Our family love it (but biased as South American’s!)

Opinions!?

I know a lot who have said they think the story is quite weak

Our guess was that she was already able to serve the community without a gift (seeing as they got them to help the town/create a better place) , she was so kind and special already that she didn’t need one?

Tayegete · 06/01/2022 17:17

I love a Disney film but struggled to get through this one. DS was not massively impressed either.

CaveMum · 06/01/2022 17:18

I enjoyed it, though think “Coco” is better.

My two (4 & 7) preferred Ron’s Gone Wrong - they run around the house singing the “Dikka, dikka, dikka” song 🤣

Liathroid · 06/01/2022 17:22

Found it very disappointing. No depth to the characters or their relationships. Songs could’ve been good but the singers were terrible - low voices and monotone, especially Luisa and Mirabel.

Thought from the trailer there would be some adventure to find the mysterious uncle who would help her - instead he was mentally disturbed and hiding in the house. Confused

Terrible relationship with her sister but a 5 min conversation and 2 min song and suddenly they were besties. It took running away ten mins from the house and a five min chat with her grandmother to fix everything else.

Compared to character development in Moana or relationship repair in Brave which took the whole movie. And the excellent sound tracks in those.

CatOfTheLand · 06/01/2022 17:24

We watch it about x3 a day💖✨🇨🇴

I wasn't that keen at first, but it's grown on me.

My DC will only eat 'Colombian' food now 🤣. I am very much not Colombian so if anyone has any recipes or tips would be much appreciated!

TruffleShuffles · 06/01/2022 17:25

I didn’t think it was great, I think now we have disney+ they think they need to put out new films with too short a gap to produce something really special. I thought Luca was quite weak too, Soul though was fantastic.

Helocariad · 06/01/2022 17:26

Our guess is that her gift is to see the cracks in the family dynamics that no-one else wants to see. She's a truth teller who helps people to discover what they really want. Because of talking to her Luisa realises she doesn't always want to be the strong one and Isabella doesn't want to have to be perfect.

Like a PP said, the grandma has narcissistic traits but it's Mirabel who helps her realise this and who brings about healing of the family.

A bit trite maybe but I liked it.

I agree though that she should have got her own room in the end.

Do you think that the rest of the family sort of knew that Bruno was still living there but were in denial?

BertieQueen · 06/01/2022 17:26

My 12 year old son who is very much past the Disney stage wanted to watch it over Christmas, he has watched it 4 times now! He says it’s one of his favourite films ever. He knows the words to every song. Grin

CatOfTheLand · 06/01/2022 17:30

Controversial opinion: their powers weren't that good. And everyone was a dick to Luisa, Bruno and Mirabel. Why did Luisa have to carry the donkeys when their owners were literally a metre away from the donkey parking?!

Mirabel should have been given a power at the end - or it made clear that she was the new guardian of candle/ future matriarch of the clan

Nosetickle · 06/01/2022 17:31

My DDs are obsessed with it! It’s been on every day since they watched it on NYE and the songs are so catchy they’re going around and around my head all the time. We especially love we don’t talk about Bruno! After a few days I made an effort to sit down with them and watch it properly all the way through and I still don’t quite understand the plot!

Nosetickle · 06/01/2022 17:36

What are those things they’re always eating that the mum who makes healing food cooks, they look yummy and I want to eat some!

TheHamburgler · 06/01/2022 17:40

But it wasn't designed to be one of the major Disney films so comparing it to titles like Moana and Frozen isn't particular fair. It holds up against other minor titles like Soul and Onward.
You’re muddling two different studios.

Momma, Frozen and Encanto are Disney Animation Studios.

Soul and Onward were both Pixar.

RainbowBridge21 · 06/01/2022 17:40

I love it. I watched it on Christmas Eve and still have the songs stuck in my head. I had no idea Stephanie Beatriz had such a great singing voice too.

Jacarandamanda · 06/01/2022 17:46

@Nosetickle

They are Arepas! I think she even says at one point they are arepas con queso

They are really good, the closest thing I can compare it to is a bit like a potato cake

My favourite Colombian food is chocolate santafareño - hot chocolate with cheese in it! Sounds weird but it’s amazing

I can't get past the fact that the girl looks like a middle aged woman.

Lea1437 · 06/01/2022 17:57

I was just singing the family Madrigal as I scrolled and saw your post!
YANBU Grin

Nosetickle · 06/01/2022 17:58

Thank you @Jacarandamanda I’m going to look up how to make those! The hot chocolate with cheese sounds…. Interesting!

DontKnowWhatToThink7 · 06/01/2022 18:05

My DD loves it. She is Autistic and rarely watches films but she sat through and watched the whole thing which is a big deal in our house. The only other film she has watched and enjoyed that much is Moana

persephone19 · 06/01/2022 18:11

@Stiffcondomhat

I can't get past the fact that the girl looks like a middle aged woman.
How so? I thought she was adorable
roundtable · 06/01/2022 18:18

My interpretation of Mirabel and the room situation was that she didn't need a room as she was connected to the whole house. It only seemed to directly interact with her. She talked to it and it responded.

At the end when she put the key in the door the front door glowed like one of the rooms which I think showed that too. But that's my interpretation, you may not agree!

There definitely where some flaws like the sister who could hear Bruno not telling on him hiding in the house but on the whole I really enjoyed it.

Mylittlecoconuts · 06/01/2022 18:24

It was ok at best. I love Coco and being Spanish, love listening to the mix between the two languages in Coco so was excited to watch Encanto but did leave the cinema feel a bit 'meh' about it.

I wouldn't rush to watch it again and my kids haven't watched it again either. Coco is still much better!

TyrannosaurusRegina · 06/01/2022 18:36

@Happylittlethoughts

My 22 and 18 Yr old were shocked to discover Mumsnet's disparaging remarks on Encanto. They are rating it very highly - in their top 5 Disney films 😁
What were the disparaging remarks, I missed these.
DeadButDelicious · 06/01/2022 18:48

We went to see It at the pictures and loved it. Watched it several times since it's been on Disney+ as well. DD really likes the pressure song and we don't talk about Bruno. The animation is astounding. So lush.

maddiemookins16mum · 06/01/2022 18:48

It was ok. Coco is far superior.

TwittleBee · 06/01/2022 18:50

We looooved it!
