ENCANTO - we are obsessed!

Jacarandamanda · 06/01/2022 00:08

Our family love it (but biased as South American’s!)

Opinions!?

I know a lot who have said they think the story is quite weak

OP posts:
TheHamburgler · 08/01/2022 21:33

I think that’s a bit harsh - there have been a lot of weak Disneys in the last couple of decades!

Ignoring the traditionally animated ones (because I don’t have all day!) my ranking of all the CGI Disneys would be:

Moana
Zootopia
Big Hero 6
Encanto
Tangled
Raya and the Last Dragon
Frozen
Frozen 2
Wreck it Ralph
Meet the Robinsons
Ralph Breaks the Internet
Bolt
Dinosaur
Chicken Little

I appreciate everyone’s list will be different, but there’s some real trash towards the bottom of the pile!

Liathroid · 08/01/2022 21:36

@TheHamburgler I agree with your list with the exception of how Encanto should also be down the bottom!

If you haven’t seen it yet and you enjoyed big hero six you will probably like Ron’s gone wrong!

TheHamburgler · 08/01/2022 21:39

Thanks! I hadn’t heard of it before this thread, might watch it tonight Smile

CaveMum · 08/01/2022 21:48

@TheHamburgler try “Ron’s Gone Wrong” too, bloody hilarious!

TheHamburgler · 08/01/2022 21:50

I just said I would, give me a minute Grin

CaveMum · 08/01/2022 21:50

@Mylittlecoconuts I was starting to think we were the only ones! It’s a very knowing film, definitely a dig (or ten!) at Apple/Microsoft/et al in there!

CaveMum · 08/01/2022 21:51

Oops! Sorry, I thought you were referring to Encanto Blush
Liathroid · 08/01/2022 21:53

@CaveMum I loved Ron’s gone wrong!

mrtumblesspottybg · 08/01/2022 21:54

Thought I was the only one. We Love this one in my house. Easily the best disney film ever and I'm obsessed with the soundtrack. Lin Manuel Mirander is a genius

MaryAndHerNet · 08/01/2022 21:54

Ron's gone wrong is a good movie, not Disney tho, well, kinda..
It's a 20th century animation, who are owned by Disney I believe, but it's not a Disney animated studios Disney movie..
It's on Disney+ though..
Good day Absolom.. dikka dikka dikka..

BridgeFarmKefir · 08/01/2022 21:59

DD3 saw it in the cinema with DH a few weeks ago, and has rewatched it about 3,792 times since on Disney+. She is OBSESSED. It's the first time she's been properly obsessed with anything (apart from Paw Patrol)

Thankfully we really like it so it's not too much of a hardship yet. The scene where Abuela shows what happened when she was younger makes me cry Every. Single. Time.

TheHamburgler · 08/01/2022 22:02

People do get confused over that. As may have been apparent in this thread, I had a bit of pet peeve re. people limping in Pixar movies with Disney ones, for example Blush

TheHamburgler · 08/01/2022 22:02

Had = have (I continue to be unduly enraged by such mix ups)!

Liathroid · 08/01/2022 22:03

@TheHamburgler I am guilty of this now! I more mean ‘animated movies on Disney plus’ they get lumped into ‘Disney’

TheHamburgler · 08/01/2022 22:15

To be fair, I think Pixar haven’t really lived up to their own high standards for a while. It used to be quite easy to tell a Pixar from a Disney just from watching them, but The Good Dinosaur, Onward and Luca (while all enjoyable, to different extents) lack the magic a little and are really quite generic.

BurntToastAgain · 08/01/2022 22:45

Me too. When Pedro steps into the river… I just about manage to recover and then the village turns up to help with repairs.

My sister said she sobbed through it several times too.

It's the music that gets me, Dos Oruguitas is such a powerful song and, although it loses a little in translation, the lyrics are well worth reading.
BurntToastAgain · 08/01/2022 22:54

Yes. We have the subtitles on usually. The music definitely helps.

