Our family love it (but biased as South American’s!)

Opinions!?

I know a lot who have said they think the story is quite weak

We love it! Watched it a few times over the holidays, but we are massive Lin Manuel Miranda fans in this house. His story telling through lyrics is amazing. I think this is actually a Disney film that is better if you're older. Like 13 and 44 which me and dd are 😆😆

cakegoblin · 06/01/2022 06:59

Absolutely love it in this house, kids back to school today and I am considering watching it again in my own! Had the songs on constantly. Best one ever IMO

ForcingSmiles · 06/01/2022 07:02

@Iamnotthe1

The songs were good but the overall story was a bit weak considering what it could have been. In places, it felt a bit forced and I think they could have done more with it. But it wasn't designed to be one of the major Disney films so comparing it to titles like Moana and Frozen isn't particular fair. It holds up against other minor titles like Soul and Onward.
The music was done by the same person who wrote Moana so I think that's why people are comparing them so much. Don't get me wrong I love Lin Manuel Miranda and i'm a big fan of his work (and I know he didn't write the story) but Moana is infinitely better.

Encanto is just...a bit meh. Watched it once, probably wouldn't watch it again

UnionistMum · 06/01/2022 07:03

My daughter loves it. I love it.
This has helped us doing Covid isolation in Portugal.

The dos uruguitas song is beautiful and and always makes me cry.
Also love Isabella’s song as well as Colombia , mi encanto.
It’s a nice movie and Bruno’s song is fab too.
Bruno is such a caracter with his superstitious rituals like knocking on wood, throwing Salt and sugar.

We don’t talk about Bruno, no, no, no.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 06/01/2022 07:09

I thought it was arse.

MaryShelley1818 · 06/01/2022 07:12

We absolutely loved it here ❤
Music and storyline were brilliant xx

RobinPenguins · 06/01/2022 07:12

Dd has watched it about 40 times over the Christmas holidays and still wanted to see it at the cinema. And it wasn’t unbearable for me despite multiple previous viewings.

“We don’t talk about Bruno” has been my ear worm for 2 weeks though.

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 06/01/2022 07:13

Massive hit in our house - my five year old loves it! I think it's a really lovely film and the music is excellent. I prefer it to Moana tbh.

switswoo81 · 06/01/2022 07:15

It has been the soundtrack to the Christmas holidays in my house. Great film.

PyjamaMamma · 06/01/2022 07:29

Our household loved it too but we also have a South American bias Grin - Mirabel looks like me when I was younger too, so much so that DH put her photo as my avatar on Disney+ before we even watched the film, so maybe I’m double biased. But I am obsessed, I want her skirt and Disney store is selling capybaras and I need a toy capybara 🤣

Terminallysleepdeprived · 06/01/2022 07:37

Dd is 8 and liked it. She can't have loved it though as it has only been on once unlike other films that have pretty much been on repeat. I can't say I was that impressed.

The story was very weak, the songs weren't all that good either.

Not one of Disneys better films

crazyjinglist · 06/01/2022 07:40

I'd never heard of it but we watched it the other day after dd(16) had seen it at a friend's house and loved it. She wanted to watch it in Spanish, so we did (with subtitles) - I speak decent Spanish and both dc are studying it.

I quite liked the music and enjoyed the opportunity to practise my Spanish but I thought it was quite weak for a Disney film.

GougeAway · 06/01/2022 07:54

My kids 14 and 11 loved it but not obsessively. I don’t like musicals so found it boring. The animation was beautiful though. The dysfunctional family story was quite disturbing and I found it uncomfortable viewing.

makingmiracles · 06/01/2022 08:00

All I hear everyday at the moment is shouts of “we don’t talk about Bruno” 😂

Vallmo47 · 06/01/2022 08:00

We LOVE it.

I NEED to know about Bruno… yes yes yes.

Great tip about subtitles.

Mummadeze · 06/01/2022 08:09

I enjoyed it, but probably as a one off. I prefer traditional story Disney movies with animals in! Tangled is the most recent one I really loved. I wasn’t even a massive fan of Frozen to be honest. I love the really old ones still like Cinderella, Robin Hood and 101 Dalmations.

WakeUpLockie · 06/01/2022 08:10

Cannot stop singing We Don't Talk About Bruno

(No clouds allowed in the skyyyy!)

dos oruguitas is a straightforward rip-off of little mermaid's 'under the sea', no? agree that the Bruno song is v strong, though.
rocketmanshine · 06/01/2022 09:56

We are equally obsessed here! Encanto songs on repeat on Spotify and it's been watched endlessly over the holidays.
The songs are so good!
We don't talk about Bruno being our favourite. Dd 8 and Dd5 love it!

Anxietyhell21 · 06/01/2022 09:57

We don't talk about Bruno no no no

Love it 😀 took our Brownies group to see it at the cinema. I've watched it another 3 times since. My LG is eyeing up the toys / dolls on the disney store website!

Helocariad · 06/01/2022 10:09

@roundtable

We loved it too. I don't agree about the storyline being weak. I thought it was quite deep for Disney. Not so many stories for children about intergenerational trauma. Explaining certain bits to my DC led to some quite thought provoking conversations.
^This.

A really good film about family dynamics and changing family constellations. Also about self worth: the difference between feeling worthy only as long as you bring something exceptional vs feeling worthy because of yourself. Conditional vs unconditional love.

Apparently the film is being used by therapists who work with refugees.

Username916 · 06/01/2022 10:13

My girls are obsessed with it. I loved the characters and quite deep stories surrounding them (intergenerational traumas, the pressures of being the eldest etc) really brilliant film. It definitely grew on me though watching it a second time and I felt I understood it a lot more.

3scape · 06/01/2022 10:20

It's not great. They don't really go into WHY Mirabelle is so great (surely we need to see her support for her family more than one handhold and some jazzy flower explosion). They don't express adequately the handing of the torch (candle) from one matriarch to another.

But just as lack lustre as every other Disney. It doesn't stand out to me.

Tobchette · 06/01/2022 16:44

We are watching it for the god knows how many times now and every time I find things I love and hate.

Love: the songs
The animation - very detailed and some very realistic facial expressions, especially during the pressure song
The colors
The general idea of a magic/family house
Think Pepas dh is my fave character

Hate:
Some aspects of the storyline. Toxic family, narcissistic gran scapegoating her son and grandchild and then golden child Isabella. But in the end Mirabel has to forgive and hug because well they're family. Probably goes over most kids heads and those who do understand receive totally the wrong message that it's okay to be downtrodden by your own relatives.
Plus so many plot holes, they got all this magic but Bruno was just able to hide in the walls, the cousin heard him but didn't say anything, yet she couldn't keep her mouth shut about anything else. Then the idea that Mirabel was the gift all along. Well why was there a need for all the drama in the first place? Seems like the movie should have been longer but they just cut bits out and some of the story is missing.
Arranged marriage for Isabella but then he ends up with the cousin just like sloppy seconds.
Mirabel could have at least got her own bedroom. She just gonna live in the nursery forever?

Sparticle · 06/01/2022 17:05

We watched it on Boxing Day and really enjoyed it. Definitely heard echoes of Hamilton and Moana in the music but I think the soundtrack is great!

The only thing we didn't understand (and perhaps need a second viewing to work it out), was why Mirabel didn't get a gift in the first place. It seemed really cruel. DD and I tried to think that perhaps her gift was hidden until the moment at the end but we didn't think that made any sense. Can anyone please explain?
