely do just want to not have them keep coming early. I picked 8.30-9.30 instead of 8-9 for a reason).

Have a word with yourself. You were planning on giving yourself a minute to get dressed? You're being ridiculous in the extreme.

Whoknowsweknows · 10/01/2022 17:07

Yabu! Seriously if this is all you have to worry about. Boo hoo my delivered food shopping turned up 10 minutes early.

Georgeskitchen · 10/01/2022 17:09

I wouldn't complain. Poor bloke is probably trying to get ahead of his game ready to face the onslaught of entitled whingy customers complaining that he is late. How dare there be other vehicles on the road causing jams when they are waiting for their shopping!!

FrankGrillosWrist · 10/01/2022 17:09

I think you should get your own shopping from now on. If I have a 6am delivery, I’m all showered & ready for it. I really appreciate what these delivery drivers do for us.

megletthesecond · 10/01/2022 17:10

Yabu.
I'd have been up and at least had a cup of tea some time before delivery was due. Don't even think about complaining.

AngelinaFibres · 10/01/2022 17:10

Tell you what. Stop ordering food online and go and buy it yourself. You can lie in bed all day then. Or, alternatively, be polite to someone who is doing their job bringing food to you so you can get up at 8.29. Presumably if he had been 10 minutes late you would have complained about that too.

CovidCurious · 10/01/2022 17:11

10 mins is well within a window of acceptability either end, which I think is 15 mins. YABU. I would not book a slot if I knew I had to be out of the house or otherwise engaged dead on either end of the slot.

DiddyHeck · 10/01/2022 17:11

Yes do complain. My son used to work for Sainsburys and complaints like yours would see you blacklisted and therefore refused future deliveries 👍

lindyloo57 · 10/01/2022 17:12

I think you are being a bit hard ten minutes is fine , would you complain if he was ten min late, you got to allow traffic. Maybe supermarkets should give a half hour slot

Bluebluemoon · 10/01/2022 17:12

Runninginthewind

"I get up at 9.29, unless at 9.20 I get rudely awakened by the Sainsbury's man"
"MARD-LIFE"
"I put my dressing gown on, shuffle into me slippers and walk tutting down to the door"

"I yank open the door - Im snarky to the driver too - it gives me a sense of enormous satisfaction"

"And then I stew over it for the rest of the day, safe in the knowledge I can post a thread on MN about it later......"

Aaalllll the people, the entitled people -

It goes hand in hand with their....MARDLIFE!!!!!!"

It needs a bit of work but whaddya think?

LowlandLucky · 10/01/2022 17:13

Are you for real ? You sound so bloody entitled.

BeefSupreme · 10/01/2022 17:13

What do you hope to get out of complaining? Do you want the delivery driver fired?

2022sucksalready · 10/01/2022 17:13

Never shop with Ocado op, they regularly deliver hour early here. Most of them phone if it’s more than 15 minutes early, but not always. That could have been fun for you!

nopatience00 · 10/01/2022 17:15

Jesus, yes YABVU!!

Our delivery driver came 2 hours early the other night, we were just coming up to the house and he was already there waiting, we weren't annoyed in the slightest as it got it out the way and we didn't have to sit around waiting. They get paid very little and get no breaks. 10 minutes is nothing, chill out and book a later slot in the future if you want a lie in!!

maddy68 · 10/01/2022 17:15

Why weren't you up ten minutes before you had booked a delivery slot for?

Cap89 · 10/01/2022 17:17

I get it OP. We’ve found sainsburys have been frequently arriving earlier than requested recently. They used to call to check it was ok, but the last two times they haven’t. The last time he phoned me quite grumpy saying he was at the door and no one was answering. I was in the middle of getting myself and my newborn dressed so we’d be ready for the start of our delivery slot 15 mins later. He didn’t apologise. I found it irritating, but didn’t complain, life’s too short and in the grand scheme it’s not a huge problem. Annoying though.

2Hot2Handle · 10/01/2022 17:17

YANVU. 10 mins is no time at all.

PriamFarrl · 10/01/2022 17:18

@thismeansnothing

Damn right complain. You've picked a timeslot for a reason.

Why I work we are down scored for early deliveries.

Wow. So you’d kick someone else in the balls just to prove a point?
Snowisfalling33 · 10/01/2022 17:18

I think being a delivery driver is a pretty thank less task to be honest. They try to organise their route so that they're as efficient as possible. EG if somebody nearby had an order for 8pm then they'd come straight to you rather than driving to another area then coming back.
My orders are pretty much always early, last one was two hours early. So I do think, although being woken up is a bit irritating, you should cut the poor guy some slack.

Staffy1 · 10/01/2022 17:19

I had the same a couple of years ago. He turned up early unannounced and just started loading the crates onto the door step. I was going to ignore it as I was in the middle of changing a nappy but he kept ringing the bell and it was obvious I was in as windows open and bathroom right next to front door. When I commented that he was early I got a grumpy “We’re allowed to be up to 15 minutes early”. Nice of them to tell the customer that. He then complained that the car was in the way and wasn’t usually. Well yes, because you were early and it would have been moved just before the given arrival time.

Brieandcamembert · 10/01/2022 17:20

You really didn't leave much time to get up and ready for their arrival. Maybe get up a bit earlier?

OrinoccoFlew · 10/01/2022 17:21

Totally unreasonable - I would expect them to be a little early and would be out of bed in good time just in case.

Staffy1 · 10/01/2022 17:21

@DiddyHeck

Yes do complain. My son used to work for Sainsburys and complaints like yours would see you blacklisted and therefore refused future deliveries 👍
Well that about sums them up. Rotten customer service compared to Tesco.
saraclara · 10/01/2022 17:21

Delivery logistics is an incredibly complex area, and can all go to shit when just one thing goes wrong, like an accident or road works, or even an older person who is very slow to take their unbagged stuff into the kitchen. And of course it's the poorest paid person at the end of the logistics chain who is on the end of the wrath of customers for who s/he is a bit early or a bit late.

Ten minutes early is nothing, and if anything, something to be grateful for. He could have sat in his van until 8:30, but it would be sod's law for something further along his route to delay him when that ten minutes would have saved him getting a bollocking from the customer that he was ten minutes late for.

If nothing else, the last 21 months has taught me to be grateful for delivery people, and to recognise how shitty their job is. I'm always excessively friendly and nice to them now. No way would I complain about this guy! That would be unspeakably mean of you.

mumshouse · 10/01/2022 17:22

I always make sure I'm at home and in a fit state to open the door 30 minutes before they're due.

It's unreasonable to expect them to just sit there twiddling their thumbs because they reached your address 10 minutes early.

If you didn't want to get out of bed till 8:30 you should have booked the shop for 9am or later.
