Our family love it (but biased as South American’s!)

Opinions!?

I know a lot who have said they think the story is quite weak

OP posts:
Shouldbedoing · 06/01/2022 18:50

My 11 and 15 year do are singing the songs constantly- especially Bruno

TheHamburgler · 06/01/2022 19:05

It was ok. Coco is far superior.
Slightly different target markets though. Pixar movies are generally aimed at a wider audience, whereas Disneys are more specifically aimed at children (obviously not to say they can’t be enjoyed by everyone, but it does make for a different tone).

SpacePotato · 06/01/2022 19:08

My interpretation of Mirabel and the room situation was that she didn't need a room as she was connected to the whole house. It only seemed to directly interact with her. She talked to it and it responded

I agree. She was the only one who treated the house like a person in it's own right.
Her being centre of the pic on the new front door shows how she is set to take over her nan's role.

My DD noticed that when young mirabel touches the candle, she then wipes her hands on her dress before touching the door handle. She thinks she wiped the magic off her hands. It would be odd to animate that specifically if it had no relevance.

Yes, why the hell doesn't Dolores tell everyone Bruno is still there!

Why doesn't Isabella grow crops or something useful!

Why does Luisa have to do the whole town's shitwork?

Why doesn't anyone ever leave the village?

Why didn't the bad men kill anyone else when they were all right there! They had time.

Songs are great but Coco is much better. Just hearing remember me makes me cry.

Sparticle · 06/01/2022 20:16

I see what you’re both saying about her gift being to heal the family but in my mind she is treated so dreadfully for however many years, looked down upon by her family and probably the village - and when I saw her youngest brother’s amazing rainforest room I just thought it was dreadful that she has been shut in the nursery all that time. So her gift is a bit rubbish really in comparison!

roundtable · 06/01/2022 21:27

I don't know, if my house put things away and placed things out for me; lifted me all around the place so I didn't need to walk and did what I asked it to - I'd be pretty happy Grin

NellePorter · 06/01/2022 21:30

We were disappointed! Thought the storyline was weak ... maybe we need to watch it again.

WorstXmasEver · 06/01/2022 21:33

Very bland & forgettable. I doubt my children will ever want to watch it again.

Porfre · 06/01/2022 21:36

Finished the movie and loved it.
Kids seen it loads of time. Their favourite movie at present.

And the songs are great too- they've really grown on me.

PurpleRainlnTheSky · 06/01/2022 21:44

Never heard of it.

Porfre · 06/01/2022 21:48

You need to watch it at least 3 times a day on repeat like I've had to do the last week or so.
WeNeedToTalkAboutBruno · 06/01/2022 21:53

Another one here for wanting to watch it again when the children have gone to bed. Love the songs.

CasperGutman · 06/01/2022 21:55

Glad I saw it in the cinema because I'm not sure if have 'got' it if I hadn't focused on it. As it was, we really liked it here (DS9+DD6). Not quite as good as Coco, which we LOVED - and which always makes me cry at the end!

ShortColdandGrey · 06/01/2022 22:01

My DD 5 loves it. She goes about singing "We don't talk about Bruno" constantly. She went to see it at the cinema with her class at Christmas. I think that has made it feel a bit special to her.

Hotcuppatea · 06/01/2022 22:03

It's all right. Not brilliant. Wouldn't watch it again.

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 06/01/2022 22:08

@DontKnowWhatToThink7

My DD loves it. She is Autistic and rarely watches films but she sat through and watched the whole thing which is a big deal in our house. The only other film she has watched and enjoyed that much is Moana
Interestingly we've had the same experience here. My autistic 5 year old has never sat with such rapt attention through a whole film before, and she certainly hasn't wanted to watch anything that long all the way through as many times.
BurntToastAgain · 06/01/2022 22:12

My toddler adores encanto. Absolutely adores it.

Bimblybomeyelash · 06/01/2022 22:15

I love Moana so much, and I’ve never been a Disney fan, so now I compare all Disney films to Moana. And none of them are as good!

elp30 · 06/01/2022 22:29

@Jacarandamanda

I don't have young children around my house anymore so this film has passed me by completely. However, I looked up a preview and it looks interesting.

I'm a Mexican-American so movies with Spanish language and characters that are representative of me and my Hispanic culture ("Coco" especially, was about someone like me and I too, have a father who was a mariachi for sixty years!!) are a joy to me! It's wonderful to see and hear Latino voices in films and elsewhere.

Thank you for mentioning it as I will be seeing it this weekend.

Phrowzunn · 06/01/2022 22:35

We love it! 2 and 4 year old DDs, we’ve had the soundtrack on repeat since we saw it in the cinema. My 2yo asks repeatedly for ‘the pressure song’ and dances around very dramatically.
I disagree with those saying the storyline is ‘weak’, I think it is so much more relevant than lots of others, pretty much everyone can relate on some level to the family dynamics that they explore in the film. The pressures and expectations that can be put on us by having a certain ‘role’ within our family, sibling rivalries and comparisons, not understanding things from someone else’s perspective, trauma being unwittingly passed down generations. I think there are so many interesting issues that are explored in this film that can start conversations within families and make us all think. I’m surprised that most on mumsnet don’t seem to recognise that one of the themes is the whole golden child / scapegoat dynamic that is so often discussed here!
I like that Mirabel doesn’t have a ‘gift’ but is the one that ends up saving the magic. When the house starts to fall and they are trying to save the candle, everyone else fails because they rely on their magic and it lets them down. Mirabel is the only one who reaches the candle using her grit and quick thinking because she hasn’t ever relied on a gift. I think that’s a lovely lesson for kids who maybe feel they don’t have a particular strength or talent, especially compared to their siblings or friends.
And those saying the music is no good have not heard it enough! We don’t talk about Bruno is an absolute work of art! Surface Pressure is really so deep and relatable if you listen properly to the lyrics. And Dos Oroguidas is just stunning.

MizzFizz · 06/01/2022 22:36

I loooved it! Watched it a few days ago and cried like a baby (pregnancy hormones?). It's so relatable... Breaking those intergenerational cycles 😭😭😭. I would definitely watch it again.

Comtesse · 06/01/2022 23:20

Pixar and Disney are essentially the same organism now. Disney is the brand for “princess” like films and Pixar covers everything else. The Pixar crew were so brilliant it was basically a reverse take over of Disney (on the movie side at least). I don’t think Encanto is a 5* film but we all liked it at the cinema and some of those songs are sticky!

MrPoppysParka · 06/01/2022 23:50

We LOVE it here. My DD was also so happy to see a character with her skin tone and curly hair (Dolores). First time ever in a Disney film for her.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 07/01/2022 00:50

Watched it with Dd17 this week. We both loved it!!! We are both BIG Lin Manuel Miranda fans, and musical theatre fans.

It was so charming, just loved it 💕

steff13 · 07/01/2022 01:03

I love Bruno

TheWitchersWife · 07/01/2022 06:41

Question:

If Julieta's meals can heal all, including Mirabel when her hand gets cut, why does Mirabel need glasses?
Are they simply a fashion choice?

I read Mirabel is only the 4th Disney character to have glasses and the first ever female character. I like that they meet branching out in terms of diversity but the plot hole!

Still love the film though.
