Nobody’s child

Little Mistress

Never fully dressed.

Im sure there are more.

I just don’t get it. It’s cringe and depressed.

Also, ‘never fully dressed’ now do children’s clothing too. I just could not buy my child clothing from a company with that name. I don’t know if I’m reading it wrong, I don’t think I am, it just seems to have some kind of suggestive implication.

I was really tempted by Missguided's maternity line when I was pregnant with ds3 but I couldn't quite bring myself to walk around with 'missguided' written across my bump (although I probably was!).

InPraiseOfBacchus · 05/01/2022 11:01

"Little Mistress" is a more formal and antiquated term of endearment for a girl. Like "young Master Smith" for a boy.

"Dirty" fries refers to them being unceremoniously covered in sauce. I.e. not neatly presented, as they originated as street food.

You'd have to be pretty repressed to find any of the original examples even slightly suggestive.

MelonTits · 05/01/2022 11:04

There’s a few brands mentioned here I wasn’t aware of whose clothes look great - thanks, pearl-clutchers!

scooterbear · 05/01/2022 11:05

Well don't Order anything from never fully dressed then op- the packaging has a drawing of some boobies on it. Or it did last time I ordered from them.
I can't get too bothered about it really. Though I don't particularly like pretty little thing as a name/concept for a brand given how it targets teens as it's main audience

GrannytoaUnicorn · 05/01/2022 11:10

@FruitMelange

And Pretty Little Thing- I thought it meant the garment. As in it sells pretty little things, like purses and the like Me too. I'm surprised anyone could make any other inference.
Because men used to use the term "She's a pretty little thing...." back when you could say things like that without everyone being offended
GrannytoaUnicorn · 05/01/2022 11:12

I always dislike 'Not your daughter' I mean, wtf?! Hmm

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/01/2022 11:13

OP, please don’t ever look at the Oddballs website…

daisyjgrey · 05/01/2022 11:14

Do you think men think about all of this?

daisyjgrey · 05/01/2022 11:14

Oh ignore me, phone glitch, wrong post! As you were 😬

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 05/01/2022 11:16

I'm in my 50s and I've seen Annie once, probably over 35 years ago. It was rubbish and I don''t remember that song at all. As others have already pointed out, some Bowie lyrics are pretty filthy, I remember being in the car with my mum as a teenager and being mortifed by the
'falls wanking to the floor' lyric. And 'Wham Bam thank you ma'am!'

Provocative shop names aren't new either. Remember Malcom McLaren and Vivienne Westwood's shop in the King's Road at the start of punk? For those that are too young it was called Sex. and sold a lot of bondage gear, and was pretty popular Grin.

It's "not your daughter's" i.e. clothes made for adult women's shapes, not teens.

I'm sure someone else has said it but Fat Face refers to the large side of a mountain, not a person's face.

snackodactyl · 05/01/2022 12:02

@CharlotteGoldenblattYork

I always think Fat Face is a terrible name!
Agreed! It’s a shame as I like their clothes too Blush

Annie the film is shit.

The book is amazing, but the film is crap.

Latinorapida · 05/01/2022 12:31

@crazyjinglist

YABU. I would be against brand names with really offensive words in them, and I hate clothes with misogynist or offensive slogans on them, but I don't think the examples you picked are a problem at all (especially since you seem to have misunderstood the meaning behind two of them!). I can't understand why you're objecting to Nobody's Child (even without the underlying meaning).

You must either be really sensitive or have a filthy mind, OP!

… must be the latter Blush

Don't Google the rest of the lyrics if you're of a delicate disposition.
I didn't know the song from Annie either.

watchingrnfire · 05/01/2022 18:18

Yeah there's one with the word slut in it. I just don't understand

Frankola · 05/01/2022 20:15

I know NFD has been explained but Nobodys Child got it's name from it's original target audience, who were young adults who didn't like to be called child/children.

They are actually a hugely ethical, concious brand if you read about them.

Perhaps they should have changed the name for a kids line. But that would mean alienating an audience that have grown up with them and likely want to now buy clothes for their own kids. So it makes no business sense.