My 18 month old picks up on the general mood of the scenes and wants a cuddle for the scary and sad bits. He loves the film and I’m pretty sure the idea of a plot escapes him. But the colours and music and general atmosphere creates an emotional tone that even he can read. 🤣

ilovebagpuss · 08/01/2022 23:17

We like the music but the story is just very odd. Why don’t her family give her a normal bedroom even if she isn’t “gifted”? What do they actually do for the town? Sod all except moving a few donkeys and bridges and a bit of cake healing.
What actually happened at the river ? I’ve watched it twice and still can’t work it out have I missed a bit when the candle comes out of the water ? Why did everyone turn on Bruno just because it rained on the sisters wedding? Jeez I’d be living in the walls if my family were that touchy! It’s just an insane story it makes no sense.
It’s lazy storytelling with a few tweaks it could have been an actual decent story as well as the good music.

ilovebagpuss · 08/01/2022 23:23

I also struggled with the massive glasses

BurntToastAgain · 08/01/2022 23:25

I think the glasses are to align her with her non-magical father, rather than her magical mother and siblings.

Emmelina · 08/01/2022 23:36

We enjoyed it and have watched a couple of times on Disney+. What sticks is the songs!

MaryAndHerNet · 08/01/2022 23:38

Why don’t her family give her a normal bedroom even if she isn’t “gifted”?
The Casita gives the rooms, not the family, besides, one of the themes of the movie is Alma forgetting the people are not just their gifts, to Alma, Mirabel barely existed as she had no gift.

What do they actually do for the town?
One makes flowers grow, one makes rain to grow crops, one helps to build houses, one entertains the children, one heals any injuries, Abuela Alma is like the mayor etc.

What actually happened at the river?
The two were fleeing their homes with their 3 children, joined by survivors. They were being pursued by the soldiers on horse back that had burned their village down. To give Alma and his children chance to escape, he turned to face down the soldiers, but they killed him. Alma felt such deep grief and sorrow that the candle she carried became the miracle, it exploded and forced the soldiers back, then grew high mountains around them to protect them.

I’ve watched it twice and still can’t work it out have I missed a bit when the candle comes out of the water?
The candle didn't come out of the water. Alma was carrying it.

Why did everyone turn on Bruno just because it rained on the sisters wedding?
They believed he was causing the I'll effects of his visions, when really he was just seeing the future. ("He told me my fish would die and the next day, dead..." Bruno was blamed as the cause, when really he just saw it happen.)

Jeez I’d be living in the walls if my family were that touchy!
Bruno living in the walls is actually a huge hint to the core of the story. The eldest male, patching the cracks of the family...

It’s just an insane story it makes no sense.
I understood it.

Here to help, the lunch pin of the movie, the song playing as Abuela Alma tells Mirabel what happened in the past.

Two oruguitas
Against the weather
The wind grows colder
But they're together
They hold each other
No way of knowing
They're all they have for shelter
And something inside them is growing
They long to stay together
But something inside them is growing

Ay, oruguitas
Don't you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It's your time to grow
To fall apart, to reunite
Wonders await you
Just on the other side
Trust they'll be there
And start to prepare
The way for tomorrow

Ay, oruguitas
Don't you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It's your time to grow
To fall apart, to reunite
Wonders await you
Just on the other side
Trust they'll be there
Start to prepare
The way for tomorrow

Two oruguitas
Cocooned and waiting
Each in their own world
Anticipating
What happens after
The rearranging?
And so afraid of change
In a world that never stops changing
So let the walls come down
The world will never stop changing
(Never stop changing)
(Never stop changing)
(Never stop changing)

Ay, mariposas
Don't you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It's your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
Don't look behind you
Fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow
Ay, mariposas
Don't you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It's your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
Don't look behind you
Fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow

@Username916

My girls are obsessed with it. I loved the characters and quite deep stories surrounding them (intergenerational traumas, the pressures of being the eldest etc) really brilliant film. It definitely grew on me though watching it a second time and I felt I understood it a lot more.
We really enjoyed it too.

The intergenerational trauma is a real thing for many immigrant families, it's really quite beautiful to see it on film for kids.

RainbowBriteUk · 09/01/2022 10:26

I am so desperate to see Encanto! I don't have children and can't borrow any. Would I be desperately weird to watch it alone at the cinema on a quiet weekday?
